Thousand-character script for calligraphers

Lee San, a calligrapher and calligrapher who has worked on advertisements and brands for various companies and organizations, including Chamisul (Hite Jinro), Korean Air, KBS and MBC, Industrial Bank of Korea, Baskin Robbins, and Hyundai Steel, has recently released a new book, 『Practical Thousand Character Classic for Calligraphers』. This is the first book in Korea that reconstructs Thousand Character Classic, the foundation of Chinese characters, from a calligraphic perspective rather than a traditional calligraphy method.


The Thousand Character Classic (千字文) script introduced in this book is based on the Clerical script (隸書) among Chinese character scripts, but the regular strokes were simplified to express it in a familiar font, increasing practicality and popularity.
It may seem like a somewhat unfamiliar font to those who have practiced Chinese calligraphy for a long time, but it omits some of the deep and subtle techniques of calligraphy, making it easier for calligraphers to approach.


The Thousand Character Classic is a representative textbook of Chinese character writing, and has been loved in Korea for many years as a textbook for beginners learning Chinese characters for the first time.
Through this book, readers will not only learn calligraphic elements but also enjoy the pleasure of learning the Thousand Character Classic.


Artist Lee San, who has been constantly researching calligraphy and pioneering new and creative areas of calligraphy, expressed his hope through this book, saying, “I hope that in the future, research and utilization of Chinese character calligraphy will expand further in the field of calligraphy, so that Chinese character calligraphy will be widely used as a tool of expression of another high level in our daily lives.”
