Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata's Original Vow Merit Sutra for Recitation and Dharani Prayer
Description
Book Introduction
The Medicine Buddha's Original Vow Merit Sutra - Medicine Buddha, the Buddha of Healing, Revived in Modern Language
In July 2025, Wiang Books, founded by Korean disciples of the American filmmaker, will publish a translated version of the 『Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata Original Merit Sutra』 (commonly known as the "Medicine Sutra"), translated into Chinese by Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, with both Chinese and modern Korean translations and pronunciations.
This publication embodies the efforts to convey the twelve great vows of Bhaisajyaguru, the Bhaisajyaguru Declaration, and the core teachings of Mahayana Buddhism in a familiar and practical way for modern people.
In particular, it is organized so that the Chinese scriptures, Korean translations, and pronunciation notations for recitation are placed side by side so that they can be used immediately for prayer and practice.
In addition, it also includes content necessary for actual practice, such as the prescription for the medicine and the merit of the dedication, so this book clearly shows its nature as a 'guide for healing practice' rather than a simple commentary on the scriptures.
This translated version was created through the joint work of several monks from the Wiyang and Jogye Orders.
The main translators and reviewers were Monk Sang-uk, who is currently practicing at the Wiangjong American temple, Monk Mu-gyeong, who is currently serving as the director of the Songgwangsa Temple administration office, and Monk Hyeon-an and Monk Dae-ji, who are both Seon meditation instructors and practitioners of Yaksa meditation.
They participated in this publication with the hope that the practical value of the Yaksa Gyeong would be widely known.
The Medicine Buddha Sutra is a sutra that contains the twelve original vows made by the Medicine Buddha for all living beings who wish to overcome illness and disaster, and the vows of the twelve Yaksha leaders who protect the teachings.
Through this book, readers will be able to experience the Buddha's compassion, healing power, and the effectiveness of practice.
“This book is not simply a translation of scriptures, but was prepared as a practical guide for practice and practice,” said Venerable Hyeonan. “My teacher, Venerable Yeonghwa, always said that reviving and widely teaching the forgotten Bhaisajyaguru Dharma is a very important task in this day and age.”
The 『Medicine Master Yuli Light Tathagata Original Vow Merit Sutra』 can be purchased at online and offline bookstores and temple bookstores nationwide.
Wiang Books plans to publish the Zen Master's guide to Zen Buddhism, Pure Land Dharma talks, and lectures on Mahayana sutras in the future, and plans to continue to present a variety of books that provide practical and realistic help in practice.

Into the book
In the ancient human world, if you ever heard the name of the Medicine Buddha, even briefly, even if you are now in the evil realm, you will briefly recall that Buddha's name.
Then you can immediately escape from there and be reincarnated among humans again.”
--- p.42
“If, while living among humans, you once heard the name of the World-Honored Medicine Master, the Buddha of Pure Glass, then because of that good connection, you will now remember it again and take refuge in it with all your heart.
Then, through the divine power of the Medicine Buddha, you will be liberated from all suffering, and all your senses will become bright and sharp, so you will be wise and knowledgeable, always seeking the highest law, and always meet good friends.”
--- p.50
“When the Medicine Buddha, Lapis Lazuli Light, attained Bodhi, he used the power of his original vows to examine all sentient beings and saw that they were suffering from various diseases and pains.
They suffered from various diseases such as leprosy and yellow fever, or were possessed by monsters or evil spirits, were oppressed by scissors, or were poisoned by curses and poison.
Some died young or met with unexpected death.
So he wanted to eliminate these diseases and sufferings and make their wishes come true.”
--- p.62
“If the treasure of this sutra is circulated in a place where there are people who receive and uphold this sutra, then through the merits of the original vow of the World-Honored Medicine Master, Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata, people will hear his name.
You must know that sudden death will never happen again there.”
--- p.74
“Or, even if a woman is about to give birth and is in extreme pain, if she can sincerely recite, praise, respect, and make offerings to the Tathagata, all her suffering will disappear.”
--- p.82
“When the Buddha had finished speaking these words, all the Bodhisattvas, Mahasattvas, great disciples, kings, ministers, Brahmins, householders, gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, and all the great assembly, hearing what the Buddha had said, were greatly delighted, believed in it, and put it into practice.”

Publisher's Review
The 『Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata Original Vow Merit Sutra』 is not simply a translation of a Buddhist scripture.
This is a practice guide designed to help modern people suffering from illness and pain directly experience and practice the Buddha's compassion and vow of healing.
Wiang Books chose the 『Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata Original Vow Merit Sutra』 as its first publication, and it contained deep meaning in it.
This sutra, which contains the twelve great vows of the Medicine Buddha, the words of the Medicine Buddha, and the oaths of the Dharma Protectors, is an invaluable resource that can serve as the central axis of one's practice.
We have consistently witnessed the various sufferings and obstacles experienced by countless people in the field of Sunshine Map, especially the extreme inner pain.
So, now is the time when we desperately need the power and help of the Bhaisajyaguru Sutra and the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha.
In particular, this translated version has a practical structure that can be used immediately for recitation, prayer, and meditation by including the original text, translation, and pronunciation.
The translators did not stop at simply translating the text; they dedicated themselves to reviving its meaning with a modern sensibility, ensuring it could reach all who seek healing and recovery.
Modern society is an era in which mental illness is deepening.
At times like these, the power of the Medicine Buddha and the power of the Dharma protectors are felt even more keenly.
We at Wiang Books hope that this book will be a practical source of strength not only for Buddhists but also for all those who desire peace of mind and body.
