Into the book
poinsettia
Poinsettias bloom in dense clusters of small, yellow flower buds.
Butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy the pollen of poinsettias.
The flowers are surrounded by large, bright red leaves called bracts.
The bracts turn red for only a few weeks in winter.
The Aztecs of Central America believed that this beautiful plant held the soul of a great warrior.
So, I used to offer poinsettias to the warriors.
reindeer
Reindeer live in extremely cold polar and mountainous regions, such as the Arctic tundra and the boreal forests of Europe and North America.
To survive in such cold conditions, reindeer have two layers of fur.
It has fluffy hair underneath and is covered with long, hollow hairs above.
When the fur is hollow, it becomes buoyant, allowing it to swim in rivers with floating ice.
Reindeer's fur changes color with the seasons to help them camouflage themselves.
Eye color also changes.
It turns golden in summer and blue in winter.
It adapts to different light each season.
Christmas tree
In the Northern Hemisphere, Christmas celebrations are held on the coldest day of winter.
However, in tropical and desert regions of the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas falls in the middle of summer when the hot days continue.
At this time, plants compete to bloom colorful flowers.
As such, Christmas trees are bound to be very different depending on where Christmas is celebrated.
spices
Spices are full of stories of adventure and wonder, battles and survival, festivals and celebrations.
Spices are used all over the world.
It is used as a medicine to treat diseases and has the function of preserving food.
Spices with mysterious aromas and wonderful flavors come from plants that have been treasured for thousands of years.
Spices are often used in powder form.
There are spices that are dried and used, but they cannot be eaten as is.
It can be drunk raw, stirred until thickened and made into a pudding, or sprinkled on top of cookies with sugar for added sweetness.
cobweb
In Ukraine and some Nordic countries, spiders were expensive ornaments.
There is a story handed down in this area.
Long ago on Christmas Eve, some curious spiders climbed up a tree in a poor house.
But the family in this house was so poor that they could barely decorate the tree.
The spiders were scurrying around the branches, weaving long webs.
In the morning, the spider's web magically transformed into a shimmering silver strand.
penguin
Penguins celebrate Christmas in summer.
Penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, which is the opposite of ours, and the day is longest and has the most sunlight during the winter solstice.
The soft, fluffy penguin chicks hatch under the midnight sun (a natural phenomenon in polar regions where the sun shines even at night).
They break the eggshell with a special tooth called 'nanchi' and come out with a 'beep' sound.
Penguins can be found on every continent below the equator.
From the rugged reef coasts of the tropical Galapagos Islands to the frigid Antarctica, home to emperor and Adélie penguins.
Antarctica is the largest ice mass on Earth.

Goodbye to the same old Christmas~
A Christmas adventure around the globe, from the South Pole to the North Pole
What comes to mind when you think of Christmas? Probably a picture of a snowy day, with Santa Claus riding his sled to deliver presents.
But are Christmas scenes the same around the world? For those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere, December is naturally filled with snow and ice, and the nights are long and dark.
But people living in the southern hemisphere on the other side of the globe will be celebrating Christmas in the middle of a hot summer, and will also be able to see Christmas trees in full bloom.
This book allows us to break away from the stereotypical ideas we often associate with Christmas and vividly observe the colorful Christmas scenes shared by creatures all over the world.
A colorful Christmas with 36 animals and plants
And the Christmas stories we didn't know about
When you think of Christmas trees, you probably think of tall, spiky firs, but the world is vast, and there are many Christmas trees! In the Northern Hemisphere, where Christmas celebrations take place on the coldest days of the year, it's hard to imagine a Christmas tree blooming with colorful flowers.
However, in tropical and desert regions of the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas falls in the middle of summer when the hot days continue.
In this book, we'll meet a plant called Moodja, which grows in Australia and blooms its beautiful golden flowers just in time for Christmas!
What about the story of Santa? We're probably familiar with the image of Santa arriving on a sled.
However, in Northern Europe, it is said that the Christmas goat, Jollupukki, comes with an elf riding on the goat and gives presents like Santa.
In Italy, there is a story that every year Saint Lucy comes riding on a donkey instead of a reindeer to give gifts to children.
This is also related to Christmas?
The more you look, the more amazing and wondrous the world of nature becomes.
In this way, 《DK Christmas Around the World》 introduces Christmas scenes from various regions around the world from a broad perspective, while also introducing unknown facts about the related flora and fauna.
As Christmas approaches, you'll discover interesting facts like the bright red parts of poinsettias, commonly seen alongside trees, aren't actually flowers, but bracts that surround them. You'll also learn that Santa's sleigh, pulled by the carol "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," isn't actually a reindeer, but a reindeer! And reindeer change their eye color with the seasons.
On the one hand, keywords that at first glance seem to have nothing to do with Christmas, such as spider webs, wild boars, and cats, appear, but the more you learn about them, the more impressive it is that they connect the wondrous and wonderful world of nature with the exciting and interesting subject of Christmas.
