The Band
Description
Book Introduction
The first book in Korea to compile the band's history from the 1950s to the 2010s!
A book that's like a map to help you truly explore the vast ecosystem that is band music!

No one could have imagined that the moment John Lennon and Paul McCartney, two boys with shaggy hair and tattered guitars, met in a back alley in Liverpool, England in the early 1960s, would change the history of popular music.
There were those who motivated this great(!) meeting of the Beatles, and they were none other than the Crickets.
Formed in 1956, the Crickets were the first musicians to have the prototype of a four-piece rock band: guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.

Band music, which originated from the Crickets and exploded with the Beatles, led the evolution of popular music, from blues and folk rock in the 60s and 70s, to psychedelic and progressive rock, to new wave and heavy metal in the 80s, to grunge and Britpop in the 90s, and finally to EDM and post-sound since the 2000s.

This book is an archive and music essay about bands and musicians who have made their mark on the history of popular music, spanning eras and genres from the 1950s to the 2010s.
This voluminous 1,104-page work, with hundreds of captivating photographs, chronicles how musicians who once served as backing band members for singers evolved into performers and led the way in pop music history.
Additionally, QR codes for carefully selected performance videos and music videos of 405 bands are included, allowing readers to enjoy the bands' representative songs while reading the book.

In the recommendation for this book, Sanulrim's Kim Chang-wan talked about 'things that do not disappear.'
These are the music and traces of life that the band left behind.
When they come together to form a grand narrative and are recorded as history, they become the foundation for evolving the future of music.
This book is a vivid testimony to the narrative and history engraved in the band.
As always, history is a powerful tool for shaping the future.
Music is no different.
If you want to know about the future of music, you need to listen to the history of the band and its music right now.

Publisher's Review
The moment when an encounter becomes music, the history of those things that never disappear

“I thought history was unnecessary.
Because sixty lives sixty and sixteen lives sixteen.
But the first thing I did when I took up this massive work was to look at what happened in 1977.
Because it is the year that Sanulrim debuted.
Have you ever looked back in history? You've been in a band for 45 years without even knowing about the band.
Neither Saxon nor Sanullim made it onto the list of 400 teams here.
It's because history was ignored.
But there are things that don't disappear.”

This is the text that Kim Chang-wan of Sanulrim wrote for the publication of this book.
People say that the era of bands is over.
The reality that computer programming is replacing a significant portion of actual performances nods to the end of the band era.
But even at this very moment, the Beatles' songs are still playing on the radio, in cafes, somewhere on the street, and even from someone's wireless earphones.
It's none other than the band's music! The era of bands may be fading, but the band's music is the music of the present.
These are things that don't disappear.

The origins of Things That Don't Disappear date back to 1956.
Buddy Holly, a young man from Texas, formed the band The Crickets with guitarist Nicky Sullivan, drummer Jerry Allison, and bassist Joe B. Mauldin.
The first four-member rock band with an instrumental lineup of vocals, guitar, bass, and drums was born (page 22).
And years later, across the Atlantic, in a back alley in Liverpool, England, no one could have imagined that the history of popular music would be changed when John Lennon and Paul McCartney, two boys with shaggy hair and tattered guitars, met.
John and Paul took inspiration from the Crickets and named their band the Beatles, and after conquering the British pop music scene, they moved to the United States and became icons of the times (p. 36).

This book is an archive and music essay about bands and musicians who have made their mark on the history of popular music, spanning genres from the 1950s to the 2010s.
This voluminous 1,104-page work, along with hundreds of captivating photographs, depicts how musicians who once served as backing band members for singers evolved into performers and led the history of pop music.

“A band has as many narratives as its members multiplied by their pasts.”

“Loving a band isn’t just about liking a few hit songs, it’s about loving their context.
And it is a pleasure to imagine the struggles and events that may have occurred during the gap between album releases.
As we delve into why a bassist who boasted of flashy slapping changed to a simple and heavy technique centered on roots, and how the vocalist's emotional state is expressed through different facial expressions, gestures, exclamations, or pitch variations in each live performance, music is no longer a stuffed sound inside a speaker, but a jungle that is constantly changing at this very moment.
“I feel like a band has as many stories as the number of members multiplied by their pasts.”

In the recommendation, “On the narrative engraved in the band,” lyricist Kim Eana emphasizes that this book goes beyond simply introducing the band’s hit songs or musical twists and turns.
Almost every band has a frontman, a singer or leader who leads the team, but the band's music is never complete without them alone.
The outstanding value of this book lies in its significant coverage of the musical abilities of each band member, not just the frontman.
The heartwarming stories of band members who quietly played in their own places, away from the spotlight, have always been important nutrients for the band's music.
This is where lyricist Kim Eana's words, "A band has as many narratives as the number of members multiplied by their past days," resonate.

The Doors, the legends of psychedelic rock in the 70s, had the outstanding lead vocalist Jim Morrison, but it was Ray Manzarek's organ, Robbie Kruger's guitar, and John Densmore's drums that completed their music (p. 121).
U2, which first formed in 1976 and still boasts the world's highest ticket sales, is no different.
This book emphasizes that while Bono, who always created a buzz with his bold words and actions, was at the forefront of the band that had not had a single member change for nearly half a century, U2's music would not have existed without the flawless performance skills of the members who followed him (page 573).

The Coldplay story covered in this book also resonates deeply.
Coldplay also focuses a lot of attention on the band's lead vocalist and frontman, Chris Martin, but the other members don't care and quietly stick to their positions.
In particular, drummer Will Champion's diary clearly reveals the mindset of the members as members of the band (p. 973).

“I don’t enjoy flashy fill-ins or rolls.
I listen to the song carefully and only play the drums when it's really necessary.
“When not to hit is as important as how to hit.”

An icon of an era that clashed with the absurd older generation

“The births and anecdotes of countless rock and roll heroes unfold like Greek mythology, like a slightly intoxicating, hazy fairy tale.
When the cellophane paper in each member's color is overlapped, an unexpected and mysterious color unfolds.
The charm of a band is the color that can never be expressed alone.
“The spirit of freedom, rebellion, and rock and roll soars.”

In his recommendation for the book, Han Kyung-rok, bassist and composer for the punk rock band Crying Nut, describes the band's irreplaceable charm as "the mysterious colors that unfold when cellophane sheets in the members' individual colors are overlapped."
And that's when "the spirit of freedom, rebellion, and rock 'n' roll soars."

Yes, that's right.
Freedom and rebellion are the spirit of rock and roll and the spirit of the band.
Many bands have clashed with the absurd establishment, and those in power have often blacklisted bands for disrupting the national order.
The Beatles, who were idols for girls in their early days, increasingly included messages in their music criticizing the Vietnam War and racial discrimination in a white-dominated society, centered around John Lennon.
Bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, and the Grateful Dead served as musical spokespeople for the "Flower Children Generation," who became key figures in the anti-war and peace movements through their historic performance at Woodstock in 1967.
And cultural phenomena such as hippieism, psychedelicism, and counterculture became keywords that explained the identity of bands in the 60s and 70s.

The band's feud with the absurd establishment continued into the 1970s.
With just one studio album, the punk band Sex Pistols harshly criticized the Queen and her family for pursuing their own comfortable lives despite Britain's youth unemployment and severe economic hardship, and young people were enthralled by their music.
The spirit of punk blossomed through the band (p. 422).
The conservative political establishment was overreacting to the mere sight of young people gathered around electric guitars.

In the 1980s, when the Cold War was at its peak, then-US President Ronald Reagan gave the band Bruce Hornsby & the Range an unexpected (!) compliment, calling them "rock music with a solid social safety net."
It was a highly unusual message from a conservative president to a pop band, as the band's music, featuring piano instead of electric guitar, seemed relatively less threatening to conservative politicians.
But that was a serious misunderstanding.
This is because the band was exposing the dark side of America, such as racism and poverty, through lyrics hidden within a gentle sound (p. 697).

American heavy metal band WASP's debut single "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)", released in 1984, received a warning from the Parent Music Resource Center (PMRC), a music censorship group for parents in the United States, for its suggestive and violent content.
This forced Wasp to release their debut album with a "Parental Advisory" label, denoting material harmful to minors. The Parental Advisory Committee (PMRC) was a group founded by Tipper Gore, wife of then-Vice President Al Gore (p. 655). The PMRC would often label albums by musicians deemed uneducational by their standards, many of whom were rock bands.

The conflict, division, drug addiction, and death that tormented their fate

“A boat that can be rowed alone would just circle the same place every day.
But with the band, I could cross the vast ocean beyond the horizon and reach a paradise that exists only in legends.”

As Kim Jong-jin of the fusion jazz rock band Bom Yeoreum Gaeul Gyeoul said, the musicians gathered together to make music and headed towards a paradise that only exists in legends and cannot be reached by a boat that can be rowed alone.
But countless bands have failed before or after reaching paradise.

“They fought often, and that irreconcilable conflict hastened the team’s demise.” (Page 36) This is the story of the Beatles.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney's frequent clashes were a regular topic of conversation among gossips.
Numerous yellow press reports further soured the band's relationship, and the Beetles, having already found paradise, found no reason to stay together any longer.

This wasn't just a Beatles problem.
There have been plenty of bands that have proven that it's difficult for two frontmen with strong personalities to coexist in one band.
Buffalo Springfield, a band famous for its talented musicians Stephen Stills and Neil Young, eventually disintegrated due to the rivalry and conflict between the two (p. 148).
Pink Floyd was no different.
The fight between Roger Waters and David Gilmour did not end with the disbandment of the team, but also led to a bitter legal battle (page 240).

There have been many bands where numerous members had to come and go due to the excessive charisma of one leader with absolute power.
King Crimson has been on and off for most of their careers, with numerous members coming and going in the band.
It was the price of having a genius absolute power holder named Robert Fripp (p. 192).
John Fogerty, frontman of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), was also a lonely genius and dictator.
Unable to contain his overflowing talent, he kept the band's music under his complete control from beginning to end, from writing lyrics and composing to arranging and producing.
It was natural that the other members' sense of alienation and dissatisfaction grew (page 189).

Another decisive factor that shortened the band's lifespan was the members' drugs and early deaths.
Many musicians, including Jimi Hendrix of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jim Morrison of The Doors, and Phil Linott of Thin Lizzy, lost their lives at a young age to drug addiction and had to stop their bands.
Among band musicians, there have been a number of impulsive or accidental deaths.
Nirvana's Kurt Cobain committed suicide with a shotgun (p. 800), and Chicago's Terry Case was killed instantly by a bullet accidentally fired while playing with a gun at a party (p. 528).
Buddy Holly of the Crickets, who appears at the very beginning of this book, had to end his unfortunate life in an unexpected plane crash (page 22).
In short, it was a fiery life.
So many band musicians lived an uneasy life between reality and music, burning out their own lives.

Why You Should Listen to the Band's Music Right Now

American folk singer Don McLean sang the day Buddy Holly died in his song “American Pie” as “The day the music died” (p. 26).
That goes without saying.
Death put an end not only to the musicians' lives but also to their music.

But, despite this, there are (as Kim Chang-wan said) ‘things that don’t disappear.’
It is the music the band left behind, and also traces of their lives.
When they come together to form a grand narrative and are recorded as history, they become the foundation for evolving future music.
This book is a vivid testimony to their narrative and history.
As always, history is a powerful tool for shaping the future.
Music is no different.
If you want to know about the future of music, you need to listen to the history of the band and its music right now.
