Book Introduction
A heartbreaking lie!
Can Moon-gi raise his head proudly under the blue sky?

Hyun Deok, a pioneer of Korean children's novels, has published "The Sky is Clear" as the 11th volume in the "First Encounter with Novels" series.
"The Sky is Clear," which tells the story of Moon-gi, who feels guilty after secretly spending all the money he happened to get his hands on without telling his family, and "Sweet Potato," which tells the story of Gi-su, who begins to suspect his classmate when the sweet potato field he had cultivated for school practice is dug up, are bound together in one volume.
The vivid portrayal of youth's concerns, which remain unchanged throughout the ages, such as conscience, friendship, and difficult family circumstances, evokes widespread sympathy.
Illustrator Lee Ji-yeon, who was selected as 'Illustrator of the Year' at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, skillfully unfolds the setting of the work in the 1930s and 1940s with illustrations that are familiar to readers today, helping readers appreciate the work in depth.

A stepping stone from fairy tale to novel
A welcome reading for friends who have grown distant from books, a first encounter with a novel.

'First Encounter with a Novel' is a new novel reading series that adds rich illustrations to literary masterpieces.
With engaging stories, short volumes of less than 100 pages, and captivating illustrations, even readers unfamiliar with reading can easily approach excellent contemporary works.
In particular, in a situation where the polarization of reading ability among teenagers is getting worse day by day, it received favorable reviews from teachers and parents at schools, saying, “We have been waiting for a book like this.”
It will provide a chance for those who have given up on reading to get closer to books and fall in love with literature once again, and for children who have stopped reading after fairy tales, it will serve as a stepping stone to novels.
To pump water from a deep well, you must pour a bucket of water from above.
The "First Encounter with a Novel" series will serve as a welcome aid to those who have become increasingly distant from literature, helping them reconnect with books and inject fresh vitality into our reading culture.

Publisher's Review
A vivid story about our conscience

In Hyun-deok's works, the psychology and conflicts of the young protagonists are realistically revealed.
The title piece, "The Sky is Clear," tells the story of Moon-gi, who lives with his uncle due to difficult circumstances.
One day, while running an errand for his aunt, Moon-ki comes across an unexpected amount of money.
Moon-ki, who spent all that money on toys and comic books with his friend Su-man, is soon plagued by guilt.
Moreover, his worries deepen as he commits a second mistake due to Su-man's pressure.

As always, many children run around freely in the wide playground, chatter freely, and have fun freely, but Mun-gi alone is as dark and heavy-hearted as the darkness, unable to raise his head.
More than anything, Moon-ki wants to have the heart to enjoy himself without any hesitation under the clear sky like yesterday.
I wanted to have a heart that could look up to the sky with confidence and treat others with confidence.
―Page 51 of the text

Will Moon-ki truly be able to confess his wrongdoings and receive forgiveness from his uncle, aunt, and, most importantly, himself? This work vividly portrays the inner struggles of a young man after committing an unexpected mistake, leaving readers with a sense of unease and pity.
It resonates deeply with readers as a story about conscience that we cannot lose.

A heart that believes in and respects children as they are

In another work, "Sweet Potato," the protagonist, Kisu, witnesses the sweet potato field he had cultivated for school practice being dug up.
Someone secretly dug up the sweet potatoes and ate them.
All of his friends condemn Su-man, who comes from a poor family background, as the culprit, but Ki-su wants to protect Su-man.
As a once close friend, Ki-soo wants to keep his loyalty, and furthermore, because he believes that he should not be rashly suspicious of Su-man due to his family's financial difficulties, he sides with Su-man.
However, in the end, it is inevitable that the knight's eyes of suspicion turn towards Su-man.

Misunderstandings between friends during adolescence often stem from trivial matters.
However, the process of deepening misunderstandings and conflicts is influenced by the prejudices and preconceptions of the established society.
Author Hyun-deok keenly captures the nature of these friendships.
The stigma attached to poverty, the loud and powerful child dominating public opinion, and the similarities between these two situations are strikingly similar to those found in today's classrooms.
However, Hyun-deok does not simply scold these children.
The true virtue of this work lies in the author's honest perspective that young people can grow into better people after going through various misunderstandings, arguments, and conflicts.
The author's heart of looking at and respecting children's lives as they are is conveyed.

Hyun-deok's novels are masterpieces that cannot be left out of the history of Korean children's and youth literature, to the point that they are even included in middle school Korean language textbooks.
"The Sky is Clear" will be a meaningful opportunity to reread these works with a modern sensibility.
