Publisher's Review
In search of the lost sense of instrumentalized existence
I have a sensitive nose and ears, quick legs, high concentration and cool-headedness.
And it also has the ability to keep promised rules and carry out orders.
Unlike other animals, they are not afraid of the sound of gunshots.
However, when a sound is heard, the body moves immediately.
To retrieve prey, the whole body and mind are focused on one another without being swayed by other stimuli.
It is the result of countless hours of training and effort.
But one day, I came across a deer running even though I wasn't hunting.
I could hear the crunching sound of fallen leaves and the sound of the accumulated snow being pressed down.
The useless noise and aimless progress felt unfamiliar.
If I keep hearing these sounds, will they become as familiar as the sound of gunfire? No, I'm sure I already knew them, and I felt them. When did I forget them? Like that deer, will I be able to run without a place to go and listen to unnecessary sounds?
To the stimulating information that numbs the senses
We are accustomed to tying ourselves down
“There’s a way to do this,” “This is how you should live,” “You’re doing well.” These kinds of stories are flooding in every day from YouTube, Instagram, TV, books, and other media.
We automatically tune in to the bits and pieces of information that tell us what to do immediately to be happy and joyful, or to act efficiently and rationally.
Like other animals that run away at the sound of 'bang', we may have initially realized how dangerous those words were.
But as we become accustomed to it through repetition, we gradually forget that it is the sound that can make life meaningless.
And then they act on that information and post that image on their channel again, hoping to receive people's recognition and praise.
Once you complete one process, your mission is accomplished.
So you instrumentalize yourself to accomplish one mission.
As a result, we do not hear other sounds that are not necessary to obtain the result.
Because it's useless.
However, if we are filled with sensory words like freshness, coolness, and tranquility, rather than objective words like happiness, rationality, comfort, and pleasure, then the 'we' who feel them can become the subject of life.
Ultimately, it is not fragmented information transmitted through stimuli, but connected experiences that we see and hear ourselves that keep us alive.
To be alive is to be able to feel, and that in itself is 'life'.
To wake up the paralyzed world
One word shout, bang!
"Tang!" is author Park Su-jeong's first picture book.
The artist reveals to us the countless hidden sensations of the changing seasons and familiar landscapes through brushstrokes and colors that spread like water droplets and then explode with intensity like fireworks.
And the moment we realize that the image of a hunting dog running across the earth and heading towards nature is 'me', we realize that our freedom is always breathing within us, like that great nature.
And by the time you turn the last page, you realize that this book is another 'bang!' from the author, making you hear what you couldn't hear before and see what you couldn't see before.
