His lion's roar, a powerful call for prayer, sets cold hearts on fire and sends them running to the prayer closet.
However, he is not a spiritual white-faced scholar who only prays in his room.
He was a man who had a keen understanding of the hardships of life and the pain of death.
He was a 'man of field prayer' who, while serving as a military chaplain in the midst of the American Civil War, broke through the abyss of human suffering through prayer.
He himself was captured by the Northern Army and suffered hardships in prison.
He was never a man who prayed in a greenhouse.
So his writings have the power of a prophetic insight that penetrates the essence of humanity and shakes our souls.

We don't need fancy theories or fancy words about prayer now.

Reform of Prayer
Our time now is one that requires a comprehensive reform of prayer.
