Book Introduction
This sixth edition of this book has been revised and supplemented based on the most up-to-date survey data, related statistics, and key issues and challenges to reflect the new government's commitments to persons with disabilities, recent changes, and future expectations.
The existing system of dividing the entire content into three parts was maintained, but many detailed modifications were made.
Part 1 consists of Chapter 1, 'Concept of Disability and Categories of Disability', Chapter 2, 'Understanding Disability', Chapter 3, 'History of Welfare for Persons with Disabilities', and Chapter 4, 'Theoretical Approaches to Disability'.
Chapter 3 covers the history of disability welfare in the West and Korea, as well as the international disability movement and the Korean disability movement.
As a key point of revision, Chapter 2 was revised based on the results of the 2023 Survey on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, and Chapter 3 added newly enacted related laws.
Part 2 consists of Chapter 5, 'Life Cycle Approach and Disability', Chapter 6, 'Characteristics and Registration by Type of Disability', Chapter 7, 'Disability Welfare Policy and Related Laws', Chapter 8, 'Disability Welfare Service Delivery System', and Chapter 9, 'Understanding Disability Welfare Facilities'.
In particular, Chapter 5 adds pros and cons and improvement tasks for the adult guardianship system that has been in effect for 10 years, and Chapter 6 organizes the types of disabilities in a simpler and clearer manner.
Chapter 8 examines the implications of Korea's welfare system through the delivery system of welfare services for the disabled. Chapter 9 introduces independent residential service providers, newly added to residential facilities for the disabled, and also covers shelters for the disabled, which have been incorporated as a new type of welfare facility for the disabled.
Part 3, Chapter 10, 'Understanding Key Issues in Welfare for Persons with Disabilities 1', covers disability and aging, disability and family, and disability and women. Chapter 11, 'Understanding Key Issues in Welfare for Persons with Disabilities 2', explains accessibility for persons with disabilities, disability and assistive technology, and persons with disabilities and universal design.
Chapter 12, "Welfare of Persons with Disabilities Around the World," updates global disability-related statistics and focuses on employment and education for persons with disabilities in major countries around the world.
Chapter 13, ‘Practical Tasks for Welfare of Persons with Disabilities,’ has also been revised to focus on the new government’s keywords for persons with disabilities.
