Description
Book Introduction
This book is a biography of Takashi Nagai, a scientist and humanitarian.
Takashi Nagai entered medical school due to the influence of his father, who was a doctor.
Although he inherited Shintoism from his parents, he abandoned the Shinto faith that his ancestors had believed in for generations due to the influence of scientific rationalism and became an atheist.
The sudden death of his mother opens his eyes to religion, which he had previously considered unscientific, and he begins to find meaning in life.
In particular, Pascal's "Pensées," which he read during that time, became the fuse for his conversion to Christianity, and he was drafted into the war with China, where he had a valuable experience that was indispensable for his search for God.

After completing his military service and returning to Nagasaki, he could no longer postpone his spiritual longing and received baptism. He married Midori, the daughter of a 250-year-old witness to the history of the Japanese church, as his life partner.
However, 13 years of teaching radiology to students as a doctor and wrestling with excessive exposure to radiation to treat tuberculosis patients, which was common at the time, resulted in Takashi Nagai being diagnosed with leukemia, a terminal illness.
Through this, I came to realize through my wife that both life and death are beautiful if they are for the glory of God.
On August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb launched by the US military was dropped on Nagasaki, and in an instant, the city was reduced to ashes.
80% of the population of 200,000 died, and he also took the life of his beloved wife.
He himself is a victim of the atomic bomb, and he lives an exemplary life as a believer, uniting medical staff and the survivors to practice love for one's neighbors.

Also, the medical report, written based on the experience and observations gained while treating the numerous victims dying from the effects of the atomic bomb, is the world's first scientific writing and helped in the treatment of the victims dying in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Moreover, from a believer's perspective, he viewed Nagasaki as a 'sacrificial offering' to atone for the sins of all peoples involved in World War II, and devoted the rest of his life to writing.
This book helps us understand the history and culture of the Japanese church, and provides a glimpse into the agony of one man's pursuit of peace and the impact of the atomic bomb on human history.
