Book Introduction
If my soul wants to look only to God,
Where should I start my efforts?

There are people who do not wear rosary rings or carry a Bible, yet they feel the fragrance of Christ in their daily lives.
Perhaps it is because God is present in the midst of their lives.
The souls of these people are always turned towards God as naturally as breathing.
So, when I see people like this, I want to learn how to always live toward God.

One of these people who devoted their entire lives to God was Saint John of the Cross.
Saint Teresa of Jesus led the reform movement of the Carmelite Order, and despite suffering and persecution, she left behind great writings and was declared a Doctor of the Church.
He is particularly famous for leaving behind many moral and mystical teachings.
This collection of wise sayings, which compiles advice from adults, has been completely revised and published after 13 years.

The Spiritual Advice of Saint John of the Cross is a book that contains the spirituality of Saint John of the Cross. It is a compilation of all of the saint's writings, the words he spoke while guiding the monks of the Reformed Carmelite Order, the exhortations he left behind in his own handwriting, and especially the words recorded during the spiritual conversations he had while visiting various monasteries.
In this book, we encounter St. John of the Cross's stern, yet sometimes sincere and warm advice on how and where to begin so that our souls can look only to God.

Into the book
Wealth itself is not necessarily the cause of sin.
But people easily become obsessed with such things and become unfaithful to God.
The wise man said that since infidelity is a sin, the rich cannot avoid sin.
--- p.14

He who loves creatures with inordinate love becomes a lowly being, like the creatures he loves.
Maybe even lower than that.
Because love not only makes the beloved similar to the object of love, but also makes him subordinate to that object.
--- p.18

Even if a person is exceptionally holy, you should never make him or her the model for all your actions.
Surely the devil will make that person imitate his shortcomings.
But if you imitate the most holy and most perfect Jesus Christ, you can never go wrong.
--- p.36

He who does not seek the cross of Christ does not seek the glory of Christ.
--- p.38

A weak and sick person cannot work.
Likewise, a soul that loves God sparingly and with difficulty cannot practice virtue perfectly.
--- p.50

A soul that desires nothing but God never walks in darkness.
Even though you may think of yourself as ignorant and the most pitiful of humans…
--- p.54

A soul with deep faith can advance without fear of the devil, the cunning and powerful enemy.
Saint Peter said that the most effective way to fight the devil is to “resist him, steadfast in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9).
--- p.67

Even if something is seen through supernatural means, it should never be accepted as truth unless it is in accordance with the teachings of Christ and the views of the clergy.
--- p.73

Even if an angel tries to impart light that gives effective power to the soul, when our minds are focused on anything other than God, our souls will remain closed and insensitive.
--- p.85

If you light a piece of wood and leave it on fire, it will stop burning and go out.
The same is true of a lonely soul without a leader.
--- p.87

One human thought is more precious than the whole world.
Our thoughts should be turned toward God.
God alone is worthy of our thoughts.
Any thought that is not related to God is like stealing from God.
--- p.95

How foolish is the soul that, when it finds no inner comfort or sweetness, thinks that God has departed, and on the contrary, when it finds sweetness again, rejoices that it has found God again.
--- p.113

Always keep your mind at peace and do not lose that peace no matter what happens in the world.
Remember that everything on earth has an end.
--- p.121

The most important thing to know God is to know yourself.
--- p.127

When grace or vision is the work of the devil, the soul is inevitably drawn to everything great and valuable, and abhors everything low and mean.
--- p.134

A soul that enjoys only the sensual and knows no other joy is a carnal man.
Even a soul that has only animalistic, earthly human values, if it cuts off its desires, becomes spiritual and becomes a being fit for heaven.
--- p.146

Do not think that only worldly happiness or sensual pleasures are obstacles to following God's path.
Even spiritual comfort and joy, if desired or received for one's own sake, will only produce the same result.
--- p.166

Publisher's Review
With St. John of the Cross
Becoming closer to God step by step

When we realize God's love and decide to grow closer to Him, what is the first thing we should do? We must look back on our lives and transform ourselves into what God sees as good.
We must discard bad attitudes and habits and cultivate virtues one by one.
In Chapter 1: The Burden We Must Let Go of to Approach God and Chapter 2: What Attitude Should We Have When Approaching God?, we prepare our hearts to seek God, following the advice of Saint John of the Cross.
It is time to reflect on whether my soul is filled with pride, vanity, and greed for wealth.
And in Chapter 3, ‘How Do We Live in God?’, we learn in earnest how to live as children of God.
We can hear the advice that St. John of the Cross actually gave in his monastery about how to live in God and hear God's voice more clearly and discern His will.
Through prayer, we can learn how to communicate with God and cultivate a peaceful soul that turns only to God through the human yet strict words of a saint.

This book is a classic of Catholic spirituality that has been widely read by Catholics in Korea for over 70 years since it was originally published under the title, “The Proverbs and Spiritual Advice of Saint John of the Cross.”
In revising this book, we have restructured it as described above to make it easier for readers to understand the advice of adults.
Also, the title of this book was changed to 『Spiritual Advice of Saint John of the Cross』 to be as close as possible to the original title.
And now, we've updated some of the less frequently used expressions to a more modern style, and updated the cover and overall design to make it easier for anyone to carry around.

Founder of the Discalced Carmelites
Saint John of the Cross, a leader in the reform of the Carmelite Order

Saint John of the Cross is a saint widely known for leading the reform of the Carmelite Order in the 16th century and founding the Discalced Carmelites, which emphasized strict monastic life.
He is also a poet who sings of deep mystical experiences of God through exquisite spiritual literature such as “The Carmelite Way,” “Dark Night,” and “Song of the Soul.”
Together with Saint Teresa of Jesus, he led the reform of the Carmelite Order and founded 17 monasteries for men and women throughout Spain.

The ultimate pursuit of the spirituality of St. John of the Cross is to realize God's love and to love God passionately.
Adults say that to do this, one must cut off all attachments to external things, leaving only 'Christ crucified' in one's heart.
Therefore, when we read and meditate on this book, we must constantly seek ‘Jesus crucified’, suffer with Him, and rest with Him.
In this process, we meet God.
And meeting God through this book is the hope of an adult.

:My only wish is that the souls who read this will love and serve you more, and progress further, so that they can offer you their unfinished share. (_ Page 11, from 'Author's Note - May All Live in the Spirit of the Saints' _
