To my distant name
Description
Book Introduction
How did you come to the human world?
A journey to find a name and its origins
A story about the little wolves around us
The novel “To My Distant Name” (First Encounter with Novels 36) by Gil Sang-hyo, the author who won the Korean Science Literature Award and the Biryongso Literature Award and was loved by readers for the children’s book “Inside the Pencil Case in the Deep Night,” has been published.
This is a fantastic story about an individual, 'I', who was rescued from a breeding farm and sets out to find his name and origins, wondering, "How did we end up in the human world?" (p.28).
The longing of 'I' to know the meaning of existence resonates with the concerns of young readers about self and identity, and at the same time, it is a work that evokes affection and gratitude toward all dogs that love and stay by 'my human's side.
Illustrator Shin Eun-jung uses her exceptional skills to create a vast landscape of nature where ancient wolves live and breathe.
The picture, which vividly conveys the sensation of cold air hitting one's face, adds to the sense of immersion.
This is a novel I would like to recommend to those who understand the heart that takes steps without any calculation toward someone they love and long for.

Into the book
Now I know even if humans don't call me.
A human being knows just by picking up the string.
It means let's go out.
I run like a slider and wait for the human to put a line on me.
Even in that short time, he couldn't stay still and was stamping his feet impatiently.
Even though it is a comfortable space that no longer makes me tremble, I always wait for the time to leave this place.
---p.10
“Look at those guys.
"Don't your teeth chatter? How can everyone endure it so well?"
He said, pointing to a group of his own kind playing together.
“Well, that would be understandable if you weren’t curious about how you ended up in the human world.
You know what? He might even live knowing himself as a human being.”
How did we come to be in the human world?
That was my long-standing question.
"You mean you know? How we came to be in the human world?"
---p.24~25
When I returned home, a part of me was always washed away with the smell of my own people.
I, now half-human, dug into the embrace of humanity.
I love my human.
A human being who doesn't bark at me fiercely, starve me, or kick me.
The person who washes me and feeds me, who holds me close and rubs his face against me until I can't breathe, who sleeps with me at night and makes me want to cry if he doesn't come back until the sun goes down.
But the more I loved him, the more one question arose in my mind.
I wonder how we came to be in the human world.
---p.27~28
Night came like darkness.
The stars shining brightly in the night sky were so mysterious that they made my heart flutter whenever I saw them.
What reassured me more than the presence of my kind, which I could sense with my clear vision and even more powerful sense of smell, was this boundless space that embraced me and threatened me at the same time, the land that always kept my nerves on edge and made me live each day with tenacity.

Did I tell the truth in the chorus I just finished?
Haven't I lied, shouting that this is my place, that I am a noble being here?
Suddenly, a certain energy flowed through my whole body.
It felt like emotion.
I held onto the emotions that would sometimes come to me without reason, instead of letting them go.
And I looked at it quietly.
It felt lonely, and so uncomfortable.
Why do I feel lonely in this tight-knit crowd?
---p.62
And finally, a white-haired man accepted the new man.
The commotion of the big people suddenly died down.
You could tell at a glance that he was the alpha of the humans.
Alpha muttered softly and lifted the pup high.
Then the humans looked up at the night sky and muttered together.
They were undoubtedly blessing new life.
At that moment, my heart pounded violently.
They are no different from us.
---p.73
I, why did we come to the human world?
I came here to find the answer.
Until I get the answer, I will never return beyond the pit, to the human world.

Publisher's Review
“Forget the line.
Forget it.
“It goes where the line can’t follow.”
'I', a dog rescued from the breeding farm, eats his fill for the first time and sleeps deeply.
I love the person who hugs me so tightly that I can't breathe and rubs his face against mine, the person who makes me want to cry if he doesn't come back until the sun sets.
And yet, I constantly long to step outside this comfortable space, beyond the walls that confine me.
But my time and the space I can stay in always depend on humans.
As I watch my fellow creatures being led by humans with resignation, regardless of their own will, a question that has been on my mind for a long time arises.
How did we come to be in the human world?
Then one day, while I was walking with a human tied to a rope, I met a fellow creature who seemed to know something.
My kind warns me that they might regret telling them where we came from and how we came to be in the human world, but I do not back down.
One cool night, I throw myself into a pit of light with the help of my kind and my life as an ancient wolf unfolds, fighting for survival with the pack.
“I told you not to be conscious of the line.
Humans too.
Focus entirely on yourself.
Jump in.
like this."
The compatriots lightly threw themselves into the pit where light was rising.
I was completely frozen in place by the unbelievable sight.
“Come with me quickly!”
The voices of his compatriots faded away from the pit.
"Focus entirely on myself? Don't be conscious of the line?" (p.31)
“They are no different from us.”
An uncontrollable heart rushing towards humanity
My group, enduring the harsh cold and hunger, finally succeeds in hunting after a long time and barely fills their hungry stomachs.
Having lost my memories before jumping into the pit, I naturally blend into my life as an ancient wolf.
The age of abundance has long since faded, and the large prey that our ancestors hunted has become harder to find, putting the wolf pack in danger.
The longer I starve, the more curious I become.
A group of humans who hunt using their excellent forelimbs and long, sharp objects.
The female, who noticed me, unable to overcome my curiosity, looking at the human dwelling from afar, wrapped her two forelegs around the young one and looked at me quietly.
Contrary to expectations, there was neither hostility nor warning in the eyes of the pregnant female.
The more I look into those eyes, the more I feel a strange sense of relief.
Watching the mother and baby waving their front legs gives me a strange feeling.
The baby, which had stopped crying, was peacefully held in the female's arms.
The female turned the young one's face towards me and extended one of its front toes.
It seemed to be pointing in my direction.
But the little one couldn't find me in the darkness and just wandered around.
Then the female grabbed one of the young one's front paws and shook it towards me.
What did it mean?
(p.49)
My sister, who is also the alpha leading the pack, warns, “Keep in mind that your curiosity can put us in danger.” (p.52), but as I see the humans overcome with emotion as they celebrate the birth of a new life, I realize:
“Those who are thrilled and humbled by new life are no different from us” (p.73).
From that day on, my desire to see the new human and its mother grew uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, the Alpha couple declare that they will leave this land, where finding large prey has become difficult, and lead the pack to a new place.
Finally, as I try to see the human herd from a distance, I find them wandering around with their prey nearby due to their poor sense of smell and hearing.
They didn't have it, but I decided to use what I had...
To the little wolves around us
With gratitude and apologies
The dogs in "To My Distant Name" speak.
“What can we do in the human world?” (p.14) “Because this is the human world.” (p.19).
In the past, when I could freely run through nature, I had to tenaciously spend each day on edge, but at least I had the pride of living fiercely according to my own will.
But in today's human world, dogs are kept on leashes and constantly blocked by human rules.
Some vicious people treat dogs rudely and threaten them.
I was terrified for a while.
I'm afraid I'll have another baby.
I'm afraid that I'll have to give birth again, with my belly swollen to the point of dragging on the floor and then falling down.
For fear that the babies who suckle the milk without even coming out will be taken away by humans again.
I'm afraid that one night I'll cry with my heart torn to shreds and be kicked by a human.
(p.12)
I tried to step back towards the space beyond the transparent wall, but it was no use.
This time, my human didn't seem to have any intention of listening to me.
“It’s not something that can be solved by holding on.”
There, one of my kind came out with my human and said:
“Don’t you get it? It’s not you who won’t let you in, it’s that person.”
The gaze of his fellow tribesmen turned towards the human standing in front of the wall.
He was glaring at me fiercely.
Those eyes reminded me of that person from before.
The man in front of the wall froze me with just his gaze, without starving me or kicking me.
(p.16~17)
Leaving behind the human world where one must constantly suppress one's will and nature, the adventure that 'I' embarks on makes the reader look back on the long relationship between dogs and humans.
It reminds us of the first time we joined forces and shared our hearts, confirming our deep bond.
Above all, it is a story that awakens a sense of longing and gratitude for the little wolves around us who take steps without any calculation and who cannot hide their love for humans.
Forget it.
