Discussion Questions

Into the book
The greatest gift in life is life itself.
Your life is never an accident.
You exist because God wanted you to.
So how do you find your life's purpose—the ultimate reason for everything you do? A purpose big enough to capture your attention, deep enough to capture your passion to its very core, and enduring enough to inspire you until your last breath?
There is absolutely nothing more powerful, more intimate, or more important than aligning ourselves with the purpose of life and the universe by heeding and following the calling of our Creator God.
-Page 11

There has been a tendency to reduce the immense importance of God's calling to the individual's life.
So the calling became all about us.
It's about me, myself, and 'because we're worth it.'
While calling is certainly something that comes to each of us personally and intimately, it is also a call from God, a call to a role that we strive for while looking toward a new humanity, a new way of life, a new heaven and a new earth.
Therefore, it is a command that is both amazingly creative and comprehensive.
So it's no surprise that God's calling has shaped history, having lifelong consequences on a personal level and transforming entire cultures on a societal level.
-Page 12

There is something we must know from the beginning.
We're not talking about calling solely in terms of personal, spiritual, or religious dimensions—only in terms of your personal purpose and mine.
A calling is all of these things, but it is also more than just the truth about you and me.
God calls us to do our part: to right injustice in the world, to renew the earth, and to take God's message to the ends of the earth.
Therefore, the calling contains a truth of astonishing significance, a truth whose implications are of the utmost importance.
That command encompasses the entire earth, the entire course of history, and every moment of our lives.
-Page 15

Deep within our hearts, we desire to discover and fulfill a purpose greater than ourselves.
Only such a higher purpose can lead us to heights we could never reach on our own.
For each of us, our true purpose in existence is something truly personal and an object of passion.
It's about knowing what we're here to do and why.
Kierkegaard wrote in his Journal:
“It is about understanding myself and knowing what God truly wants me to do.
It is to discover the truth for me, and to find an ideology for which I can live and die.” - p. 22

What is "calling"? I'll define it as follows.
Calling is the truth that God has called us so decisively that, in response to His summons and grace, all that we are, all that we do, and all that we have is devotedly and dynamically invested in His service.
-Page 25

Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, “In the age of faith, the ultimate goal of life lies beyond life itself.”
That is the role of calling.
Jesus said, “Follow me” 2,000 years ago.
And he changed the course of history.
For this reason, calling provides the Archimedean point that faith needs to move the world.
This is why calling is the most comprehensive turning point in human experience, the most profound motivation, the ultimate reason for living in all of history.
A calling begins and ends ages of faith and lives of faith by setting the ultimate goal of life beyond this world.
Responding to your calling is the central purpose of life—discovering and fulfilling God's purpose for your life.
-Page 28

We become our true selves and become who we truly are only when we respond to Christ and follow His call.
Therefore, modern people have a completely backwards view of the issue of identity.
That is because they pretend to be certain about themselves while not being certain about God.
Those who follow Christ are the exact opposite.
We may not be sure about ourselves, but we are sure about God.
-Page 93

As followers of Christ, our primary calling is by Him, to Him, and for Him.
First and foremost, we are called by someone (God), not to something (motherhood, politics, teaching) or somewhere (urban slums or Mongolia).
Our secondary calling is to remember the sovereign God who rules over all things, and to ensure that everyone, everywhere, and in everything thinks, speaks, lives, and acts entirely for Him - p. 101

A life lived in tune with God's decisive calling is a life lived before a singular audience—a singular audience—that pushes aside all others.
...
The Puritans placed great emphasis on living before God, their only audience.
John Cotton develops this audience theme further.
He quotes Ephesians 6:6, saying that the calling of a servant is “not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers.”
Rather, he says, “We live by faith in our calling, believing that by serving God we serve humanity, and by serving humanity we serve God.”
Is this just a Puritan pun? Not at all.
Living life before Him, our only audience, changes everything about us.
-Page 164

The important thing is that imitating Christ is not a process of self-transformation.
Because it is an essential element in responding to a calling.
The calling is the decisive word of God, and His creative power is the great secret to bringing about change.
Think of Ezekiel's vision of dry bones or Jesus' miracle of raising Lazarus from the tomb.
If they heard the voice and saw the result, could they say that the listeners responded on their own? Is it possible for fragile, dry bones to reassemble themselves into a body? Can a corpse alone shake off the dust of death?
It is the same when we try to imitate Christ and fail to change ourselves.
Following Christ is an essential part of following Him, meaning that when He calls us, He empowers us to fulfill the purpose for which we are called.

“It was only after reading ‘The Calling’ that I realized how much I didn’t know about its meaning.”
-Gordon MacDonald, author of "Ordering the Inner World and Spiritual Growth"

Where and how do we find our purpose in life? Can we truly live fulfilled by that meaning? This expanded and revised edition of "Calling," written by world-renowned apologist Os Guinness, builds on over 40 years of research! From youth facing crucial choices to the waning years of life, this book explores the key to finding purpose in life—a crucial question for everyone—and the principles that lead to fulfillment.

This book tells the story of people with a 'calling', crossing over the Bible, history, and experience.
It provides a biblical and balanced view of calling, moving away from the misconception that only full-time Christian ministry is our calling or that vocation and calling are the same by emphasizing vocation in society.

It provides rich and insightful answers to questions about how to discover your calling, the connection between calling and personal growth, the impact of calling on success, and the lives of those who have been called by God.
It is written for people who ponder the meaning of life and strive to pursue and fulfill their calling.

In particular, this expanded revised edition not only revised the entire book, but also added six new chapters: Chapters 3, 4, 5, 15, and 17, so that readers can read one chapter a day and complete the entire book in one month.
