Description
Book Introduction
Published in accordance with the 'Agahae' liturgical calendar for 2026, 'The Light Has Risen (Matthew 4:16)' is the first collection of meditations in the series 'Meet the Lord in the Sunday Gospel'. It is a book that guides you to stay closer to the Lord and welcome each 'new day' through gospel meditation and prayer every week in 2026.

The Future Pastoral Research Institute, which treasures the joy of the Gospel and the mission and value of proclaiming the Gospel, has been providing "Exciting Gospel Meditation" to subscribers every month since 2005.
Father Kim Sang-in (Philip), who has been serving as the director of the Future Pastoral Research Institute since the end of 2019 and has been providing gospel meditations to members, has compiled the “harm” section of the meditations and prayers he has shared with members over the past six years into a book titled “The Light Has Risen.”

This book is based on the original text of the 『Exciting Gospel Meditation』 published monthly, but it has been compiled into ‘short but profound meditations’ and ‘prayer texts that turn the heart toward the Lord’ by condensing only the key points from the vast volume.
In particular, this book does not stop at broadening our understanding of the Lord's word, but opens the way to a personal encounter with God through meditation and direct prayer before that word.
Through this, readers will be able to continue the grace contained in the Gospel throughout their lives throughout the week and renew their path as believers living by the Word and prayer.

Into the book
As many of us know from experience, one of the properties of love is to want to become like the object of our love.
Love contains a strong energy that seeks to accept the situation and circumstances of the person you love, understand his or her heart, and be with him or her.
The meaning of the Lord's birth can be seen as the fact that He became human to live with people who are living in difficult and challenging situations.
[…]
As we reflect on the meaning of Christmas, we must listen to the voices of the poor, truly connect with them, and discover Jesus groaning in their suffering.
--- p.36

Our prayers and faith may be inadequate, but there is surely someone who listens to them.
There is surely someone who knows our pain and sorrow, who sighs endlessly and comforts us even when we struggle with unspeakable hardships and find it difficult to pray.
Because of Him, we can live, laugh, and be happy.
He is the 'God' we love most.
--- p.61

What we who follow Jesus must clearly have is a firm belief that 'Jesus is the one who can do it.'
The Lord asks us to have such firm faith in Him, and through that faith He will surely show us His wonderful works.
--- p.133

The Psalmist tells us clearly:
“In my distress I called to the Lord; he answered me and brought me out into a spacious place” (Psalm 118:5).
The Lord hears the cries of His beloved children in their suffering and gives us His best.
Let us entrust our whole hearts to such a Lord and place our hope only in Him.
--- p.211

Dear Lord, we sincerely thank you for always being with us.
But Lord, even though I thought in my head that You were there, there were times when I doubted and relied only on my own judgment.
Lord, no matter how hard we try, we must confess that without you we are nothing.
Lord, give courage and strength to our lacking faith and hearts.
So, please let me never leave you again, Lord, and let me experience and testify that the strength you give me is enough.
Through Christ our Lord.
amen!
--- p.212

Dear Lord, thank you for always being with us.
Lord, we thank you for listening to our smallest voices and remembering our smallest wishes.
Lord, we thank you for being on our side more than anyone else, giving us comfort and courage, especially when we call out to you in our suffering, saying, “Here I am” (Isaiah 58:9).
Lord, we firmly believe that you alone are the Lord who can save us on this journey of life that you walk with us.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ.
amen!
--- p.254

The Lord does not simply force us to suffer.
The Lord knows very well how great the suffering is because He carried His cross first and walked that path before us.
So, you want to always be with us as we walk the path of the cross in suffering.
Because the Lord does not want us to suffer in the pain of carrying the cross without Him.
Rather, He wants us to call upon His name with all our might and pray for the strength to walk this path with Him to the end.
The Lord knows that we call on his name and that we put our hope in his name.
And he knows very well that the life of abandoning oneself and carrying the cross is very difficult and painful.
However, the Lord assures us that if we always invite the Lord into our lives and stay with Him, that life will be a blessed life, a life of hope for salvation.
--- pp.270-271

Lord of Courage, we thank you for always giving us your comfort and strength.
Lord, you do not want us to seek you by just calling on your name.
Lord, we seek you only in times of need, and sometimes we thank your name when our will is done.
Lord, transform our proud and selfish hearts into your gentle and humble heart.
So, may I always receive with a grateful heart all that you give me, and may I become a person who believes only in you and bears fruit according to your will.
--- p.308

Publisher's Review
The title of this Gospel meditation is “And a Light Has Come” (Matthew 4:16).
As the Gospel of Matthew mentions in chapter 9 of the prophecy of Isaiah, “The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light; on those sitting in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:1; see also Matthew 4:16), I wanted to begin this collection of Gospel meditations with a word of hope that even if our lives are in the darkness and shadow of death, there is the Lord who comes as a “great light.”

In this collection of meditations, I pray that you will surely meet our Lord, who comes to you as light through the Sunday Gospel, and be filled with the love He gives you.

A short but deep meditation, leading to prayer.
Into the 'Time of Grace'!

In the midst of our busy daily lives, it is not easy to deeply engrave the Sunday Gospel and live our daily lives responding with meditation and prayer.
This book offers an opportunity for those who long to reflect on their lives and fill their inner selves with the Lord's Word, even amidst their busy schedules, to pause for a moment in their busy lives and converse with the Lord through short but profound meditations and heart-opening prayers.
Each week, the devotional and prayer "Let's Pray Together" that unpacks the essence of the Sunday Gospel will deepen your faith and fill even the smallest moments of your daily life with moments of grace.
By reading this book, which includes key Bible verses from the weekly Gospel, meditations that lead you deeper into the world of meditation, and prayers that turn your heart toward the Lord, you will not only have a time of grace where you can experience and incorporate the Sunday Gospel into your daily life, but through this, you will also be able to make each day a life of "hope" given by the Lord.

The Lord who comes as ‘light’
A book that will always guide you along!

For many believers, the 'Gospel' is like a 'lamp' that helps them walk through difficult times and difficulties without avoiding them, and that holds them close to the Lord when they feel like they are turning away from Him.
Moreover, this word is like a 'light' that guides me to find strength only through the word of the Lord even in many situations that weigh me down.
In this book, the author says that in order to escape the darkness of difficult and challenging situations and hardships we face in our daily lives, we must hold on to the 'Word'.

In order to welcome the Lord who has come as light through the dark moments, we must call on the Lord's name even in the darkness and hold fast to the words He gives us.
I believe that the faith in resurrection is the greatest gift the Lord gives to those who so persistently rely on and hope in Him and entrust their entire lives to Him.
“Lord, help me to hold fast to your word on this difficult and arduous journey of life, to place my hope only in your word and to follow you.”
- From the text

Through meditation on the living words of the Lord and prayer, we will experience the Lord deeply and through this, we will meet the Lord who comes to us as 'light' and gain the strength to live our daily lives.
