Biblical Characters Through the Eyes of Psychiatry
Biblical Characters Through the Eyes of Psychiatry
Description
Book Introduction
“Even the heroes of faith suffered.
The moment their story sounds like my story,
“The real healing begins.”

An Interesting Intersection of the Bible and Psychiatry
ㆍAnalyzing the mental health of key figures in the Bible using DSM-5
A collection of clinical case studies from the Bible containing actual diagnoses and treatment plans.
ㆍA customized prescription from a crisis intervention counselor to restore your soul.

Cain suffered from borderline personality disorder, David suffered from depression, Elijah suffered from burnout? Even biblical figures we often think of as heroes of faith suffered just as we do.
If it weren't for God's grace, they might have lived lives similar to ours.
How about we also seek the help of the Bible and psychiatry to obtain that grace?
A book that makes us reflect on ourselves and our community through their stories, 『Biblical Characters Seen Through the Eyes of Modern Medicine』 is a unique attempt by the author, a crisis intervention counselor in the emergency room of a general hospital in the United States, to explore and analyze 12 major biblical figures, including Cain, Job, and Jonah, using the diagnostic criteria of modern psychiatry (DSM-5).

This book sheds clinical light on the inner suffering experienced by biblical figures, demonstrating that it was not simply a matter of faith, but rather a "disease of the heart."
Furthermore, it reveals God's principles of personalized healing and recovery for each individual, and presents a path to holistic recovery that allows spirit, soul, and body to be balanced.
We hope that the author's keen insights, which blur the lines between faith and science, will provide practical comfort and hope to all who struggle with mental and emotional pain.

Publisher's Review
The main patients I see are psychiatric patients with depression, suicide attempts, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, drug addiction, alcohol dependence, etc.
I worked to diagnose and develop treatment plans for them, especially for patients who had attempted suicide or were hospitalized under the influence of drugs or alcohol. After completing physical therapy and intervention, I would consult with the patients, quickly develop a diagnosis and treatment plan, and then help connect them to other psychiatric wards, outpatient treatment, or community resources.

As a Christian counselor, when I counsel patients, I find that their problems are not simply superficial psychiatric symptoms.
I have seen many cases where the root cause of the problem is that there is a more serious problem behind it.
This patient was not cured simply by alleviating the symptoms with medication.
Only by eliminating the underlying problem can one fully recover.
With a heart that loves the patient, I prayed to God and asked Him to tell me the cause of the problem.
Each time, God gave me wisdom.
Then, when I carefully talked to the patient, he was surprised to find that this was the root of his problem. (Omitted)

Since my area of expertise is diagnosis and treatment planning, this book also focuses on diagnosis and treatment planning.
Therefore, in this book, we will examine the psychiatric diagnoses of various people and the treatment methods used by God and Jesus in the Bible.
Just as everyone has a diverse and unique background, understanding the causes of mental illness and providing the right therapeutic approach presents many challenges and limitations.
There is a mistake that Christians in particular can easily make: the approach that spiritual problems are the cause and background of all problems.
Of course, the answer lies in approaching God, the Creator who created us.
But in the Bible, it is amazing to see that God chose the right treatment for each person.
In other words, rather than assuming that mental illness is necessarily caused by spiritual issues and attempting to treat it solely through spiritual means, I believe the best treatment method is to seek God's wisdom by examining the causes of various problems, their solutions, and treatments through this book. (Omitted)

Korea has a particularly high rate of depression and suicide compared to other countries.
Even Christians are not free from these mental illnesses.
But shouldn't Christians who have experienced the thrill of salvation and rebirth be filled with joy rather than depression?
Didn’t God’s word also say, “Rejoice always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16)?
So, in this book, I want to share biblical healing and recovery from mental illness by examining what robs Christians of their joy and how God restores them in the Bible.
And, in opposition to the world's prejudice and false assumption that mental illness is incurable, we seek to deliver a message of hope: that complete healing and freedom are possible in God.
If you are a counselor, pastor, or have a family member or close friend who is struggling with mental health issues, I hope you will find this book helpful.
