I'm learning to pray
Description
Book Introduction
“Prayer is not a duty, but a privilege.” Following the prayer the Lord taught us Dancing, crying and laughing in prayer, Enjoy the kingdom of God here and now. When I said, “I’m learning to pray,” the reply I got was, “Is prayer so difficult that I have to learn it?” The counter-question was that perhaps prayer is something that bursts out instinctively, like a scream. That could be the case. So why didn't Jesus simply tell us to pour out our hearts or honestly say what we want? Instead, he gave us a detailed explanation, using the example of what we commonly call the "Lord's Prayer." What was so profound about it that he insisted on praying it that way? The Lord's Prayer is a prayer that changes our thoughts. Why have I tried so many different ways to pray, only to fail so often? Perhaps it's because I've only been reciting empty words, leaving the core intact. Jesus tells us to change the essence of our prayers. It gives detailed guidance on how to change your prayer thoughts. When our thoughts about prayer change, prayers flow out naturally and eventually moisten our daily lives. As your prayers change and your daily life changes accordingly, the trajectory of your life will also change. It's like if you turn the rudder of a large ship just a little bit, the ship will gradually head in a different direction. No matter how hard the propeller right in front of the rudder turns, it cannot deviate even slightly from its original trajectory without the rudder's correction. On the contrary, the more you pray, the stronger your original desire becomes. Changing your prayer mindset can have a huge impact on your life. Only then does prayer become a privilege enjoyed only by Christians. To this end, 『Learning to Pray』 unravels the thoughts Jesus contained in the Lord's Prayer one by one. If we put on top of that the stereotypes and habits about prayer that have permeated us, it becomes clear at a glance where things are wrong. If you read the author's prayers and the prayers of those who studied prayer through this book together and practice prayer, your prayers will naturally change. I even wrote down the changing prayers directly in the book. You can also write down your prayers while reading the book again in six months or a year. It would be great to see the prayers that change with the times and see how you change accordingly. In this way, we dance, cry, and laugh in prayer, becoming citizens of the kingdom of God. |

Example of a prayer offered in the Lord's Prayer
Learn the Lord's Prayer while praying together
Into the book
The power to break through the pressures and tensions of the world and find peace comes from the prayer Jesus taught us.
In reality, it is not that we memorize the Lord's Prayer and offer it to God; rather, the Lord's Prayer shapes us and makes us offer ourselves to God.
--- p.63
Even using chopsticks requires learning to do it properly, but it is arrogant to think that you can instinctively pray the prayer taught by the Lord.
Jesus' prayer must be learned.
To learn that prayer, you must first secure time for prayer and go into your room.
Nothing is more important than securing time.
Some people say, “I always pray.”
But this is a statement made without knowing what prayer is.
Just because the concept of God floats around in the fringes of my consciousness doesn't mean it's prayer.
--- p.93
Some people talk about a very abstract 'we'.
We speak of the universal church and Christians, but there are times when there is no 'us' that touches our skin.
However, the 'we' in the Lord's Prayer are not universal and cosmic Christians, but people who bump into each other in life and fight with each other.
They know each other's circumstances well.
Jesus taught us that this 'us' should come together and confess God.
In doing this, we can pray beyond the few people in our own small community and call the larger community "us."
--- p.131
There is no reason why God must hear our prayers.
Moreover, our prayers are usually so trivial that God, who rules and guides the entire universe, does not necessarily need to listen to them.
Who are we to pray to "God in heaven," and why should He listen to our insignificant prayers? Because He is our Father.
--- p.136~137
We take too lightly the first phrase of our prayer, “Our Father in heaven.”
When we pray with the words “Our Father in heaven,” the door to prayer begins to open.
When we pray, “Our Father in heaven,” we enter into the true spirit of prayer.
--- p.148
The more deeply we love God and our neighbors, the more desperately we need the Kingdom of God.
If you only think about your own body and your own life, as long as you are not sick and doing well, the Kingdom of God will not come into your sight.
Unfortunately, this is our nature.
When you are sick, you feel as if the whole world is sick, but when you are okay, the world becomes a place worth living in.
This is how shallow we are.
--- p.240
We often think that God's will in heaven has already been decided and that we just need to wait for God to work.
But this Bible verse says that when we pray according to God's will on earth, God in heaven works.
It is expressed as if the earth is moving the sky.
This is the relationship between heaven and earth that the Bible speaks of.
--- p.253
The short words “daily bread” contain the physical, economic, and spiritual survival methods of the people of the Kingdom of God.
This is a confession that even the physical life we take for granted is alive today because God cares for it, that the foundation of our economic life, which we live on today, is also provided by God, and that our emptiness and spiritual longing are also filled only by God.
In this way, we live completely dependent on God.
--- p.307
Yet we do not pray this prayer 'every day'.
Why? Because the arrogant notion that we can survive a day, a week, or even longer without God has crept into us.
We delude ourselves into thinking that we can live off of the money we've earned, the safe home we have, and the success we've built.
But the reality is different.
God faithfully bestows His boundless mercy and compassion day after day, and thanks to Him we are alive.
The prayer for our daily bread to be given 'today' is a great confession of faith to trust God completely every moment of every day.
--- p.311
How pitiful we are.
Each person lives and sees the world from their own perspective.
They interpret everything in their own way, act selfishly, and yet think they have no problem and are always the victim.
Even if you pretend to be smart and understand everything, you are actually just a know-it-all.
But when we begin to see things from God's perspective, we begin to see how weak and helpless we are in our sins, how easily we hurt one another.
But we don't have the ability to correct it.
--- p.354
If we forget the spiritual battlefield that tempts us and subdues us to evil, we will not even notice when the evil one has infiltrated us deeply.
As a result, those in power in the air have secretly infiltrated the Korean church and Christians, spreading worldly values and shameful behavior.
Yet, we do not pray to be saved from temptation or from evil.
They become so insensitive that they neither resist evil nor even think about it.
On the contrary, they are eager to rationalize it.
--- p.412
There are many things in life that can be discouraging and difficult.
There are many times when I am so tired that I can't even pray.
Yet, the reason we come before the Lord in prayer is because we know that what we are experiencing now will only last for a short time and then disappear.
Because we know that eternal things exist separately.
So we live here and now, boldly praying, “Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.”
--- p.431
People think that prayer doesn't change anything.
“Do people change just because they pray? Does a church become new just because they pray?”
Moreover, it is said that prayer is useless and useless when it comes to changing the world.
But the prayer they offered was not the Lord's Prayer.
The Lord's Prayer changes people.
The Lord's Prayer revives the church and establishes it as an outpost for the movement of the Kingdom of God.
The Lord's Prayer has the power to restore a broken and wounded world.
--- p.453
The Lord's Prayer is not just a prayer to be memorized, but a prayer that follows the ideas of the Lord's Prayer and is a prayer that each of us prays in our own language.
It is also a prayer that begins with God and is offered with thought.
And finally, it is a prayer that receives God as a reward.

Publisher's Review
I am learning about the kingdom of God.
"Learning to Pray" is a revised and expanded edition of "The Lord's Prayer Lost by the Korean Church" published 11 years ago.
The author wrote the following at the end of the preface to the first edition:
“I pray that when this book is republished someday, it will be renamed to its original title, “The Lord’s Prayer – The Prayer of the People of the Kingdom of God,” rather than this provocative and offensive title.” That wish has come true at a time when the world has changed.
However, if the first edition was closer to raising issues and raising concerns, the revised and expanded edition required a more sophisticated and friendly approach, as it required Korean church members to actually hold on to the cycle and 'innovate' their own prayers.
This reorganization was helped by the seminars held over the past ten years since the first edition.
The result of reflecting the vivid voices and needs of the church scene was finally born as a book titled "Learning to Pray."

right.
The mountains and rivers have changed.
There was a time when bold criticism was needed to bring the Korean church back to the Lord's Prayer.
But now is the time when more nuanced guidance and guidance are more effective.
So, 『Learning to Pray』 was designed to help you change your ‘thoughts about praying’ first, and then practice prayer based on those thoughts.
The Lord's Prayer is explained in detail, verse by verse, to convey Jesus' intentions contained within it.
And it tells us what kind of prayer to offer in accordance with that, and shows us an example of an actual prayer.
The sample prayers include not only the author's own prayers but also prayers actually written by students who participated in the "Lord's Prayer and Spiritual Training" course, which will be of great help to readers in writing their own prayers.
The pages where readers write their prayers can be rewritten at different times, allowing them to directly observe changes in their prayers.
As various devices were planted here and there, the revised and expanded edition was completely different from the first edition, from the title to the structure.
How will readers react to this change? The key question is whether they will accept it not as a sermon they simply sit and listen to, but as a guide that truly changes their own prayers.
From prayer to exercise
But 『Learning to Pray』 doesn't stop there.
The reader's activity that the book expects goes a little further.
Although I have emphasized its potential since its first edition, at a time when the Korean church was shouting that it had lost the Lord's Prayer and needed to find it again, it seemed like a dream that was difficult to hope would ever come true.
But now that the individual reader has been meticulously designed to actually change his or her prayers, it has become an unavoidable goal.
“When you know that the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours forever, and you believe and follow that truth, it comes to you in action, in a transformed life.
We are the people of that country.
So it can't be ordinary.
Because the Father we believe in and follow is extraordinary.
When we believe in and follow the extraordinary One, there is no way we can help but live differently” (p. 445).
Prayer that follows the Lord's Prayer does not stop at prayer, but leads to action, and that action spreads into life.
And the life that has changed in this way does not remain alone, but expands into a movement that brings together many people.
Therefore, it is significant that the title of the concluding chapter of the last 10 chapters is “The Movement of the Kingdom of God.”
At that time, the title of this book was reread from “Learning to Pray” to “Learning the Kingdom of God.”
