From 'ordinary employee' to 'president'
Former Samsung Electronics President Koh Dong-jin, the 'Galaxy success story'
Answering Samsung employees' questions directly

“This book is now in its own karma,
“This book is for those who want to succeed only through work, not through anything else!”

Former CEO and President Koh Dong-jin, who joined Samsung Electronics as a rank-and-file employee in 1984, held various key positions, including Head of the European Research Center, Head of the Product Planning Team, and Head of the Development Office, leading Samsung Electronics' mobile business to world-class status with differentiated products and services.
Above all, he is evaluated as the main character of the 'Galaxy success story' by being the first in the world to introduce innovative technologies such as foldable smartphones, thereby creating a new era for the Galaxy brand.

But his true strength lies in the hard work and passion hidden behind his flashy profile.
He did not graduate from the so-called 'SKY' and, due to difficult family circumstances, decided to start working right after graduating from school. He is a self-made man who rose through the ranks one by one through his characteristic sincerity, unrivaled passion, and fierce and persistent effort, eventually becoming the president.

This book is a realistic advice and warm encouragement from the author, who started with nothing and ran more diligently, passionately, and fiercely than anyone else toward the clear goal of becoming a CEO, to those who want to succeed only through work, “now, not later,” and “in their own industry, not elsewhere.”
He generously shares the so-called "Law of the Champion," which he learned and practiced at Samsung for 38 years, and which has led to his success, including what work is, why work is done, and how to work.

Into the book
The question of who is responsible is largely an afterthought.
It's belatedly holding someone accountable after the problem has occurred.
But holding those responsible accountable doesn't make what happened disappear.
The important thing is to prevent problems from occurring, that is, risk management.
“Who is the champion?” asks who sees the big picture, anticipates problems, proactively identifies and addresses risks, and sees through to completion to achieve results.

---From "03 Samsung asks, "Who is the champion?""

Creativity doesn't just mean creating something out of nothing.
Creativity at work is about gathering input from relevant people and organizations to suggest a new direction when a turning point or inflection point is needed to achieve a certain outcome.
There is no use in sitting at a desk and just 'imagining'.
We need voices from the field to change direction.
Here comes the first secret of creativity: the 'foot'.
The creativity of a good worker comes from the ‘feet’, not the ‘head’.
This means that when you go out and see, hear, and analyze the field yourself, you can find groundbreaking solutions that you wouldn't have thought of when you were just sitting in the office, racking your brain.

---From "04 The Secret of Creativity: 'Put' and 'Clue'"

I believe that 'work-life balance' is absolutely necessary.
However, my definition of work-life balance is a little different from the usual definition.
For me, work-life balance means investing both work and life in a balanced way to achieve your desired goals.
In other words, my work-life balance was thinking about, pursuing, and working toward my goals not only at work but also at home, not only while working but also when not working.
Actually, I find it a bit odd to distinguish between 'work' and 'life'.
We work to live and we work to live.
Work and life are not separate entities that can be considered separately, but rather a set that must always go together.

---From "05 How far will we go"

Since joining Samsung in 1984, I have never felt that things were difficult during my time as an employee and then as an executive.
It's not because I have outstanding abilities or because I started working in a powerful department.
Every time something comes up, I think, 'Oh, this is a little uncomfortable.
But I just broke through it, thinking, 'It will pass.'
I don't often say "I'm anxious."
Instead, say, “I feel uncomfortable.”
Anxiety is a vague emotion, but discomfort is a problem that can be improved.
It's just a little uncomfortable, and it can get better with effort, but I think that if you're anxious and struggling, it'll be difficult to find a solution.

---From "09 Do not confuse 'discomfort' with 'anxiety'"

Knowledge can be accumulated with effort and time, but caring is a separate matter.
Since these are essential virtues for a leader, we chose someone who is honest and considerate rather than someone who is good at their job.
It is true that one or two smart people can change the world.
But it is not one or two people who lead a large organization, but a considerate leader.
In other words, it can be said that smart people lead work, but considerate people lead organizations.

---From "18 Two Ways to Turn 'Enemies' into 'Allies'"

I think that a lifetime job depends on how you define it.
Please think about whether a lifelong job is something you work at until retirement, or something you work at until you can fully develop your abilities and dreams.
And more importantly, we need to think of a ‘lifelong career’ rather than a ‘lifelong job.’
The term "lifetime employment" sounded to me like something people would say if they lost control of their company.
What I'm saying is that if I have the skills and value to the company, that is, if I have the skills and ability, there's no need to be tied down by the term "lifetime employment."
I will be able to continue my ‘lifelong career’ based on my abilities and skills.

Among “Lifelong Careers”

He says.

“As an undergraduate graduate, I was hired at a company filled with graduates from prestigious universities, overseas study abroad programs, and PhDs. All I could do was approach my work with a sense of urgency and sincerity.”

This book is a realistic advice and warm encouragement from the author, who started with nothing and ran more diligently, passionately, and fiercely than anyone else toward the clear goal of becoming a "president", to those who want to succeed only through work, "now, not later," "in their own industry, not elsewhere."

Beyond "growth" to "success"! Beyond "best" to "greatest!"
Champion's Law 33

From a rank-and-file employee to the CEO, to being called the Galaxy success story, the journey was certainly not easy.
He never took being the best for granted, always planned thoroughly and worked hard.
However, during his time as a new employee at the research institute, he received a harsh evaluation from his superiors, saying that he "did not live up to expectations" due to his poor language skills. In 2006, he lost the hearing in his left ear, facing the biggest crisis in his life, not just work.
Above all, the discontinuation of the Galaxy Note 7 in 2016 was a huge crisis that completely shook up all the efforts and achievements made so far.

However, rather than giving up helplessly in the face of a crisis, he was a person who knew how to fight to turn a crisis into an opportunity.
After a cold reprimand from his boss, he canceled all his weekday appointments and devoted himself to studying English. After much effort, he was promoted to assistant manager after only three and a half years at the company.
It was about 6 months faster than my peers.
Although his wife advised him to retire due to hearing loss, he used it as an opportunity to build his 'mental muscles' and has persevered through any difficulties he has faced since then with his strong mental muscles.
During the Note 7 discontinuation incident, he went so far as to say, "I will transparently analyze the cause, take responsibility, and leave the company," and devoted himself to the resolution, successfully overcoming a problem that was a matter of life and death for not only himself but also the company.

Drawing on his vivid experience of overcoming crises and forging his own path, he advises, “If you want to succeed in your work, aim to become a champion.”

“I believe that anyone who wants to be successful in their work should aim to be a champion.
A champion is someone who sees the big picture from start to finish.
And he is a person who leads the ‘growth of the company’ through ‘his own growth.’
At the same time, he is also a person who uses ‘company development’ as a driving force for ‘personal development.’
That is, coexistence with the company.” - From “03 Samsung asks, “Who is the champion?”

“A standard guide for office workers that explains the essence of work!”
- Kwon Oh-hyun (Advisor and former Chairman of Samsung Electronics, author of "Super Gap")

In these days when people dream of turning their lives around through stocks, coins, and financial investment, paradoxically, being good at 'work' is the most powerful and important essence of success.
In a situation where the number of young people pursuing a life of moderate work and moderate enjoyment is increasing, his story of how to achieve success in the basics of work and the reality of the workplace serves as a sharp warning to the false illusions about work, life, and success.

“Usually when we think of effort, words like ‘hard work’ and ‘sincerity’ come to mind.
Of course, these are important factors.
But 'best' is just a process.
For your efforts to shine, they must produce results.
In other words, efforts are not in vain only when they are proven to be the ‘best’ results.” - From “07 ‘Best’ is just a process, prove it with ‘the best’”

However, this book is by no means a one-way book that preaches a one-way theory of success.
In fact, the author has been known as the ‘communication king’ at Samsung Electronics for a long time.
This is because we have emphasized the importance of an organizational culture that allows for horizontal communication and have actively encouraged free discussion among executives and employees about current company issues.
Also, since I was working as the head of the wireless development lab, I have been able to freely communicate with employees regardless of their position through Samsung's internal communication network and email.

This book is the result of that communication, filled with sharp yet useful advice and thoughtful encouragement that reflects respect and affection for working people.
Furthermore, 'The Law of Champions', which is based on the know-how that the author personally acquired and practiced, is full of life and realism, like a fluttering fish.
This is why this book is “a must-read for office workers,” as recommended by Kwon Oh-hyun, a Samsung Electronics advisor and former chairman and author of the best-selling book “Super Gap.”

The driving force of growth, the tool for success, the only weapon… … .
What does work mean to you?

The title of this book, “What is Work?” is also a question the author addresses to all working people in the world, especially office workers.
Because if you clearly know ‘what’ it is, you can clearly know ‘how’ to do it.

"What does work mean to you? For some, it's simply a means of earning a living. For others, it's a tool for growth and success.
The definition of work will vary from person to person.
There is no right answer.
You just have to find your own answer and move forward with that answer.
For me, work was both a path to success and a goal in itself.

From the moment I joined the company, my goal was to become the CEO.
The only secret to my success as someone who had nothing was 'work', and I only wanted to succeed through work.
“It was natural that the highest position, the president, was the goal.” - From “Prologue”

For those who struggle to overcome their given circumstances and conditions rather than being discouraged by them, and for those who seek success in their "here and now" work, this book is undoubtedly a practical and practical guide.
