Stories of the 100 Most Famous Mountains Selected by the Korea Forest Service
Description
Book Introduction
Long ago, Liu Yushi of the Tang Dynasty said in his Nushilmyeong (陋室銘), “A mountain is not famous because it is high, but because it has immortals in it. A water is not famous because it is deep, but because it has dragons in it.”
But how could it be that I haven't encountered any immortals even after climbing one of Korea's 100 most famous mountains, as selected by the Korea Forest Service? Yet, there are also humble mountains, which, just when they seem like they're mountains, suddenly slash their height and descend into the hills, or, as the Book of Changes and the Hymn of Humility suggest, "conceal themselves underground."
In that case, who would know that there is a famous mountain there and try to climb it?
And what's more, how could we recognize the old woman sitting outside the gate of Gayasan Mountain with a handful of wild vegetables, or the hikers smiling and offering each other a cup of warm tea and a piece of fruit on the mountaintop, pretending to be immortals?
So, if you wash your eyes with the mountain's color and see it anew, how could there not be immortals in this scenery that I have given birth to, raised, and harvested according to my nature and season, including all kinds of microscopic creatures, the sounds of nameless birds, rocks, dead trees, green mountains and green waters, waterfalls, reservoirs, and even the sea? Why would you say that this is not a famous mountain?
I dedicate this humble piece to those mountains who willingly lowered themselves and offered their shoulders to me without any conditions.

Publisher's Review
The many people I met while hiking, countless stairs, winding paths, trees like bonsai, rocks of various shapes, an old tree that had been a companion to the mountain for eons and was still holding on to its last pride, a herd of pigs that suddenly appeared, a friendly deer couple(?), badgers, vipers, a pack of ferocious wild dogs, two mountain rabbits staring straight at me with their black eyes, the sun rising blazingly between the trees at dawn, the rough waves and the dark blue sea, the mystery of nature that changes with the seasons, all of it was hope and freedom.
I wanted to see, hear, feel, sweat, climb to the top, and enjoy freedom to my heart's content, without processing, adding, or subtracting even a single particle of dust.
Whether it's good weather or bad weather, I wanted to enjoy it together while adapting to nature.
The physical pain was much: a bloody face from collapsing on an icy winter trail, a wounded forehead, countless bruised shins, and broken fingers. But how could it compare to the humility I learned and acquired from the great teacher that is nature?
George Mallory (1886-1924), a famous British mountaineer, was asked by people, “Why do you climb mountains?” and he left behind the famous quote, “Because it’s there.” That is, “I climb mountains because they are there.” He died on a mountain.
The mountain asked the author.
I wanted to learn humility, consideration, and tolerance.
