Description
Book Introduction
In the fragments of everyday life
Grabbing the grace that comes as if by chance
Eugene Peterson's poetry
70 Poems by Eugene Peterson
Eugene Peterson, known as the pastor of pastors and the author of over 40 books, has published in Korean his poetry collection "Holy Fortune," dedicated to his wife to commemorate their 55th wedding anniversary.
As he entered the world of poetry by reading the Psalms of David, Eugene Peterson gradually discovered the possibilities of language through poetry, and as a pastor, he was able to find a reverence for words and the Word.
Through the commonality between pastors and poets, and the fact that the prophets and psalmists of the Bible were poets, he gained deep insight into integrating preaching and prayer in his own pastoral ministry.
He regarded poetry as a "language exercise of grace," and expected his readers, as he did with the Psalms, to "linger and listen" rather than "understand" the poems.
So, the meaning of his poetry can be felt more deeply when contemplated rather than interpreted.

Into the book
“As I began to embrace my calling and identity as a pastor, I realized that pastors and poets have much in common.
We use words with reverence, immerse ourselves in the concrete realities of everyday life, guard against abstractions, explore the glory of the ordinary, warn against illusions, and pay attention to the subtle interconnections of rhythm, meaning, and spirit.
The fact that the prophets and psalmists of the Bible were all poets had special meaning for me.
They have provided me with like-minded partners in integrating my prophetic and psalmistic work, that is, preaching and prayer.
… … What I have discovered is that being around poets, men and women who care about their words and speak honestly, who respect and cherish the pure and powerful power of words, keeps me awake.
"Be biblically awake, be awake to Jesus."

Publisher's Review
Singing the sacred meaning hidden in everyday life through the magic of metaphor.
"Holy Fortune" is divided into three parts.
Part 1, “Holy Fortune,” is a series of poems on the eight blessings that the author completed over a period of seven years.
He confesses that these psalms led him to turn his daily witness toward the Kingdom of God and to separate himself from the ways of the world.
Part 2, “Rustle Grass,” sings of the life of salvation and the kingdom of God contained in ordinary things.
Part 3, “Smooth Stones,” is a collection of occasional poems that I came across by chance in various situations.
For him, David's 'five smooth stones' are a metaphor for finding meaning in all the little things he encounters while following Jesus.
Peterson's poems, including the Beatitudes series, which depict words and faith using language drawn from nature and everyday life, should be read slowly, savoring each poem rather than reading them quickly.
The more we read these short but deeply moving poems, the more they will lead us to a place of meditation and prayer.
