Description
Book Introduction
“I will awaken your memories.”
A story of growth and recovery, following in the footsteps of "Almond" and "Paint."
A beautiful fantasy that stirs your heart even after you close the book.
―Teacher Kim Mi-young

The short novel "Dive" was published as Volume 111 of Changbi Youth Literature.
"Dive" is a story about a water girl named Seon-yul and a robot named Su-ho who set out to find their lost memories in a flooded Korea in 2057.
The underwater world unfolds so beautifully that it seems as if it could be grasped at any moment, and it conveys the emotion of the teenage protagonist coming to terms with his past self and moving forward into a new future.
The protagonist, Suho, a robot who wakes up in a destroyed world with four years of memory erased, resonates with today's teenagers questioning their own existence.
Also, the great virtue of this work is that it is a coming-of-age story that anyone who has ever felt like the past is shackling them can nod their head to.

New writer Danyo meets readers for the first time through 『Dive』.
Already acclaimed by the Blind Dictionary Review Board for its vivid descriptions, delicate prose, and captivating characters, this work possesses all the power that an English adult novel can offer.
It's great to see the emergence of a newcomer who supports everyone who wants to move forward.

Into the book
Seoul has always been synonymous with Korea.

Even when all the ice in the world melted and the sea covered the buildings, even when Incheon was submerged, even when all the countries fought wars, even when the dam that protected Korea collapsed, the people of Seoul continued to live in Seoul.
--- p.7

The world seen from the bottom of Seoul looked like an overturned blue-green hood.
In it, the sun was a white, round circle, and the blue light surrounding it gradually darkened with the depth of the water.
--- p.9

It looked just like a human on the outside, but when you put it face to face, it felt different.
It was smooth and when pressed with a fingernail, it felt like touching soft glass.
--- p.15

“We are watermen.
I dive into Seoul and bring back old stuff.
“I stopped by the basement of a building I had never seen before, and there were people in plastic boxes.”
--- p.23

I intend to live until I find out what I'm curious about.
We might figure it out in ten days, or it might take years.
In the meantime, I'll get to know you better than I do now.
So, after I found my memories… … .
What should I do?
--- p.77

The melody, who had been slurring the end of her words, placed her hand over Suho's.
A feeling of infinitely ordinary yet affectionate came over me.
If we combine all the stories we've shared so far and filter out the words, wouldn't only the warm temperature remain?
Such warmth, though empty, contains everything, and conveys more than lengthy persuasion.
--- p.104

Thick rectangular prisms stood like ink on a bright blue canvas.
As Suho was examining each part of the crude copperplate engraving, he soon discovered a familiar number on the lower right.
--- p.126

Life was terrible in some ways, but it somehow went on, and there was a delicate balance between the two.
Even though I feel like I'm going to end everything right away, I still have the balance to face tomorrow.
I decided not to give it a name.
Whether it was hope or inertia didn't matter anymore.
--- p.145

Happiness that cannot be reached becomes sadness as vivid as it is, and things that cannot be undone remain as regrets.
As we live, we have the opportunity to look back on past moments, but the opposite can also happen.
The past binds the present.
--- p.159

There are moments in the world that come without any agreement or coordination, just as if something were thrown at you.
There are things that can only be faced that way.
--- p.160

Suho smiled brightly, meeting the melody's gaze, and after a moment of silence, Jia burst into laughter, a beat late.
One afternoon, the sound of laughter grew and shrank like gentle waves, and the sunlight, which had been transparent, took on a soft texture.

Publisher's Review
★Recommended by actor Shim Dal-gi, novelist Jo Ye-eun, and teacher Kim Mi-young!★

A dreamlike dystopia, like walking through a dream.
I read it in one sitting.
―Actor Sim Dal-gi

Therefore, this novel is not a story about an ending, but about a beginning.
―Novelist Jo Ye-eun

I am confident that this novel, which forces us to confront fundamental questions about life, death, and human existence, will invite readers into a world of immersion.
―Teacher Kim Mi-young

I dive into Seoul and bring the stuff back.
But are these really people?

The world in 『Dive』 is a dystopia where all the ice has melted and the world is submerged in water.
Korea is no exception.
Even after the city was submerged and the dam collapsed, people continued to live on the mountaintops that were not submerged.
Seon-yul, a waterman who retrieves old items from the water around Nogosan Mountain in Seoul, fights with Namsan waterman Woo-chan one day and then they have a competition to see who can retrieve the nicer item.
Melody retrieves a machine that looks exactly like a human from a diving bet and decides to wake it up.

“If this happens, I think we’ll have a lot to talk about.
“Where are all the people I used to know? Do I have to keep living like this? And… … .”
“If this is what’s going to happen, why did you wake me up?” (Page 20)

The awakened machine introduces itself as 'Guardian'.
Suho was originally human, but was reborn as a machine after undergoing a brain scan just before his death.
Before deciding to continue staying with Melody in Nogosan, Suho discovers something strange.
There is a gap of four years between the last memory and the world being submerged in water.
Where has the mechanical guardian, who has downloaded the memories of the human guardian, been and what has he been doing for four years?
Another question is the relationship between Suho and 'Uncle Gyeong-i', who takes care of the watermen of Nogosan.
Uncle Kyung seems to have had a connection with Suho before he became a machine, but both Uncle and Suho remain silent about it.
The key to this silence will lie in the memories of the four lost years.

“It’s Chae Soo-ho.
Chae, Suho.”
“Chae Soo-ho.”
The melody gave the impression that the uncle's expression, as he repeated the three phrases, was a little distant from the world.
(Page 38)

Suho tells Seon-yul that in exchange for going to a bet with Woo-chan, he wants her to help him find his memories.
Places where you can find clues include the hospital submerged in water, the apartment you lived in, and the street you walked on.
Melody and Suho, who are searching for the truth, 'dive' into the submerged Seoul.
Will Suho be able to face his past self and find himself again?

“I’ll go out and bet.
So you too, find my four years.”
Soon, the melody realized what it was that it had taken out of the plastic cube.
It wasn't a betting item, it wasn't a perfectly functioning machine, it was a past that hadn't yet arrived.
(Page 44)

Finding my past and memories.
That's taking a chance.
A chance to tie up the past and move forward anew.

Everyone has felt at least once that they want to cover up memories they don't know about and don't want to face them.
It could be a horribly embarrassing memory, or a sharp, cut wound.
Suho is in the best condition to live in the future according to the feeling he wants to forget.
Because they don't know their own past.
But even though Suho has become a machine, he still wants to know who he is and tries to remember things he doesn't want to remember.
When the past seems to be holding him back and he can't swim forward, Suho knows that the fastest way to move forward is to face the past and embrace it.

Suddenly, I felt the word 'opportunity' growing in importance.
There are opportunities not only in the future but also in the past.
A chance to tie it up and create something new.
(Page 165)

The characters in "Dive" have the strength to overcome their past of hurt and conflict.
And finally, when they stand up, they hold each other's hands.
Readers of 『Dive』 will naturally root for the kindness that blossoms in a ruined world.
It's time to dive into Seoul and follow those who 'choose to flow rather than stagnate.'

Author's Note

I started writing "Dive" in January 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic was just beginning, and it wasn't released until May 2022.
Over the past two and a half years, the world we live in has become a little closer to the Seoul in Dive.
I believe it is time to move beyond the myth of endless growth and prepare for and embrace an era of contraction.
Even if war doesn't break out or Seoul doesn't flood, the time is coming when we will have to give up and forget the things we have taken for granted and cherished so far.
But people will continue to live, so it will still be important to treat each other with respect.
