Suspicious Apartment
Description
Book Introduction
The turbulent coming-of-age story of a thirteen-year-old girl who shook up a quiet apartment.

Park Hyun-sook's new full-length children's story, "Suspicious Apartment," depicts what happens when a thirteen-year-old girl stays in an apartment built for people living alone.
Because her parents were getting divorced, she was temporarily left with her aunt who was living alone, but the girl's perspective on adapting to reality in a bright and confident manner is sometimes humorous and sometimes witty.
Seeing your child grow up understanding the importance of caring for and caring for others will help you think about why we must live together in an increasingly bleak and dry world.

"great.
“Don’t worry, I’ll do what I have to do.”
I said confidently, even smiling.
My aunt shrugged her shoulders as if she was surprised.
Did you know I was going to whine?
--- p.24~25

“I also want to live alone like my aunt later on.
“Please tell me how to live well alone.”
“How to live well alone? Well, I don’t know.
“Do I look like I’m doing well on my own in your eyes?”
Well, except that the house is a mess, like a trash can, and there's a broken television lying around.
“There is no special method.
I just need to think about my own business.
“I’m so busy that I can’t even see other people.”
--- p.77

“I just can’t understand.
Why do you want to live alone?
My uncle is 34 years old and he said he will never get married and will live alone.
Maybe that's why, after spending a few days with him, I realized that my uncle only cares about himself.
When my uncle is full, he doesn't even ask me if I've eaten or if I'm hungry.
Even this morning it was like that.
When it comes to poop, some people take a long time to poop, while others take a quick time to poop. But this guy can't wait for other people to poop, so he makes a fuss.
“In our country house, eight people in our family use one bathroom, and yet they tolerate it so well.”
--- p.91

“What are you going to do about it? You should stop meddling in other people’s business.
This is an apartment complex with a lot of people living alone.
There are people who live alone because they have no choice, but most people live alone because they don't want to be interfered with by others and want to be free.
I told you before, I want to live alone too.
“I really hate kids like you who meddle in other people’s business and meddle in their business.”
--- p.129

“I think it would be difficult for you to live alone, Yejin.”
Hojin said while eating red bean porridge.
“It’s interesting to see you taking an interest in other people’s business.
Honestly, tell your uncle or your aunt about the 22nd floor grandfather.
"So? People who don't go to work don't necessarily have to show up on time, right?" you'll say right away.
If I told them I'd pressed all the elevator buttons, they'd say, 'So? Is there a law in Korea that says adults can't play with elevators?'
--- p.138

“It’s not our business to interfere.
So, from this moment on, you guys should stop caring.”
My aunt and Hojin's uncle had become on the same side and were speaking to me and Hojin in a threatening manner.
“Let’s do it between us.
I'm sure your uncle and my aunt also think it's strange.
However, I think adults have a hard time taking action because they have so many things to worry about.”
--- p.169~170

I thought that rather than living alone, putting up with mess, putting up with inconvenience, acting as if nothing happened when I was lonely, being shameless, and never interfering in other people's business, it would be better to clean up together when things get messy, fix broken things together, and chat while eating my grandmother's favorite sweet potatoes.
I'm slowly getting involved in my grandmother's business.
Oh, that sounds fun.
I've been just bothering to answer my grandmother's questions without thinking about how much I'm bothering her.
Foot! Grandma, wait.

Publisher's Review
One way to live well alone is to endure the mess.
Two, endure the discomfort.

Third, act casually even when you feel lonely.
Fourth, be shameless.

Five, do not interfere in other people's business.

“I will slowly change like that too!”
The last summer vacation as an elementary school student.
Yeojin, who started living separately from her mom and dad, comes to the apartment where her aunt lives.
Because I learned how to live alone from my single aunt, I decided to become independent soon.
But this apartment, which was built for people living alone, is a bit puzzling.
When people get into an elevator, they just stare at the walls.
It is also forbidden to be curious about other people's lives.
Yeo-jin, who was struggling to adjust to living in this dreary apartment, discovers that the elevator keeps stopping on the 22nd floor.
Then, when he came down from the 22nd floor, he saw that there was no one in the elevator and only a heavy plastic bag was left, so he decided to find out who lived on the 22nd floor.
After wandering around the apartment complex, I found out that the person who was doing the elevator prank was the old man who lived in room 2201.
Although his curiosity is satisfied, the apartment security guard finds Yeo-jin suspicious as she is poking around here and there.
Yeojin decides not to show interest in other people so as not to be kicked out of her aunt's house.
But Yeojin's resolve doesn't last long.
One day, when Grandpa 2201 hasn't been seen for a long time, Yeojin discovers something on the veranda of 2201 and tells the adults, but the adults just keep repeating that there's nothing they can do...

“Where is our ‘interest’ directed?”
Watering the 'interest' tree, which only withers in front of people.
Yeojin and Hojin are worried when they don't see the old man in room 2201 whom they see every day.
I tried calling the intercom on room 2201, but there was no answer.
The two men press the security guard and even talk to their aunt and uncle, but all they get is, “Don’t worry about it and don’t meddle.”
Because you shouldn't try to interfere with other people's private lives.
The two children who try to persuade adults make us look back at ourselves, who take for granted that 'I am me and others are others' and hesitate to look at our neighbors, under the nonsensical excuse of 'respecting others.'

The story of the aunt who told Yeojin, who asked her how to live well alone, “If you only think about yourself, you will be too busy to even see other people” rings another alarm bell.
We show excessive interest in movies, dramas, celebrities, and accidents, but are indifferent to places that really need our affectionate attention.
Are we perhaps becoming stingy monsters, fixated only on flashy spectacles and immediate gains, when it comes to the small but precious things around us and our immediate neighbors?

Give a warm hug to the wounded child
‘Attention’ that melts even the frozen heart,
Sincere 'interest' can change the world!
Yeojin, an ordinary girl with no special qualities, was still a strong and confident child even after her parents separated.
However, after being mistaken for a thief and seeing her mother and father constantly in conflict, Yeojin decides to close her heart.
It's not easy to ignore someone struggling in a new environment, even if you turn off your curiosity radar that's constantly working.
Yeo-jin, who tries to be bright and cheerful but gets hurt, gradually changes after going through many twists and turns and deciding to pay attention to her neighbors.
When he moved from his aunt's house to his grandmother's house, which he disliked, he decided to gradually 'meddle' in his grandmother's affairs, saying, "It would be nice to fix broken things together, eat boiled sweet potatoes that grandma likes, and chat with her."
The child who realized that just by giving someone his or her gaze and attention, he or she can make the world a warmer place has grown a little.
Concern for others is sometimes considered worrisome.
But is it desirable for children to think of the attention that nurtures their hearts and thaws the frozen world as something bad or unnecessary? I hope this work will inspire readers to consider how healthy attention can change the world.
