Living a new life following Wesley
Description
Book Introduction
A self-help book for those who agree with Wesley's life.
There is a wealth of information, theories, and research on John Wesley's life, activities, theology, and spirit.
But nowhere is there a guidebook on 'real training for believers' or 'how to live and win as a Christian in this age.'
If nothing has changed despite having believed in Jesus for a long time and living as a descendant of Wesley, it is because you only knew it with your head and not with your body.
“Living Like Wesley” was planned with the goal of becoming a Christian (Wesleyan) in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
This is not a book containing intellectual information about Wesley, but rather a book about 'becoming-Wesley'.
In other words, it is not a book about learning about John Wesley, but a guidebook like 'Follow John Wesley for 40 Days' about living like John Wesley.
Even though he lived over 300 years ago, John Wesley's image and actions are still relevant to us because, like us, he lived through turbulent times.
Looking at Wesley, who lived during a time of social change, clearly reveals the outline of the practices we must undertake today.
"Living Like Wesley" guides readers through themes to put Wesley's life into practice, and anyone who agrees with Wesley's life can use this book as a self-help guide.

Into the book
The reason people don't change even after praying at dawn for 40 years is because they think of prayer as a personal achievement, like homework, or as a tower of self-will.
We must abandon the illusion that spiritual life is about being a model student or achieving moral superiority.
Otherwise, the hardened fruit of pride will be produced.
As we grow older, we become people who judge others by claiming to be like Wesley, rather than people who resemble Wesley.
When putting this book into practice, you should feel a sense of duty, but also be flexible enough to fit your circumstances.
--- p. Prologue
Wesley's determination to give himself to God goes beyond simply devoting himself completely to religious practices, duties, and ministry; it also means dedicating his words, thoughts, intentions, and feelings to God.
In other words, he was going to transform everything he did into an act of devotion to God, not just his prayer life and church ministry, but also when he was eating, going to the bathroom, and even cutting his toenails while watching TV.
This was Wesley's decision to live a life of holy sanctification.
--- p.01 Inner training
Wesley and modern people, although living in different eras, share the same characteristic of living in a period of dramatic change.
Over 300 years ago, Wesley actively embraced and accepted the changes of the times, making them the object and methodology of his ministry.
In other words, he was a man who did not reject, escape from, or simply watch the changing times, but actively responded to them.
No matter how hard you try to stop a new wave from coming in, it never returns.
To ride the current is to go with the flow, but to reject the mighty wave is ahistorical.
In this rapidly changing and anxious world, we seek answers from our teacher, John Wesley.

Publisher's Review
"Living Like Wesley" is a guidebook written by an author who has consistently expressed his own unique voice in the fields of academics, ministry, and education. Now, in his sixties, he has confirmed that he is a Wesleyan and presents specific methods for readers to live as healthy and holy Christians like Wesley.
As the author states, this book is not about Wesley, but rather a guidebook, a training manual, and a book of religious self-help on living like Wesley.
In other words, it is not a theoretical book that lists lengthy theories about practical theology under the name of practical theology, but a guide to faith that will enable you to become a healthy believer by simply following it.
The most distinctive feature of this book is that, along with the author's extensive theological knowledge gained through his research, you can enjoy his thoughts and writing that sharply presents a thorough and realistic awareness of the issues and an alternative way of life to address them.
So, as I experienced through the author's previous books, 『Sermons in Song』(2011) and 『Medieval Mysticism and Women』(2011), this is a book that you will read from beginning to end once you pick it up, and it confirms once again that the author is a truly interesting storyteller of faith.
Also, the author says that he did not intend to write a book about Wesley, but planned this book with the goal of writing a holy Wesleyan, a healthy believer like Wesley. However, 『Living Like Wesley』 accurately cites primary sources that are important for the historical research on Wesley that has been conducted up to recently (a method of understanding his intentions based on the circumstances of his life), and introduces secondary sources necessary for further research in detail.
In that sense, it is not only practical, but also a book with solid academic research.
So, rather than just doing inner training like prayer, reading the Word, fasting, and journaling without any context, we are helping people to clearly understand the principles and reasons and practice theology according to Wesley's thoughts.
Moreover, this book demonstrates that becoming like Wesley, as interpreted through the author's humanistic thoughts and the depth of his life, is no different from becoming a true humanist.
In that sense, Wesley is not simply a doctrinal theologian, but rather a pastor who imparted to us the wisdom he gained through personal experience and practice, and a life mentor.
Even his attitude, which sometimes seems ambiguous and sometimes unclear, shows that Wesley lived a more creative life while maintaining moderation in his life.
Wesley's image is that of a broad-minded person who can convey understanding and empathy to any aspect or area of life.
This is because he was a philanthropist and ecologist who learned from occasional mistakes and trial and error, managed his time and life thoroughly, and was able to look at all living things with affection.
The highlight of this book is the author's deep understanding of popular culture, which he uses to introduce Wesley.
It expresses the interests and life wisdom of various authors, and introduces books, music, and movies that believers must encounter.
This is a passage that reveals the author's will as a cultural activist.
By sketching out the emotions, impressions, and perspectives encountered in all areas of life, including affection for students, compassion for pastors, and empathy for scholars, the author persuasively explains that Wesley also chose the path to God through similar experiences, and thus encourages readers to become Wesleyans.
So, as this book suggests, if you enjoy your life through inner training, self-development, community participation, and life planning, you will not only become a holistic believer like John Wesley, but you will also experience the joy and happiness of discovering that you have lived a 'new life' like Jesus Christ, whom John Wesley so desperately wanted to emulate.
