Description
Book Introduction
The most splendid and cruel of Shakespeare's four major tragedies
The story of an honest soul who falls into the swamp of ambition and is ruined by evil.
A new translation that preserves the lightning-fast flow of the play and the poetic dialogue.

“Life is like a shadow walking, like an actor, playing on stage for a while, getting impatient, and then disappearing.”

Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's four major tragedies, has been published as the 99th volume in Minumsa's World Literature Collection.
The recently published Macbeth is a translation completed through comparative analysis of the British Arden and Riverside editions.
Professor Choi Jong-cheol, who specializes in Shakespeare, was in charge of the translation, and he made every effort to preserve the length and format of the original text.

A lot of care was also put into the editing, actively reflecting the atmosphere of the performance at the time when there was no distinction between acts and scenes.
The act and chapter are simply indicated at the beginning of a new chapter, and the location is explained in the footnotes.
This method began in the third series of Arden editions and is said to be more faithful to Shakespeare's original text.

The three witches prophesy to Macbeth and General Banquo, who are on their way back, that Macbeth will soon ascend to the throne of Scotland and Banquo's descendants will become kings.
Macbeth is greatly shaken by this and joins hands with his greedy wife to plot a plot.
Eventually, King Duncan is murdered on the night he visits Macbeth's castle, and the two princes escape abroad.
Macbeth plots to place blame on the runaway princes and ascends to the throne.
And to get rid of Banco, who also heard the witches' prophecy, an assassin is sent, but only Banco is killed and his son escapes.
After a while, the ghost of Banquo appears at the banquet table of Macbeth, who has become the new king, and Macbeth continues to be tormented by Banquo's ghost.
When even the nobles begin to doubt him, Macbeth goes to the witches and asks them to give him another prophecy.

"Macbeth" is Shakespeare's masterpiece, filled with violent and grand images of storms, darkness, and blood, a dramatic atmosphere that evokes fear and supernatural dread, a fierce portrayal of the pain of conscience, and a dense portrayal of fateful tragedy and human nobility.

Publisher's Review
When the play ends, what remains in our minds is not the repeated murders, but the noble humanity of Macbeth, who suffers as he piles up his evil deeds and tries to suppress the power of his conscience with their weight.
