Inland roads of Korea
Inland roads of Korea
Description
Book Introduction
Across Yeongnam and Honam, in history
Walking through our beautiful mountains and rivers.

The response from travel readers to the "South Korea Trail," which walks around the entire map of South Korea excluding islands, was enthusiastic.
The publisher was surprised.
Perhaps it was because those who were hungry for trekking, with overseas travel blocked by the coronavirus, read “The Trail of Korea” and followed its lead.
Although I later learned from readers that 『The Trail Around the Republic of Korea』 did not garner a large response simply due to the aftermath of the coronavirus.
Trekker Kang Shin-gil's writings capture the hardships of travel and the gentle emotions that only those who have truly walked can experience, and this is why many readers deeply sympathize with him.
『Inland Roads of the Republic of Korea』, which can be considered the sequel to 『Roads around the Republic of Korea』, was completed after four years.
Despite the passage of time, author Kang Shin-gil, who has maintained his strength through his own training, completed this book by trekking along the Samnam Trail and Yeongnam Trail, which can be considered the representative inland trails of South Korea.

Into the book
This book presents the outstanding natural scenery of the mountains and fields hidden throughout the inland, the fresh appearances of rural areas and mountain villages, and the heartwarming stories of these areas in the form of stories rich in local color.
It also contains the simple stories of local residents related to legends passed down from generation to generation.

After seeing the three-story pagoda, return to the village road and walk along National Road No. 13, passing the Moonlight Hanok Village.
If you exit to the left from Sinwol Village, you will pass Nuritjae (Norujae) which leads to Wolchulsan Mountain in Yeongam.
This is the peak road at the foot of Wolchulsan Mountain, which borders Gangjin and Yeongam.
The narrow, gentle mountain path is heavily forested and covered with fallen leaves and weeds.
The road is dug up in places, and the loose dirt hasn't dried yet, so I find myself stiffening without realizing it.

--- p.63

The narrow Jeongancheon River runs long through the northern part of Gongju City.
The clear, clean water and the newly sprouted wild grasses decorated the embankment with a light green color, and the branches of the weeping willows along the river, which were too young to bend, were also beginning to dress in light green.
The well-groomed walking path welcomes spring with a tranquil and cozy atmosphere, with the leaves starting to sprout, the green grass along the roadside, and the clear water of the stream.

--- p.134

Along the village road, the golden pheasant flowers were hanging long, as if to remind us of autumn, and they were showing off their golden colors to their fullest, and the countless tangerine berries hanging from the clustered tangerine trees were telling us that autumn, the harvest season with its yellow ripening, was fast approaching.

--- p.215

The pain in my body that started again yesterday continued today.
The pain on the outside of my right calf continued for 2-3 hours and gradually got worse.
It's nothing new as it's a pain I've always experienced, but it's an area that interferes with trekking along with my ankles.
A fierce debate arises between the mental imperative to overcome this level and the physical imperative to reduce pain.
The thought that I still had to walk more and the thought that I should stop walking today were intertwined.
Now it was a victory for the flesh.

--- p.254

Oh my, I feel so miserable.
The situation arose where we had to get back off the long, winding National Route 3 and return to the village road that connects the villages.
Letting out a sigh from the depths of my heart, I left the national highway and entered Mungyeong City again in the direction of Mungyeong City Hall.

Publisher's Review
Finding the path and culture, with the leisurely pace of a 15-year trekker.

Samnam-gil and Yeongnam-gil are already roads of history.
This is the road that scholars who looked to the past walked toward the capital city with the hope of passing the civil service examination.
Those steps, those steps piled up to become the path we have today.
But I couldn't just walk along that path.
This is because some roads have disappeared or been replaced through urban development and new road construction.
Whenever the author encounters such a reality, he relies on the map to find a new path with some meaning, and completes the Samnam-gil and Yeongnam-gil trails.
The author marked the path he took on a map and recorded it in this book.
This process can be said to be the fate of those who walk the path.
Therefore, this book contains the process of creating a new path while following the path already paved by predecessors.
Furthermore, we expand the meaning of trekking by remembering and exploring the culture and history contained along the way.
It's not just about walking, it's about finding history on the road.

Samnam-gil, the aesthetics of curves filled with stories

The beginning of the Samnam Road begins in Haenam and Gangjin, where Dasan Jeong Yak-yong lived.
The secluded path, which offers a panoramic view of the beautiful Dadohae scenery, is filled with a sense of comfort that cannot be found in the city.
This road is the road to Seoul to see the past, and it is also the road that Dasan took to be punished and exiled.
There is no place without a story wherever you go, and the breathtaking scenery that corresponds to that story leaves you in awe.
Starting from the southernmost village of Haenam in South Jeolla Province, the Samnam-daero-Samnam-gil trail, which runs through Gangjin-gun, Yeongam-gun, Naju-si, Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Jangseong-gun, passes through Jeongeup-si, Wanju-gun, and Iksan-si in North Jeolla Province, Nonsan-si, Gongju-si, and Cheonan-si in South Chungcheong Province, and finally reaches Hanyang, the capital city of Seoul, through Pyeongtaek-si, Osan-si, Suwon-si, and Uiwang-si in Gyeonggi Province.

In search of the old road behind the myth of Yeongnam-gil and Gyeongbu Expressway

Following Samnam-gil, Uiju-gil, and Gyeongheung-gil, this was one of the four major roads of Joseon, and many government officials, peddlers, and Confucian scholars traveled along this road. Unfortunately, unlike Samnam-gil, Yeongnam-gil's trajectory has not been clearly left behind.
The author followed the path that was recorded in the records, but in the sections that were not recorded, he followed the path that was shown to him by a senior who had gone on the path before.
Although it remains in the records, sometimes it disappears or is damaged even in those records, and when there is no path, we somehow connect the villages that were previously connected by roads.

A road exists not only as a road, but also clearly within the trajectory that connects villages.
There are several routes to Seoul from the Yeongnam region.
There is the Yeongnam-daero that runs from Busan through Daegu, Mungyeong Saejae, Chungju, and Yongin; there is the Yeongnam-jwa-ro that runs from Busan through Cheongdo, Yeongcheon, and Andong and crosses Jukryeong; and there is the Yeongnam-u-ro that runs through Daegu and Gimcheon and crosses Chupungnyeong.
The longest route is the Yeongnam Uro, which lasts 16 days.
On the other hand, there is a 14-day itinerary for the Yeongnam-daero that crosses Saejae Pass, and the author chooses the Yeongnam-daero.

The path of exploration of the path of the pathfinder is not over.
It doesn't stop.
The author does not hide his excitement as he records the path he must walk.
Trekking has a starting point, but once you reach your destination, another destination appears.
