The grumpy Jaeseok has grown up
Description
Book Introduction
According to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family's "2023 Youth Statistics," studying is the top concern among youth ages 13-18 (50.8%).
More than half of teenagers struggle with anxiety about the future and the disconnect between what they love and reality.

The "Grumpy Jaeseok" series, which is enjoying explosive popularity among teenagers, has returned with the ninth story, "Grumpy Jaeseok Has Grow Up" (Apple Books).
The "Grumpy Jaeseok" series, which keenly senses the concerns of teenagers of this era and selects topics, and monopolizes the love of students, parents, and teachers through thorough preliminary research and vivid, realistic descriptions, is creating an even bigger craze with each installment because the main character Jaeseok, who has a bubbly charm, directly represents the voice of teenagers.
This time, it tells the story of Jae-seok and his friends, who realize that they need to improve their grades to take one step closer to their dreams, and who are concerned about how to study.

Into the book
“When I see friends around me whose grades are improving, I see that they are equipped with perseverance.”
Bodam said calmly.
“It has the power to dig in and focus.
But my older brother Ki-myung has a serious lack of concentration.
“If you want to do something, you have to be able to concentrate without moving for about an hour.”
"that's right.
“Even broadcast programs only last for twenty or thirty minutes, but interviews take hours to sit through.”
Hyanggeum also nodded and added strength to Bodam's words.
“Writing is like that too.
“If you want to write for the rest of your life, you need to have concentration.”
When Jaeseok added a word, Ki-myeong's face turned red.
I decided to work really hard today, but I just couldn't concentrate.
“Yeah, I think I have a hard time concentrating.”
Ki-myeong admitted his own shortcomings.
Bodam nodded.
It was an expression that said he understood.
Jaeseok took the words.
“I also got here by gradually increasing my concentration by five or ten minutes.
It took a lot of effort until I got used to it.
“It’s the same as when you fight, you start off getting beaten up badly, but gradually you get better at fighting.”
--- pp.52~53

Students are engaged in fierce, invisible competition at school.
Only the few who are aware of it, actively jump in, and work hard can win the competition.
However, most people are structured to fail because they don't know anything and wander around confused.
Those who are aware of the competition and put in a certain amount of effort achieve some degree of success.
The experience of working hard and challenging yourself with a goal will definitely give you a competitive edge in other fields later on.
If this is the effect of studying, then it is an effect.
This is also a reason worth giving it a try.

“Brother, I keep failing at contests too.
Even if you fail ten or a hundred times, if you occasionally achieve even a small success, that gives you the courage to try again.
My parents expect me to succeed, but they know very well that there is no guarantee that I will succeed.
You need to develop the ability to overcome the feelings of defeat and disappointment you experience along the way.
“That way you become stronger.”
--- p.92

“Teacher, I don’t know which subject to choose.”
“Yes, that’s why you need to decide on your dream and career path quickly.
“Because it also plays an important role in deciding on electives.”
“Dreams and career paths?”
"There's a free semester system in the first year of middle school, right? It's advantageous to choose a career path through various activities and experiences, and then, when you get to high school, choose a university related to your interests, study the courses that best suit you, and build your resume."
“Oh, I see.”
“You have to prepare step by step like that to be able to have a fulfilling school life.”
“Then, even now, it would be good to meet a variety of mentors who can give you advice on your dreams and career path.”
--- p.140

“So, what study method helped you improve your grades the most this time?”
“It was a review.
As Bodam said, looking at a middle school reference book once was also very helpful.
At school, I remembered what the teacher said and wrote it down on a piece of paper as soon as I got home.
As I was writing down what I learned today as it came to mind, at first I couldn't think of many things, but gradually the amount I wrote on paper increased.
But a lot of the keywords I wrote down at that time came out on the test.
“Because it’s short, I remember it better.”
“Ah, so the secret to being a top student is reviewing?”
Bodam nodded as if he was right.

--- p.176

“I told other kids before, but I use a stopwatch to help me focus.
“I set the time with a stopwatch and study as if I were fighting a battle during that time.”
I also remember Jaeseok trying to do a few chin-ups or push-ups within a set time while working out.
When I was restricted like that, my body secreted adrenaline and I felt a surge of energy with the tension that felt like it was going to explode.
“If you study while increasing your concentration with a stopwatch, you can build up your study muscles.
My brother, Gi-myeong, also saw results with this method.
First, I'll set the stopwatch to thirty minutes.
“Each person must study it with full concentration.”
Bodam decided to solve the math workbook, and Jaeseok decided to solve the Korean workbook.
Hyanggeum and Minseong said they would memorize one chapter of social studies, and Hyeongyu said he would study one chapter of science.
“Okay, now I’ll press the stopwatch.”
As Bodam started the stopwatch function, tension filled the workshop.
The children were instantly absorbed in their studies.
After all, studying is a fight with yourself.
If you don't win, there will only be failure.

Publisher's Review
The grumpy Jaeseok,
Take a step towards your dream!

After becoming a father and reforming himself, Gi-myeong returns to school as a freshman with the ambition of entering university, studying professionally, and growing his rice cake shop.
This time, of course, Jae-seok, a loyalist, and his friends are all mobilized to help Ki-myung! Not only Ki-myung, but also Jae-seok, who wants to be a writer, Min-seong, who wants to be a PD, and Hyang-geum, who dreams of becoming an announcer, put into practice study methods to improve their grades one by one, listening to the study methods of Bo-ram and Ho-jin, who are top students in the entire school, as well as mentors Kim Tae-ho and Byun-byun...
However, Jae-seok, Gi-myeong, and their friends, who lack the basics and focus, are frustrated because their grades are not improving as they had hoped.
Meanwhile, the gangster group Ssangnalpa approaches the students like a poisonous mushroom, extending its tentacles and showing signs of trying to rebuild the delinquent circle.
Will Jae-seok and his friends be able to defeat the gangsters and improve their grades?

Author Goh Jeong-wook says he wrote this book to teach young people that they should not give up and must study steadily, even little by little, to achieve their future dreams, which still seem far away.
He seriously discusses the study methods of top students and social mentors, and emphasizes that studying is a way to achieve what you want, and that approaching it as training and practice for your dreams makes it a little easier.
The 'A Word from the Student Readers' section at the end of the book adds to the realism by presenting the vivid voices of students about studying.

How on earth should I study,
Why do I have to do it again?

Studying is the biggest concern for all teenagers, and I can confidently say that there is not a single teenager who does not want to study.
Everyone is making a fuss about sitting at their desks for long hours studying, going to famous academies, and getting private tutoring.
Yet, why do we hear more stories of students struggling with their studies and giving up than stories of students improving their grades? Why do some children become frustrated and even suffer from physical and mental ailments due to the stress of studying?

Based on the vast amount of data accumulated through meeting elementary, middle, and high school students, teachers, and parents in various settings more than 350 times a year, author Go Jeong-wook delves into the reality of studying that torments students from various angles in this book, “Grumpy Jae-seok Has Grown Up.”
Above all, the author advises students to have dreams.
Because only when you have clear dreams and goals can you strengthen your resolve with endless passion, build willpower, and increase your concentration.

Without dreams and goals, it's hard to resist the temptations of smartphones and games, and you'll find yourself constantly wandering and wanting to rest.
No matter how smart you are, you can't do well on a test without opening a single textbook or workbook.
If you want to improve your grades, you must increase the absolute amount of time you spend studying.
Only those who practice consistently can improve their grades and become top students in the school.
However, this does not mean that you should blindly follow the study methods of top students in the school or social mentors.

Author Goh Jeong-wook emphasizes that studying efficiently can be improved only when you find your own effective study method.
He also added that it is important to think about the true meaning of studying beyond clearly defining why you are studying and what you are studying for.
Through this new story, created by an author who listens to voices from diverse fields more than anyone else, meticulously analyzes and reflects on those voices, readers will be able to gain a clear perspective on studying and find a study method that suits them.

A word from the pre-reading reader review panel

I read "The Grumpy Jaeseok Has Returned" first! I enjoyed it, but after reading "The Grumpy Jaeseok Has Grown Up," I felt like it was written just for me! It helped me figure out why and how to study! I'm studying hard, too, and I think it's my job to strive like Jaeseok and his friends! When I'm struggling with studying, I think I should reread it and encourage myself! _Kim Eun-seo (4th grade, Asan Elementary School)

The story of the growth of the prickly Jae-seok series is always refreshing.
And it feels like my story, because it's something that happened to me or my friends while going to school.
That's why it's fun.
The new book that came out this time is about studying, which was absolutely necessary during summer vacation.
Everything about studying is explained in detail so that I can follow along, including various study methods, how to plan, how to stay motivated, how to manage time, and what challenges I face while studying.
In particular, it was great to see friends sharing their thoughts on each other's study methods and solving difficulties together.
I'm really curious to see what kind of difficulties Jaeseok and his friends will face in the next story, and how they will overcome them together with their friends.

Kim Min-ju (1st year, Daesong Middle School)

This episode of The Rough One tells a story about how children should study to achieve their dreams.
I think I saw a lot of things I usually hear while reading this book.
What my teachers and parents at school used to say.
And I thought I should emulate the way children try many things to achieve their dreams.
The main character, Jae-seok, presented his writing at his girlfriend's festival, and Jae-seok's best friend, Min-seong, took a drone filming test to become a cinematographer. I, too, should look at these kids and find my own dream, think about what I need to do to achieve that dream, and put it into practice.

_Beom Si-hu (2nd year, Songil Middle School)

I felt so, so good after reading this book.
It's like finding an oasis in the desert.
This book was so precious to me, who didn't have many books to read.
First, let's get to the main point and talk about what makes this book different, similar, and impressive compared to previous books.
First of all, the main character has changed.
If Hwang Jae-seok used to have a monopoly, now it seems like Hwang Jae-seok and his friends are the main characters.
I think it would be harmonious if we discussed and got to know each other.
Apparently, a few weeks ago, in 'Boys Grow Rich', the topic was economics and the kids discussed it, but this time, the topic is studying, so I wonder what the next topic will be.
The next similarity is that Jae-seok's fight scenes are a must in the series, and the detailed food descriptions are also must-see highlights.
Rather, I feel good because this part seems to be expressed in more detail than in the previous work.
The last impressive point is that I like that Jaeseok has grown, but I personally want to say that Gi-myeong's determination and transformation is the true growth.
The Gimyeong I knew was a fighter who spoke softly, but I never thought he would change like this.
As expected, I trust and read author Goh Jeong-wook's books.
Park Jun-young (6th grade, Daeshin Elementary School)

This book contains various study methods.
Among them, the stopwatch study method and the review study method were memorable.
This is because a person named Gi-myeong used the study method above.
So I wanted to try studying using this study method.
I also remember a famous quote from Franklin in this book.
This book contains the lesson that if you try hard, you can do it, and I'm curious about the contents of books 1 through 8, so I'd like to read them.
_Hong Jae-hyung (5th grade, Daegyo Elementary School)

Among the 'Franklin quotes' in this book, I liked the one about determination.
The reason is that I believe that we need to act, not just think about it.
I lack decisiveness.
I want to be someone who makes good decisions and doesn't waste time.
When a student who has no interest in studying decides to study, he or she is at a loss as to how to proceed.
Let's read the study methods Jaeseok has organized in this book and grow together with him.
For students, growth means learning how to study.
Once I know why I have to study, I can focus on studying when it's time to study and on playing games when it's time to play games.
But you have to be patient and persevere until it becomes a habit.
Jaeseok can do it, so I guess I can too.
I envy Jaeseok who has friends around him who grow up together with him.
I support Jaeseok as he slowly fills in each letter, each line, each page.
_Hwang Shin-dong (2nd year, Yangji Middle School)

I wanted to study with Jaeseok.
If you want to know how to study, you must read this.
As expected, author Goh Jeong-wook's books are full of fun, emotion, and even lessons.
I want to read it with my friends.
Kim Geon-hee (6th grade, Gyobang Elementary School)

What surprised me personally was the teenage pregnancy and marriage, which I hadn't seen in other young adult books.
I was quite shocked.
Because it is something I have never seen before in the countless books I have read.
I'm curious about what kind of lives Jaeseok and Gimyung had in middle school.
I'm really curious about how he got involved in a delinquent circle, from organized crime to school bullying.
And I was really envious of my friends all getting together and studying hard, helping each other, and even sharing study methods.
I thought it would be nice to have a friend like that.
_Kang Ye-jun (1st year, Dongbyeon Middle School, Daegu)
