Into the book
Seonjip is the child who helped me endure the long, dark, tunnel-like time at the end of summer vacation in fifth grade when I was left behind in Busan.
The child who first made me open my mouth during a time when I was feeling sad and only the video was playing without any sound.
Then, one day, the child disappeared like a mirage.
To meet again like this... ... Is this what fate calls it? I was happy to see him again, but at the same time, I felt a strange sense of unease.
--- p.39
When people say twins, they always say:
That would be fun.
Then he asks:
Have you tried switching schools and fooling people?
It may be the first time someone is asking this question, but to us who are listening, it is a very cliché question.
Actually, we've never done anything like that.
To those who see us, we may look alike, but we are so different from each other that it is impossible to imitate each other.
In other words, similar appearances are meaningful only to those who see them, but not to us.
--- P.42
This anger must not end.
Because anger is an emotion that makes people active.
If this anger ends without a fight, I will be the one who has to earn a living, just like my grandmother said.
I didn't want to be pushed around silently anymore.
At least I don't want to be pushed back by Geo again.
I will continue to be angry, and I will force myself to fan the flames of anger.
In that sense, my anger is healthy and justified.
I couldn't shout 'I'm okay!' again, even though I didn't mean it.
If I have to steal a chair, I will.
Because I want to sit down now too.
I will definitely be the winner of the chair-snatching contest.

Publisher's Review
★ Selected as an excellent literary book by Literature Sharing
★ Recommended by librarians at the National Library for Children and Young Adults
★ Highly recommended by 100 teachers, parents, and teenagers
Anxiety about the workplace that everyone faces at least once
About the courage to shake off the end and rise again
Author Park Ha-ryeong, known for her witty sentences and simple stories, has returned with her novel, "Snatching the Chair."
The novel tells the story of Eun-oh, the older sister, who faces discrimination and loss as a twin sister.
Perhaps because they are twins, Eun-oh and his younger brother Ji-oh seem similar to people.
A similar appearance is meaningful only to the onlookers, not to the person involved.
This is the same principle that teenagers may look similar to adults, but each has a different story inside them.
Mom and Dad chose which child to leave at their maternal grandparents' house as if they were drawing lots.
Was it because there were two of them, or was it really an unavoidable situation?
Eun-oh desperately hoped that she wouldn't be the only one left behind at her grandmother's house, but it was no use.
A sudden move or transfer can be upsetting.
I needed to be prepared to accept being separated from my family.
Eun-oh felt like there was no more room to sit.
Even putting aside school and society, I felt uneasy about my place within the confines of my home.
This is how the search for the stolen seat and chair began.
“No, it’s my turn this time!”
Finding my healthy share, not a weak concession
We are used to competition.
The competitive structure arises from taking tests at school.
This competition is embedded in many aspects of life, including college entrance exams and employment.
It is not an empty promise to live in a competitive society.
Eun-oh has developed a habit of giving in and being considerate to his twin brother, Geo.
Mom simply summed up the situation by saying, "I believe you" and "There is no one else but you."
My mother had so much faith in me.
I believe that as the eldest child, I will make concessions for the health of my younger sibling in my mother's womb, that I will listen to my grandmother and do well like a good child, and that this place is different from Seoul, so I will be able to study less and have fun.
My mother's low, soft, and sweet speech was so unfamiliar that I couldn't say anything.
The word 'believe' repeated like a refrain became like a heavy blanket that gently pressed down on my body, making it impossible for me to move.
A more powerful statement was, “Aren’t you nicer than Geo?”
p.25
But why should I be nice to him? Why do I always have to give in?
p.157
It's been a long time since I noticed that the place was slowly being pushed out.
Eun-oh wondered why she had to endure it silently.
Even the belief that it would be my turn if I just waited a little while disappeared.
It felt like I had fallen off the chair I was sitting on, barely touching my butt.
This anxiety is Eun-oh's unique emotion, and it follows her closely as the novel progresses.
"Stolen Chair" is a work that has resonated with many people by dealing with the anxiety of having a seat.
The position and shape of the chair may be different for each person, but there will be times when you struggle to protect or take it away.
Proper competition actually has positive effects.
How about taking a look at what positions I feel anxious about and how I deal with them?
Through this novel, the author encourages us to embark on a bold rebellion by taking care of our own share first.
Because it is difficult to care for others without doing my part.
It tells us to take a good look at ourselves and look back on ourselves first, and then prepare a chair for ourselves, the most precious thing in the world.
It is a message to remember that we are the ones who can create the chair that is just right for our body and mind.
Let's rediscover our seats and the courage we've been hiding within them with the newly revamped "Chair Steal."
