Book Introduction
A new anthology novel collection themed on "Listening"

A new anthology novel collection, 『Listen』, in which five novelists write together on one topic, has been published by Open Books.
〈Do Anthology〉 is a collection of short stories written by 25 novelists, themed around the verb 〈do〉, which is about five actions we do on a daily basis: walk, ask, see, listen, and know.
The fourth anthology, “Listen,” features Kim Eom-ji, Kim Hye-jin, Baek On-yu, Seo I-je, and Choi Je-hoon.
Kim Eom-ji, who has been building her own unique literary world, depicts what she wants to hear in the place called “Sasong,” amidst the words that should be said between ex-lovers, words that cannot be asked, and words that should be heard.
Kim Hye-jin, who carefully observes the hearts of marginalized people and expresses the inner world of humans with greater sensitivity than anyone else, deals with the distance between the speaker and the listener in “Haruchi’s Words,” which shows the relationship between two women, “Aesil” and “Hyeonseo.”
Baek On-yu's "My Hometown", which portrays not only the main character's life but also the daily lives of those around him in a three-dimensional manner and displays solid writing, depicts the unexpected events that happen to Yeong-ji, who cannot place her heart in the city or her hometown and believes that enduring and persevering is the way to survive, and unfolds how she reacts to the voice she hears inside herself.
Seo Yi-je, who received critical acclaim for his honest self-portrait of contemporary youth, listens to not only the inaudible sounds but also the sounds that are difficult to discern even when heard, in "When I Hear an Explosion," which depicts the emotions of an uncle caring for his runaway high school nephew.
Choi Je-hoon, who creates a unique narrative that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy through “Everyday Fantasy,” tells the story of a magician’s curse on his words in a kingdom and a king who struggles to lift the curse through “An Untold Fairy Tale,” and tells the story of what the voice inside me truly is in this world where too many words are exchanged.

Into the book
What are you looking at? I asked L.

I don't see anything.
L answered.

What do you hear? I ask again.

The sound of the wind.
L said.
--- From "Kim Eom-ji, Sasong"

It was clear what needed to be said and what needed to be heard, but that was not Aeshil's purpose.
She didn't know what she wanted to say or what she wanted to hear from Hyunseo.
--- From "Kim Hye-jin, Haruchi's Words"

Yeongji!

At that moment, a voice like an arrow pierced the spirit world.
Yeongji raised her head as if she had just woken up and looked around.
I couldn't tell whose voice it was or where it came from, but it was someone's affectionate and innocent voice.

--- From "Baek On-yu, My Hometown"

I thought that if I knew what I wanted, or rather, what I was good at, life would be so much easier.
If you did what you really wanted to do, wouldn't you be able to endure and endure some of the difficult times?

--- From "Now, When I Hear the Explosion"

Oh, oh, can you hear me? Of course you can.
Because I'm speaking like this, point by point.
I believe that every word that passes through my lips is being transmitted well to your eardrums.
--- From "Choi Je-hoon, Untold Fairy Tales"

Publisher's Review
Kim Eom-ji, "Song"

I wanted to write the most beautiful sound I could hear.
There was also the thought that I didn't want to hear anything.

Kim Hye-jin, "Haruchi's Words"

In our daily lives, what we listen to is often not just a simple sound, but someone's words, an intimate story. In such cases, "listening" does not end with the simple act of accepting the sound.
Because it includes understanding the other person's feelings, trying to empathize, and even responding appropriately.
In that sense, I came to think that “listening” is never easy.
There may be times when the balance between the speaker and the listener is broken.

Baek On-yu, "My Hometown"

At first, I thought I should write a whimsical and cheerful story about a daughter dealing with her mother's problem of stealing pine mushrooms, but the more I wrote, the more I thought it would be difficult to conclude it appropriately.
So I decided to see it through to the end, and I continued writing the story until Youngji said it was over.
Yeongji is a person who cannot place her heart in the city or her hometown.
I wanted to depict a story about a person who believed that enduring was the only way to survive, but now moves according to the voice within him.

Seo Yije, "When I Hear a Loud Sound"

At some point, I realized that I could no longer hear the crying sound of the child next door who used to cry every day.
I moved.
But strangely enough, that silence wasn't good.
The silence took me somewhere else.
Another crying sound began to be heard.
It felt strange that while we were continuing our quiet and peaceful daily lives, on the other side of the world countless people were dying every day in war.
There seemed to be some connection between the sounds too far away to be heard and the cries that could not be articulated in words.
I wanted to listen to sounds that were not audible, sounds that were not easily discernible even when heard.

Choi Je-hoon, "Untold Fairy Tales"

This novel was conceived from the thought that in a world where countless words are exchanged every day, we may not be able to listen to the voice within us.
