When soul meets matter
When soul meets matter
Description
Book Introduction
The theme of "When Soul Meets Matter" is the mind's remarkable ability and determination to create images and narratives, and to exert self-regulating powers, as soon as a free and protected space for expression is provided.
This applies not only to individuals (children and adults) who struggle with adverse experiences, but also to those seeking deeper meaning in life.
The mind's ability to self-regulate is clearly revealed and experienced in sandplay therapy.

Into the book
I believe that sandplay has distinct advantages over other therapeutic approaches.
Most clients experience a sense of 'wonder and awe' within minutes of touching the sand.
The first contact with sand triggers unexpected sensations, forgotten states of mind, and new thoughts and movements associated with visual images.
Sometimes the hands move naturally, following specific paths, making holes, or finding spaces because “the sand is so inviting.”
Sometimes it creates completely unexpected shapes, as if the hands had made them themselves.
“Oh, this is so amazing!” “I never thought of that...” “This is the first time I’ve felt this way!” “...
“It comes to mind.” As the client’s hands explore the sand’s consistency, its softness, its immediacy in response to even the slightest touch, all sorts of perceptions and emotions pass through them.
But I can't tell whether they come from within or from without.
They are a cyclical process.
There is a very subtle, continuous, and specific dialogue taking place between the inner and outer worlds, between body and mind, and more generally, between mind and matter.

Publisher's Review
The theme of this book is the mind's remarkable ability and determination to create images and narratives and to exercise self-regulation as soon as a free and protected space for expression is provided.
This applies not only to individuals (children and adults) who struggle with adverse experiences, but also to those seeking deeper meaning in life.
The mind's ability to self-regulate is clearly revealed and experienced in sandplay therapy.

In this book, I will introduce two sandplay application methods that I have developed over 20 years.
These two approaches are for different target groups and extend the same basic principles in two different directions.

The first application is an individual treatment process based on kinesthetic imagination.
In this approach, clients are encouraged to use only sand and water, and are initially guided to exclude verbal descriptions and visual imagery, focusing on the tactile perception of their hands touching the sand.
This perception naturally evokes sensory memories.
The attachment model acquired during childhood (J.
You will quickly have a physical experience that symbolizes it so clearly and concretely that you will directly recognize it (Bowlby).
The process in which kinesthetic imagination occurs is also the moment when a new emotional state within us is created.
I will illustrate, with examples, the process by which clients engage in tactile perception and pre-symbolic and symbolic expression.

The second application is called Expressive Sandwork, a program developed specifically for children in social crisis situations.
This application is currently being carried out by an international team of financial analysts from eight countries.
Expressive sand work is done in groups.
Again, the key to sandplay is the activation of the mind's self-regulatory tendencies.
Several cases will demonstrate how little therapeutic intervention is needed and how specifically self-regulation of psychosomatic systems plays a role when interactions between adult caregivers and children occur at a preverbal, even presymbolic, level.

I will also introduce some actual expressive sandwork projects that have been carried out in the latter part of the book.
One project, carried out in Germany in collaboration with the Jung Institute in Stuttgart, involved playing in the sand with Yazidi children from Iraq who had fled to Germany after being victims of extreme atrocities committed by ISIS.
Each course will demonstrate in a moving and compelling way what the child's mind can achieve, even in the face of extreme trauma.
The same was true for children in Ukraine, where the International Association for Analytical Psychology conducted an expressive sandwork project in five cities, even cities directly located in war zones.
We will also present project examples from Romania and Colombia.
