Let's do it, let's do it, don't regret it

As she enters a new phase of her life, volleyball god Kim Yeon-kyung delivers a powerful message to the world!
What is the right way to achieve your dreams and realize your goals?

A self-improvement essay by Kim Yeon-kyung, the volleyball emperor who became an icon of her time.
Her way of thinking and acting goes beyond 'best' and toward 'perfection'

This is a self-development essay by former volleyball player Kim Yeon-kyung, who retired after leading her team, Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders, to a unified championship (1st place in the regular league + victory in the championship match) on April 8, 2025.
Kim Yeon-kyung brought a splendid end to her career by leading the team, which had been plagued by a 'runner-up jinx' for several seasons, to a championship in her final season before her retirement.
And he won the regular season and championship MVP.
Perhaps Kim Yeon-kyung is the only person in world sports history who has achieved the trifecta of 'retirement', 'championship', and 'MVP' at the same time.
From her first season as a professional athlete to her retirement season after 20 years, what was the driving force that enabled her to maintain her position at the top, and in her final moments, to create the most moving drama that sports can offer? This book vividly captures Kim Yeon-koung's journey to become the world's best volleyball player, her journey through overcoming the hardships of injury and contract turmoil that followed her rise to the top, and her journey today, as she realizes a greater sense of self, transcending the distinction of "excellent athlete" to become a "complete human being."

Kim Yeon-kyung's way of thinking and acting serves as a model for people of all ages, including teenagers and young adults, to grow in the right direction and achieve respected social success.
Moreover, Kim Yeon-kyung's bold choices and execution to grow, change, and establish a unique domain hold value as a strategic case study that can be applied to many organizations seeking innovation and development.
There are many volleyball players with better physical condition and athletic ability than Kim Yeon-kyung.
Yet, what was the secret behind Kim Yeon-koung's ability to create such a gap that she earned the praise of being "one in a billion"? What was the background that made her more than just the world's best striker? What thoughts and mindset gave birth to the "Kim Yeon-koung legend"? Find out in this book, "What I Need to Do for Myself Now."

Into the book
How many athletes have managed to win a championship, win Finals MVP, and earn regular season MVP honors in their planned retirement season? Retirement typically occurs when an athlete's skills decline due to age and other factors, making it nearly impossible for the trifecta of "retirement," "championship," and "MVP" to coincide.
I'm not bragging right now.
I really wanted to say that the story of 'Kim Yeon-kyung' was something we all created together, and that I was simply the main character in that story.
--- From “[Introduction] How to Overcome the Limits of Being Called ‘I’”

I have experienced countless times that there are limits to what I can do for myself, but when I do it for all of us, those limits and barriers disappear.
That's exactly what I wanted to say through this book.
I prepared this book with the hope that many people will realize that if each of us harbors a grander ideal of achieving our goals, fulfilling ourselves, and realizing our dreams, we will have a powerful ally in the form of encouragement and support, providing us with energy.
--- From “[Introduction] How to Overcome the Limits of Being Called ‘I’”

But now I vaguely know.
That whatever actions I take today are the bricks that will build the house of the future.
The future is never separate from today.
The future is the result of today's actions.
While we may not be able to create the perfect future everyone desires, our efforts and sacrifices will in some way shape the future.
--- From "Growing Beings Do Not Know How to Subtract"

Some of the young volleyball players must have been going through the same anxious times I went through.
There was something I wanted to say to that child.
I wanted to tell you that you're not the only one, that everyone goes through difficult times and perseveres, growing little by little...
I have long had the desire to be a good mentor to aspiring volleyball players.
Books were an excellent vehicle for that purpose.
--- From "There are stages in life that must be passed through"

Whether it's exercise, work, or studying, a person who doesn't give up on what he or she has chosen as his or her profession and continues steadily is moving towards perfection in some way.
It is character that drives us to accomplish all of this and to move forward toward ultimate achievement.
And character is like a gift given to those who have steadily and steadily gone through the stages and processes that must be passed through on the journey of life.
--- From "There are stages in life that must be passed through"

So, don't be too impatient when you see someone who is way ahead of you.
Don't be tempted to take shortcuts just because you're falling behind right now.
You won't get far that way.
The best way to reach your destination is to enjoy the time and experiences that accumulate in your body and mind, and to quietly move forward little by little.
In the long run, character is the most useful ability.
--- From "There are stages in life that must be passed through"

To truly enjoy the results, you must value the process.
Those who value the process they are going through now can enjoy satisfaction and happiness through the process as much as the result.
Volleyball candidate Kim Yeon-kyung gave up the sweet rest after mealtimes to focus on individual training not because she was deliberately trying to suffer, but because she was seeking the relief and satisfaction that came with doing so, namely, self-satisfaction.
--- From "The One Person Who Always Watches Over My Efforts and Fighting Spirit"

Publisher's Review
The Virtues of Eternal National Team Captain Kim Yeon-kyung

“She elevates her teammates’ play.
“This is truly a rare leadership.”
_ Lang Ping (former Chinese national team coach)

“Kim Yeon-kyung’s greatest strengths are revealed off the field.
“Performance in the game comes next.”
_ Marcello Abbondanza (professional volleyball team coach)

South Korean society is often characterized by extreme division rather than unity due to the sharp conflicts of political beliefs and the wide gap between classes and generations.
This may be proof of the great diversity in our society.
Even amidst these clashes of ideas, there are those who enjoy universal public support, regardless of camp or generation.
These people are generally given the new word '~god' as a suffix, and they have in common the characteristics of having achieved overwhelming success in a specific field, as well as self-control, impartiality, outstanding character, and good influence.
Representative figures include national MC Yoo Jae-suk and figure skating queen Kim Yuna, and there is a tacit agreement among the public that criticism of them should be avoided as much as possible.

One of the people who has this ‘right to avoid being criticized’ is volleyball player Kim Yeon-kyung.
He has always played passionately and even encouraged his fellow players to the point of being a bit aggressive in every national team match, inspiring and moving the audience.
While playing as the ace of his team, he also showed patriotism and sincerity by attending national team matches almost every day for 16 years, which were also important factors in winning the public's support and encouragement.
Even though a scene of her swearing loudly during a match was broadcast live on TV, she earned the nickname "Bread Sister."

Consistency is what created the compelling and moving story of "Kim Yeon-kyung."

“This is what it means to be the best in the world!”
_British BBC

“A player better than Lionel Messi”
_ Giovanni Guinetti (a renowned coach in European volleyball)

There is a mystery about Kim Yeon-kyung.
The question is how a candidate who was worried about whether he would be able to play volleyball at a higher level was able to rise to the top of the world in a short period of time.

From the time she started playing volleyball in the fourth grade of elementary school until her first year of high school, Kim Yeon-kyung's position was libero, and she mainly played on the bench.
The first reason was that I was short.
Even when I entered high school, I was no taller than 170 centimeters.
The second reason was that he was short but had unusually long limbs, which made his body imbalanced and he couldn't move his body as he pleased.
When I was in my second year of middle school, I was worried that no high school would accept me, so I seriously considered switching to soccer.
A reversal occurred when I became a sophomore in high school.
Thanks to the rapid growth in height, my body balance was finally restored and my athletic ability greatly improved.
From this point on, Kim Yeon-kyung naturally took her place as an attacker.
She quickly gained attention as a 'high school level left-handed attacker'.
He even won the top scorer award at the Asian Championships, where he participated as a member of the youth national team.
How could a defender who was just a bench player just a year ago achieve such a dramatic transformation?

The biggest reason is that Kim Yeon-kyung focused on what she could do.
Not growing tall and having poor physical balance, which led to poor athletic ability, were areas beyond my control.
Instead, he could just train hard and do 'supplementary lessons' on his own when his fellow players were resting.
Since elementary school, he has been diligent in not only defensive training, which is his position, but also offensive training, imagining himself one day hitting a strong spike over the net.
This consistency eventually gave me an opportunity to shine.
After reaching the top, he worked even harder to maintain that position.
No matter which team she was on, Kim Yeon-kyung was recognized by her teammates as the 'hardest working player.'
Moreover, he showed his actions and changed his surroundings.
That's why the team he was a part of was always at the top.
He was always the key to victory, upgrading his fellow players through his sincerity, consistency, and training routine.

What was the secret that kept him at the top until the end of his career?

“Our team played with passion and did really well.
But the opposing team had Kim Yeon-kyung.”
_ Denisa Rogozinnaru (former captain of Germany's Stincabakou / after losing to Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League)

“Kim Yeon-kyung left the Japanese league.

Now we have a chance to win.”
_ Minoru Tatsugawa (former Japanese professional volleyball team coach)

An athlete can be recognized as a top prospect from a young age due to his innate talent and athletic ability, and even after his professional debut, he can demonstrate exceptional skills.
However, it is extremely difficult to maintain such performance until the retirement season.
In the sports world, the aging curve (the phenomenon of athletes' skills declining as they age) is usually considered to begin around the age of thirty.
From then on, various indicators show a downward trend.
What about Kim Yeon-kyung? Of course, Kim Yeon-kyung couldn't avoid the aging curve.
Nevertheless, even at the age of 37, she showed high-level skills in the V-League, where foreign players are dominant, even in her retirement season, not only in scoring (7th) and attack success rate (2nd), but also in serves (7th) and receives (2nd).
Moreover, there were many instances where the game was turned around due to her defense and offense that saved the game at crucial moments.
Based on these performances, Kim Yeon-kyung was selected as one of the Best 7 in her retirement season, and won the regular season MVP and unanimous MVP of the championship match.
How can an athlete approaching his forties in Korean age maintain such skill?

Because the goals and objectives were different.
All athletes in team sports compete for the team's victory.
Personal fame and salary are just the rewards.
But Kim Yeon-kyung looked beyond the goals of team victory and personal honor.
This is the development of Korean women's volleyball.
Kim Yeon-kyung has long held the belief that Korean women's volleyball will prosper only if she does well.
It was for the same reason that he was so passionate about international competitions such as the Olympics and Asian Games as a national representative.
He was willing to take pride in the burden he had borne, and that was the standard by which he measured all his words and actions.

When we think of 'us' beyond 'me', our abilities reach their peak!

“Kim Yeon-kyung is someone who would treat a sanitation worker and the president equally.”
_ Fenerbahce SK staff

“My happiness cannot be complete in the face of the misfortune of others.”
_ Kim Yeon-kyung

Kim Yeon-kyung says this.
“I have experienced countless times that there are limits to what I can do for one person, but when it comes to all of us, limits and barriers disappear.” She says that at some point, the importance of ‘me’ in everything she does began to decrease and the importance of ‘we’ increased, and because she had a new goal of realizing the dreams and hopes of the greater self called ‘we,’ she was able to spur herself on and always make the right choices and judgments.
This is why Kim Yeon-kyung wrote this book.
Although each individual spares no effort today to achieve their own self-satisfaction and dreams, only when we seek to coexist with others and for the greater self, "we," can we obtain the powerful energy of encouragement and support, and get closer to our goals.
Kim Yeon-kyung's thoughts and attitude have actually led her to the top, and they have been the biggest driving force that has allowed her to maintain that position for so long and achieve so much.

Through Kim Yeon-kyung's book, readers will gain a new perspective on the world and a powerful motivation to realize their dreams.
Additionally, you will be able to find answers to the question of how best to achieve what individuals and organizations desire.
