Debate School Science Beyond the Answer
Debate School Science Beyond the Answer
Description
Book Introduction
The revised edition of 『Debate School Beyond the Answer: Science』 has been published.
This book, written by teachers from the "Science Teachers' Association for Dreaming Values," which has developed and distributed teaching materials on the social impact and responsibility of science to schools, reconstructs scientific issues that are causing a stir in our society in a pro- and con-debate format, helping young people think deeply about both sides of the issue rather than leaning toward one side.

This book, published in 2011, won the Publishing Culture Award and has been consistently loved by readers for eight years.
However, as time passed, there were many changes not only in science and technology but also in our society.
In keeping with these changes, the arguments covered in each chapter have been replaced with the latest cases and information, and the flow of argument has been reorganized and published as an 'upgraded edition.'
As the years go by, the importance of science and technology is becoming more and more evident.
Through this book, our youth will naturally experience that the various problems of cutting-edge science are their own problems facing us right now, and will seriously consider the social responsibility of science and technology.

Publisher's Review
Science and technology are always at the center of hot issues like humidifier disinfectants, fine dust, and AlphaGo, and today, our lives cannot be considered without science and technology.
Although scientific and technological issues affect all members of society, there are few opportunities to seriously discuss scientific issues in middle and high schools.
Should scientific and technological issues be left to the experts? Can we move beyond memorized answers and hearsay to empower children to voice their own opinions on the scientific issues that govern our lives? This very question was the starting point for "Debate School Beyond Answers: Science."

The reason for publishing a revised edition of a book that has established itself as a steady seller since its publication in 2011, including winning the 52nd Publication Culture Award, being selected as a recommended book by many organizations including Happy Morning Reading, School Library Journal, and Indigo Bookstore, and being included in Korean language textbooks, is because over the past eight years, there have been many changes not only in science and technology but also in our society.

The Inner Secrets of Science and Technology Dissected Through Discussion

If science is the future, then the problems it brings are the problems of our youth, the next generation.
Can't we empower children to speak their minds on the scientific issues that govern our lives, beyond memorized answers and hearsay? "Science: A Debate School Beyond Answers" stems from this very question.

The teachers of the "Science Teachers' Association Dreaming of Values," who wrote this book, reconstructed the scientific issues that have recently stirred up our society into a pro- and con-debate format, allowing us to think deeply about the positions of both sides.
Is nuclear power truly a technology that produces safe, clean energy? Can the lessons learned from the swine flu and foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks help us understand viruses and diseases in a new way? How should we view human interventions in nature, such as the Four Major Rivers Project and polar region development? Furthermore, the book guides us to consider topics closely related to our daily lives, such as ecological living, embryonic stem cells, nanotechnology, and genetically modified foods.

This book challenges the long-held assumption that science deals only with the world of correct answers, that science is a rigid and cold thing that exists only in the laboratory, and brings science into the realm of lively debate. It will provide young people with a new perspective on science and the depth and fun of scientific thinking.

Science out of the lab

Science, which was once complicated and confusing, a science that was a headache with experiments and formulas, has been reborn through this book as science that is closely related to our lives, and as exciting science that easily gets into our heads.
This is because science teachers, who have been making sincere efforts to ensure that science finds its place in schools, have fully utilized their field experience to provide rich content and fun elements throughout the book.
[Opening Your Mind] helps readers approach unfamiliar topics in a relaxed manner through stories that stimulate their imagination; [Take a Stand] allows readers to make their own judgments about the issue after reading; and [Read More] allows readers to encounter "science stories beyond science," such as environmental rights, consensus conferences, and bioethics. This allows readers to fully understand an issue while also enabling natural expansion of their thinking.
Additionally, the book is thoughtfully arranged with a wealth of images and visuals carefully selected to fit the theme, and the text's wings are also carefully filled with essential supplementary information.

Dreaming of value beyond the correct answer

Science, which used to be a vague fantasy of childhood, like tooth-brushing robots or super pills, is now reduced to difficult and complex test questions the moment we enter school.
Young people who were thrust into the world without even having time to properly understand science may end up as adults, leaving policies and decisions related to science and technology to a select few so-called experts, and living as mere bystanders who unconditionally applaud words like boundless competitiveness and trillions of won in value.

Amidst the slogan of fostering creative scientific geniuses, countless ordinary children are increasingly alienated from science. How can we teach these children that the original purpose of science was to bring happiness to humanity? How can we help our children grow into responsible citizens who demand and demand the social responsibility of science, rather than being unilaterally driven by it? This book embodies the earnest hope of science teachers: that future generations will not blindly push away cutting-edge technologies that will profoundly impact their lives or irresponsibly entrust them to others, but rather live in constant dialogue with science.
The sincere wish of science teachers who dream of everything, hoping that the future of the next generation will be healthier and more beautiful.
