Publisher's Review
Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstract art
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), born in Russia and active in Germany and France, was one of the pioneers of 20th-century art.
Today he is understood as the founder and representative theorist of abstract art.
He founded an artist group known as the Blue Rider in Munich with Franz Marc and others.
From then on, his art became increasingly free from subject matter, culminating in his first abstract watercolors produced in 1910.
Kandinsky constantly sought a correlation with music in his theories.
And as in music, in each of his recordings, made up of a medium influenced by harmony and tonality, Kandinsky sought to achieve a pure harmony of color through the interplay of various shades.
Gauguin said, “Everything must be sacrificed for the sake of pure color.”
Kandinsky was the first to realize this, and it had a wide-ranging influence on artists.
"Art is in many ways similar to religion." ― Wassily Kandinsky
