Should we live against the times or follow the iron?
"Know the Time, Live the Year" is a 'life manual' written by a writer who has been involved in environmental movements and ecological education for a long time, and is explained in terms of the seasons.
It is a humanities that reflects on life, an education for future generations, and an ecological philosophy for environmental and ecological education.
This book is a 'humanities of seasonal life' seen through the flow of time and the lives of natural creatures that live in accordance with the times.
Like math and science, not everyone can come up with the same answer.
This means that anyone who reads this book can come up with different thoughts and stories.
The meaning of 'time' is understood through the story of the 24 solar terms to explain how to live a life that suits the 'time'.
While there have been books that focus on the 24 solar terms as a farming calendar, seasonal foods, and seasonal customs, there have been few books that have written about life stories that are embedded in everyday life.

Into the book
This book begins in the winter season.
What I realized while studying the seasons is that the seasons of the year are not spring, summer, fall, and winter, but winter, spring, summer, and fall.
Nothing can be started without preparation.
If you start without preparation, you will definitely end up without results.
Winter is a time of preparation.
Winter is the time when plants build up the strength to bloom in the spring, bear fruit, grow fruit in the summer, and ripen fruit in the fall.
We need to strengthen our vitality in winter so that we can live our lives in spring, summer, and fall and produce properly ripened fruit.
Humans are born in spring and end their lives in fall.
For humans, winter is their parents, ancestors, history, and culture.
Furthermore, it is the nature of the universe that made you who you are.
My spring, summer, and fall can be properly created when I have good parents and ancestors, a great history and culture, and a healthy and beautiful universe.

---From "Introductory Remarks"

The seasons repeat every year, but they are never the same; they are always new.
The flow of seasons is always changing.
The same goes for seasonal living.
Living in the seasons is a life that is always renewed through cycles and repetitions.
Wisława Szymborska, Nobel Prize winner in Literature, said, "There is no second chance.
There is not a single day that is repeated.
Therefore, he said, 'You are beautiful in a new way every day.'
Every day must be new to be alive, otherwise it is like a dead day.
Living by the seasons is like living anew every day.
A life that is as if one were alive but dead is a life that is reckless, foolish, and ignorant of one's surroundings.
They say life is a journey, not a race.
So the present is a gift.

--- p.63

Winter is not the season of ending, but the season of beginning.
When I am born, my life begins in spring and ends in autumn.
Winter is a motherly season that gives birth to spring, summer, and fall.
Depending on what kind of winter it is, spring is different, and summer and fall are different.
Winter includes spring, summer, and fall.
Winter is not just one season, because our lives, which are spring, summer, and fall, become someone's winter.
All human life, history, and culture that has gone before can all be said to be winter.

The meaning of Gyeongchip is to know the time of spring and to wake up.
Just as frogs and bugs wake up on the day of Gyeongchip and prepare for spring, we too must wake up, recognize the season of our lives, and prepare for it.
First, you must know the time and live accordingly.
Now I know what time it is for me and how I should live.
To stay awake, we must first ask ourselves: Who am I, how am I living, and am I living with an understanding of the meaning of life?
Next, I must ask myself what era I live in and what zeitgeist I live by, and I must constantly ask myself whether I truly understand the natural flow of heaven and earth, the seasons, and the reality of the one and only Earth ecosystem.

--- p.136

There is no life that can survive without the sun.
All life is born and survives absolutely dependent on the sun.
The sun gives birth to and sustains all life, but it does not possess or cling to anything as its own, nor does it boast or show off its power.
When we look at the life of nature, we see that it shares the unconditional gift of love from the sun with other living beings.
So, sunlight is the eternal power of life, the power of love, that gives birth to, nurtures, and sustains all life.
This is the will of heaven (the book of the law of nature) and the teaching of nature.
It is a true life that resembles nature and lives like nature.

--- p.181

The beginning of autumn becomes its own autumn only for those living things that prepare for it in advance.
The sky, or nature, creates the optimal environment for all living things to survive.
Autumn is a season that turns the mind that was turned outward inward.
What should we think about as we prepare for and welcome autumn? Autumn is the season when fruit ripens.
So, how do I ripen my fruit? I need to know what a ripe fruit is.

As my understanding of life deepens / my love of life grows / and my discomfort increases / There must be more discomfort / and my thoughts change / There must be more discomfort / and my life changes / There must be more discomfort / and our world changes / Studying life is about facing uncomfortable truths / If it's not uncomfortable, it's not a living life / because our world is not a world of life.
(Yoo Jong-ban's poem, "An Inconvenient Truth" in full)

Publisher's Review
The 24 solar terms we know are not simply a division of time that divides the year into 24 periods.
The author says that just like a tree that lives according to the seasons, our lives also have a way of life that suits the times.
“In winter, the cold air strengthens the vitality within the seeds, in spring, the warm air of sunlight causes them to bloom leaves and flowers and produce their own fruits, in summer, the scorching heat helps those fruits grow well, and in fall, the cold air of dew and frost helps those fruits ripen properly.
Just like trees, people have their own way of life in each season: winter, spring, summer, and fall, and they have a responsibility to create that way of life.” Knowing the seasons means knowing your time like a tree, preparing yourself, and creating your own way at that time.

Since the emergence of all life on Earth, including humans, life has continued with the blueprint of life called DNA.
The biggest influence on this design is the climate, or 'seasons'.
Therefore, the seasons can be said to be the 'instruction manual for life'.
You need to know the seasons to live your life properly.

Adults often say things like, “When will you grow up?” or “You’re so immature!” to children.
When you act without thinking, without knowing the circumstances, without discerning right from wrong, you are often called “irresponsible.”
“Get some iron,” he says.
However, in this book, 'iron' refers to the principles of the times rather than indiscriminate thoughts or actions.
These are the seasons we use in our daily lives, such as spring, summer, fall, and winter.
'It takes time.' 'Knowing time' means 'knowing the time.'
In other words, it means living knowing the meaning and reason of the times.
Nature is a 'wordless book of heaven' that gives us wisdom about life that is deeper than any book written by humans.
This book is a must-read for school teachers, parents, eco-educators, soon-to-be-married people, and anyone who seriously reflects on life and wants to learn how to read the moments embedded in everyday life.

"Knowing the Time to Live" asks the question, "Have I really matured?"
'Where am I now?' 'How should I live now?' 'What should I do to achieve that?' Based on field experience, it proposes an ecological alternative lifestyle by combining ecological living with seasonal living.
It will be an opportunity to think about living in harmony with nature and find alternatives through living according to the seasons.

Four years after the publication of the first edition, I have continued to observe the seasons, study and educate myself about them, and personally live by them, and this revised edition contains a deeper understanding and reflection.
We have refined and supplemented the parts that were difficult to understand to make them easier to understand.
The humanistic understanding of the 24 solar terms can be interpreted in various ways depending on the viewer's different knowledge and experience.
Beginning with the publication of this revised edition, we will continue to enrich it with new content and reflections.
