Description
Book Introduction
The 7th Munhakdongne Youth Literature Award Grand Prize Winner
A delightful drama that uses understanding of the typist as warp and popular culture as weft.

The Munhakdongne Youth Literature Award is in its 7th year.
From the first award-winning work, 『Bad Family Recipe』, to last year's 『24 Theodoru』, the Munhakdongne Youth Literature Award has provided reading material on various subjects and topics. The work selected as the winner this time is 『My Superhero Picking Man』.

The story centers around a father who dreams of becoming the king of lottery after losing his job due to a back injury, and his middle school daughter who shares in his father's 'sad' and funny journey of lottery.
It was praised for creating a delightful drama using family issues and an understanding of others, such as the elderly, as the warp, and popular culture, such as claw machines, hip-hop, and the Japanese manga "One Piece" as the weft.

It has delicate and precise sentence structure, high degree of perfection, and the power of warmth and specificity.
In an age of extremes, hatred, and conflicts between generations and genders, I have no doubt that the warmth and sincerity of this work will contribute, even if only slightly, to understanding others and dispelling the darkness of the times. _Judges' Comments (Kim Jin-kyung, Yoo Young-jin, Yoon Seong-hee, Lee Geum-i)

Publisher's Review
welcome.
You are now a part of the Gacha World!
“Is there anything you want? Just tell me.
“I’ll pull them all out.”

My father is very depressed due to an unexpected back problem and unemployment.
I can't even enjoy my daily life to the fullest because of back pain that makes it difficult to sit for even 30 minutes, and I become as withered as an expired vegetable.
The only work is housework and rehabilitation exercises.
The strength that helped me endure those difficult times was the manga "One Piece" and hip-hop music.
Then one day, as if by fate, the father and his daughter Jinseo come across a claw machine in front of a local convenience store.
Inside the machine was a One Piece character figure that Jinseo admired so much.
Each round is thrilling, but the thrill of pulling out the target is as good as a soft drink.
What started out as a fun endeavor to fulfill his daughter's wish ends up sparking a new life goal for the father.
“I will become the king of lottery!”

I choose, therefore I am.
The appearance of the Gacha Man with precise design, extremely strong hand skills, and invincible power!

Thanks to the will of the wriggling tyrant, Jinseo's desk becomes a display case of figures drawn from a gacha machine instead of books, and the dining table is also taken over by small appliances obtained from a gacha machine with his mother's tacit approval.
However, not all the items displayed in the claw machine fell like autumn leaves in front of Dad's strategy.
While Dad and Jinseo are having a hard time, an old man with the aura of a reclusive master appears and teaches them a secret technique called 'Shoulder Attack'.
They soon hit it off, becoming a complete trio and even going on expeditions to get their hands on the prize.

“When I set my sights on a target, my father throws the stick and my grandfather hits the machine with his shoulder...”
_From the text

As if he were Gosanja Kim Jeong-ho, he travels around making maps of lottery machines, researching lottery technology and the characteristics of machines, and even opening a lottery broadcast on AfreecaTV. For his father, lottery is no longer a hobby, but his life itself.
Jinseo's friends also want to look up to their father as a teacher, and passersby enjoy watching their father filming for AfreecaTV as if they were watching the national MC Yoo Jae-suk.
In the midst of excitement and cheers, difficulties tend to creep in without notice.
Before the rookie hero who declared that he would become the king of gacha, a stronger opponent appears, wielding clothes and accessories drawn from the gacha game.

Everyone called him the glass ghost.
He was a public enemy to the claw machine owners, and almost a hero to us.
Almost every machine he touched was torn down.
After finishing the game, he walked away from the empty machine, his profile just like any superhero from Marvel Comics. _From the text

Could this man be the legendary Glass Ghost, a legend among the "Pulp-gimers"? But Dad, believing that overcoming adversity is the true spirit of Pulp-gi, decides to take on this superior opponent.

What kind of Superman is Dad? He protects Mom, protects me, and protects everyone.

I will protect myself.

"My Superhero Picker" is a desperate battle between a fifteen-year-old narrator and his father.
The dad who dreams of being a superhero is a super-ordinary, ordinary person who is by no means perfect.
However, the way he recovers from disappointment and moves towards brilliance is no less than that of a Marvel Comics hero.
Hwang Dal-su, who does everything half-heartedly but gives his all when it comes to drawing, his mother who silently watches over his father as he struggles with life, and Hwang Dal-su's first love, the old lady who runs the snack shop, are all like that.
The male friend Siwon, who gradually makes Jinseo develop feelings for the opposite sex, and the connections with complete strangers she met through a lottery are a bonus.

Elements of subculture and popular culture, such as lottery tickets, figure skating, hip-hop, Afreeca TV, and the Japanese manga "One Piece," are fully integrated, and solidarity between families and neighbors is running side by side.
Above all, the world of lottery, which unfolds like an action movie, is interesting.

After losing his job, the father begins to enjoy the leisure he had not been able to enjoy before, listening to hip-hop, reading comics and watching dramas, and communicating with his daughter Jinseo, who is in her second year of middle school.
It is not Jinseo, but her father who is obsessed with picking and conquering the world.
Thanks to the accurate portrayal of that image, the father comes across as a human being recovering into himself rather than simply an irresponsible and immature father.
Also, through the company of a father who is different from other fathers, Jinseo experiences things that cannot be experienced in the daily life of going to and from school and academy, and her life expands.

A pure real story by the author of Pokkimono Man

Author Woo Gwang-hoon debuted with a short story in the Kyunghyang Shinmun New Year's Literary Contest, and later won the Today's Writer Award for "A Joyful Gunman's Life in Plymouth." He also won a poetry award in the Maeil Shinmun New Year's Literary Contest in 2011.
He broke his long silence and came to see his readers.
That too, with the material called ‘pulgi’.
In 2013, he suffered from back pain of unknown cause and was unable to sit for more than 20 minutes. However, it was the game of lottery that gave him new energy.
It is thanks to him that the world of lottery, which cannot be depicted without firsthand experience, is vividly revealed through the space he lives in, Daegu, and the people he meets.
The author's final request, as if happily confessing to himself, is this, "There was no chair in the world that could reduce pain."
