Into the book
The Book of Job is a book of wisdom in poetic form.
Although it is often said that the theme of the Book of Job is to explain the causes of suffering, the book of Job does not actually state the reasons why good people suffer.
Rather, it challenges the attitude that judges life by simple cause-and-effect relationships such as piety and prosperity, sin and punishment.
And it leads us to trust in God's sovereignty and wisdom even in the midst of suffering for unknown reasons.
--- p.16 From the Book of Job
The Psalms are both a song of praise and a prayer to God, and they are also the Word of God.
Poetry has a unique power that prose does not have.
It awakens the emotions, stimulates the imagination, and appeals not only to the intellect but to the whole person.
Worship of God must be built on solid theology.
But on the other hand, it has to contain more than that.
That's exactly what poetry does.
--- p.26 From Psalm 1
The poems of the Psalms can be broadly divided into three types according to their content, mood, structure, and expression.
The three types of poetry reflect the flow of orientation-disorientation-re-orientation that we experience.
Descriptive praise poems show the "normal" times when everything flows peacefully, lament poems reveal the "abnormal" reality of losing direction in the midst of tribulation and the hope that this is not the end, and acknowledgment poems vividly convey the "realignment" that God restores.
--- p.36 From Psalm 2
Even in times of darkness, poets look forward to the eternal kingship and rule of God.
We look back on His salvation history and offer thanks and praise.
Although there is no sign of the promise being fulfilled, we live by faith, looking to the One who promised.
We are invited to live by relying on God's promises rather than on visible realities.
--- p.46 From Psalm 3
Jesus is the representative poet who personally sang the psalms, and he is the supreme poet with perfect righteousness.
Jesus personally experienced the pain, the injustice, the gratitude, and the joy experienced by the psalmists.
Jesus knows well the despair of being abandoned by God and the sighs that burst forth when attacked by the enemy.
So when we read the Psalms and discover our own experiences and emotions, we can bring whatever pain and difficulty we have to Jesus.
--- p.56 From Psalm 4
Proverbs is a book of wisdom that teaches God's covenant people how to live.
While the Pentateuch and the Prophets proclaim God's covenant and prophecy, Proverbs contains the wisdom and principles of life that pious people discovered within God's created order.
Therefore, when reading Proverbs, we must remember that these records are general rules for life.
--- p.66 From "Proverbs"
The song sings of the passionate and pure love between a man and a woman.
But that love does not remain merely human love; it reveals the love between Jesus, the groom, and the church, the bride.
We often fail in love, but Jesus gave himself for his worthless bride and perfected perfect love through the cross and resurrection.
In Him we live as a bride waiting for the wedding feast.
