Description
Book Introduction
Learning from the West's Prosperity and the Fall of Totalitarianism
History proves that only those who stand on the 'right side' prosper.

As seen in the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak at the beginning of 2020, which turned into a pandemic, in a world that has become significantly smaller and borders have become meaningless, the 'West' is no longer a concept based on geography or race.
However, just because the human body is equal in the face of disease, that does not mean that the thoughts and values shared by groups of people are equal.
The West is precisely the sum total of a certain type of thought and values, the Western Civilization.

"Why is life so good these days? Why is this wonderful world falling apart?" These are the two mysteries that begin "The Right Side of History" ("Introduction," p. 15).
The answer is in the title.
'Because we stood on the right side of history, the world became a better place to live in, and because of those who abandoned the right side, the world is falling apart.' That right side is Western civilization, with its nearly 3,000-year history, and the group that was destroyed because it abandoned the right side was, in the last century, socialism.

Publisher's Review
Ben Shapiro, the standard-bearer of America's "young conservatives"
-“The essence of Western civilization is ‘purpose in life’ and ‘reason.’”

The Right Side of History (2019) is Ben Shapiro's latest and seventeenth book.
This is the second book to be introduced in a domestic translation, following 『Brain Washed』 (translated by Nam-gyu Lee, Giparang, 2018).

As a leading conservative commentator in the United States, Shapiro, who is active in writing, contributing, and podcasting to a degree that defies his age (born 1984, 36 years old), reaffirms in this book that ‘Jerusalem and Athens’, or ‘Judaism and reason’, are the two pillars that support Western civilization.
The 'purpose' and 'means' that make humans human and enable the survival and prosperity of individuals and communities come from this.

“Western civilization has given people the following four elements essential for human happiness:
The first is individual purpose, which gives us the awareness that life is precious and that we are each born with a unique mission in the universe.
The second is individual capacity, meaning that each of us has the ability to carry out the task.
The third is communal purpose, which means we can act together when needed and change the world in a meaningful way.
And the final concept, communal capacity, is based on the understanding that our system can protect individuals and that we can come together as one when necessary.” (Preface to the Korean edition, p. 10)

We must also not forget the warning that a proper human society cannot be built with only one of the two pillars.

“If we rely too much on religious values, we will face a theocracy.
On the other hand, if we only worship reason, a materialism-based tyranny can be born.”

The first mystery that opens the book has been solved.
'The reason we live so well today is because of Western civilization, which balances ends and means.' If that's the case, the 'West' in Western civilization is just an extra.
Among the countless civilizations that have risen and fallen throughout human history, only Western civilization has maintained the balance between the two pillars of 'end and means' in the most humane way.
Because only this 'civilization', which is the only correct one, is worth protecting (conserving) and must be so.
The right side can only be the right side.
This is why the Korean version is titled 'Right, Right Side'.

Anti-civilization forces of the 21st century
The Left, Scientism, and "Half of the Korean Peninsula"

A second mystery remains.
Why is a world so livable being destroyed? In the last century's war between civilization and anti-civilization, the most prominent forces opposing civilization were the totalitarian powers represented by Stalin, Hitler, and Mao Zedong.
Even if the destruction of those on the left/right side of history was their own doing, what about the suffering that hundreds of millions of people are still suffering because of it?

As modern anti-civilization forces of the 21st century that continue the legacy of fallen totalitarianism, the author cites the left, which has not been able to shake off the old dream of socialism, and the scientism that reduces humans to the level of mere beasts.
Oh, and don't be fooled by far-right totalitarianism disguised as right-wing (e.g., racism or the alt-right)! In the text, and in the preface written especially for Korean readers, the author cautions against the existence of North Korea, "the anti-civilization group on the Korean Peninsula."

“Today, the entire country of North Korea is one giant prison camp.
“In fact, this is not so surprising, because North Korea is simply faithfully inheriting the brilliant legacy of the communist states that existed in the past.” (Chapter 7, “The World Being Remade,” p. 269)

“If we look north of South Korea, we find a country that rejects the very premise of Western civilization.
The people of North Korea, a hellish communist country, have been suffering under the worst dictatorship.
“There is no other case on earth that reveals such a stark contrast in worldviews as South Korea and North Korea.” (Preface to the Korean edition, p. 8)

Could the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic be a wake-up call for those still recovering from the epidemic of totalitarianism and closed societies?
