Publisher's Review
The history of Goryeo recorded in official history, 『History of Goryeo』 and 『Abridged History of Goryeo』
Reclaim your vitality at Park Si-baek's fingertips!
- 500 years of Goryeo history brought back to life through the hands of a master craftsman named Park Si-baek, from storyboard to animation.

The Goryeo Dynasty is a history that we have been familiar with on the surface, but when we look closely, we have never really known about it.
From the name "Korea" derived from "Goryeo" to the cultural achievements represented by the Tripitaka Koreana and Goryeo celadon, and even the historical drama "Taejo Wang Geon" that aired in the early 2000s and is still used as an internet meme to this day, there are things that easily come to mind for any Korean when they think of "Goryeo."
However, very few people know the specific details of the historical flow of the Goryeo Dynasty's rise and fall and the political upheaval that unfolded within it.
Historical records of Goryeo history are extremely scant, having been naturally and intentionally erased over the course of at least 630 years, and most of Goryeo's relics and historical sites are located in present-day North Korea and are therefore difficult to access.
Because in-depth academic research and the production of written works are difficult, there has been a dearth of reliable, accessible, and enjoyable content about the Goryeo Dynasty.

Accordingly, Park Si-baek set out to restore the Goryeo Dynasty using the method he had always done and was best at, that is, using official historical materials as a basis.
Park Si-baek focused on the 『History of Goryeo』 and 『Compendium of Goryeo History』, which are considered one of the four major official histories of the Republic of Korea along with the 『Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』 and the 『Samguk Sagi』.
『History of Goryeo』 is a history book of the Goryeo Dynasty compiled by Kim Jong-seo, Jeong In-ji, and others upon the decree of King Sejong of Joseon. It is the oldest historical document of Goryeo that has survived to the present day. It includes not only historical books of the time but also various original historical documents such as anthologies and epitaphs, and is composed of a massive content of 139 volumes and 75 books, including 46 volumes of genealogy, 39 volumes of history, 2 volumes of chronology, 50 volumes of biographies, and 2 volumes of lists.
The compiler did not create sentences but copied and pasted the original text, and the book is evaluated as a history book that maintains strict historical accuracy and objectivity by including both praise and criticism of each individual in its evaluation of characters.
『Goryeosa』 is the most abundant basic document on the Goryeo Dynasty and an official history that records the history of Goryeo. Its academic and cultural value has been recognized, and in 2021, the Cultural Heritage Administration designated it as a national treasure. 『Goryeosa Cheoryo』 is also recognized as a valuable historical material that supplements the insufficient contents of 『Goryeosa』, rather than simply being a summary of 『Goryeosa』.

Park Si-baek looked through every line of the records in the 『History of Goryeo』 and 『Abridged History of Goryeo』, dug up facts that were on the verge of being lost to the back alleys of history, and filled his own historical notebooks with them.
The collected materials are skillfully woven into a story by adjusting the intensity of the spotlight according to the recognized historical context.
Fragments of history that had existed only as single lines of records in dusty historical materials are now supplemented with appropriate metaphors and easily understandable sentences, and are overlaid with meticulously detailed drawings that depict everything from the features of the characters to their wrinkled faces and flowing hair.
Here, the psychological descriptions of characters, taking advantage of the genre of comics, are vividly presented.
The 『History of Goryeo』, which was reborn through the meticulous care of the craftsman Park Si-baek throughout the entire process, casts off the shadow of hundreds of years and regains its overflowing vitality, fully reproducing the dynamism and independence of 500 years of Goryeo history before our eyes, thereby eliciting both emotion and thrill in readers.

Frustrated Reforms Call for a New World
A revolutionary force rises amid the collapse of royal authority and popular sentiment!
- 『Park Si-baek's History of Goryeo』 5 The Failure of Reform and the Road to National Ruin

Following volumes 1-4, which cover the beginning and golden age of Goryeo, the military regime, and the period of Yuan intervention, volume 5 of 『Park Si-baek's History of Goryeo』 covers the final period of Goryeo, from King Chungsuk to King Gongyang, as the country faced chaos and headed towards ruin.
During this period, the king's dethronement and restoration were repeated due to Yuan's interference, and the royal authority was shaken.
Meanwhile, as the Red Turban Rebels rose and threatened the power of the Yuan Dynasty, King Gongmin pursued reforms under the banner of independence from the Yuan Dynasty.
However, the reforms are frustrated by successive coups and uprisings, and the tyranny of the powerful families is added to the ruthless misconduct of the kings, causing the people's hearts to crumble...
The Goryeo Dynasty faces its greatest crisis since its founding, but heroes emerge in times of hardship.
The undefeated general Choi Young rises as a hero, seizes power, and gathers the scattered hearts of the people, but the fallen royal authority can no longer find its rightful place.
Jeong Mong-ju, the 'last Goryeo person', tries to protect the dynasty, but he is not enough to stop the forces that dream of a new world, such as Jeong Do-jeon and Yi Seong-gye.

The 40 years from King Chungsuk to King Chungjeong were the period in Goryeo history when independence was most vulnerable.
King Gongmin attempted to reestablish Goryeo by regaining considerable autonomy through his anti-Yuan policy and reforming internal affairs, but his dream of rebuilding Goryeo was shattered.
The vested interest system centered on those in power was further strengthened, and threats from outside continued unabated.
The natural state of the country and the lives of its people were in ruins, but in this soil, the seeds of a revolution to found the Joseon Dynasty sprouted, grew, and bore fruit.
