Written by Jostein Gaarder
A philosophical indictment of the environment, the Earth, and the future of humanity!

A world where cutting-edge smartphones replace computers, monitors hanging from the ceiling greet you when you open your eyes, and the Internet connects you in forests, underwater, and even in space.
But hundreds of species of plants and animals have gone extinct, tigers and bees are no longer seen, and climate refugees are wandering, leaving their homes turned into deserts by global warming.
Fossil fuels are running out, so we have to walk without cars… … .
We invite you to Earth in 2084!

『Earth 2084』, written by Jostein Gaarder, who moved 40 million readers around the world with 『Sophie's World』, has returned with a new look after 10 years.
When it was first published, it received favorable reviews from so many organizations that it would be difficult to list them all, including the Korea Publication Industry Promotion Agency's recommended books for youth, the National Library for Children and Young Adults' librarians' recommended books, the Happy Morning Reading recommended books, the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education's Reading Golden Bell selected books, the Bookttase summer vacation recommended books, the Book Token selected books, and the Open Children's recommended books, and was greatly loved by readers.

Jostein Gaarder, a philosopher and novelist, seemed to be a prophet, and already ten years ago, in his book Earth 2084, he gave us a significant warning about the climate crisis, similar to the IFoA report.
This book is an environmental science fiction novel that delicately weaves together scientific imagination and literary symbolism like warp and weft to depict a future Earth where countless plants and animals have gone extinct due to global warming. Against the backdrop of a planet in crisis, it sharply explores the future of humanity and introspects on human nature.

Into the book
Nora loved the last day of the year.
Of course, if you were asked to choose between the thrill of climbing a mountain to spend the last hours of the year in a cabin or the hope of descending the mountain, wrapped in a blanket and held in Mom and Dad's arms, with the first day of the new year in your arms, it wouldn't be an easy choice.
But in the winter when Nora was ten years old, there was no snow not only in the lowlands but also in the high mountains.
The ground was frozen solid by the bitter cold, but only occasional sleet fell, and no real snow could be seen.
Even the dizzying-looking canyon was shamefully bare, shedding its white winter coat under the wide-open sky.
The adults were muttering.
Occasionally, I heard words like global warming and climate change.
Even though these were words she was hearing for the first time, they strangely touched Nora's heart deeply.
That was the first time it occurred to me that the world wouldn't always be the way it is now.
On the last day of the year, people climbed the mountain to welcome the new year.
Because it didn't snow, we had to ride a tractor instead of a sled.

Nova looks around the room where she is lying.
It's blurry.
The wall is red.
Raindrops patter down through the long windows beneath the steeply sloping mansard roof.
There is a 'hiccup' sound from the terminal.
A monkey with round eyes and a small body appears on the screen.
Another species of primate appears to have disappeared from the face of the Earth forever.
It has been a long time since the silky monkeys were no longer found in the forest.

The forests of South America where the silky monkeys lived were devastated by fire long ago.
The last animal in captivity at the zoo has died, leaving only photos and memories.
It's sad.
And it's terrible.
The hiccup comes again.
This time it's an iguana.
Even those that once lived in the Americas are now on the verge of extinction.

Uma gently strokes the crimson ruby ring and speaks in a solemn voice like a magician.
“You will soon be handed the Earth I lived on when I was sixteen.
But you have to promise me, you know, that you're going to take really good care of the Earth.
This is your second and last chance.
From now on, you have to be very careful.
“An opportunity like this will never come again.”
Before Uma could even finish speaking, a voice suddenly boomed, as if speaking from a basement or a deep cave.

“Let’s meet again in exactly seventy-one years.
“At that time, you will be responsible for the appearance of the Earth.”
Nova's whole body suddenly becomes limp like kimchi.
Is it really so tiring to be sucked into a magical world unlike any other? The room shakes.
Uma laughs childishly in front of Nova and then leans her head against the back of the chair.
It's like lying down comfortably before death.

But soon a hoarse, phlegmy voice is heard.
To Nova's ears, it sounded like a magic spell you might hear at a witches' festival.
“The birds are coming back…….
All the birds are back! Blackbirds, thrushes, magpies, and starlings, they all return.
They come back in droves.
Now everyone is back… … , with good luck and blessings!”

“Do you believe in the parallel universe theory?”
“Nora, stop it now!”
“I believe.
I have a strong feeling that I live in two parallel worlds.
If not, then at least we are in contact with another dimension.
“Something over there keeps sending me signals… … .”
“I already told you that story!”
"okay."
“I get scared every time you say something like that.”
“Are you scared of the existence of other dimensions, or of not knowing what’s on the other side?”
“It’s scary that there are multiple realities existing in your head at the same time.” “Oh, don’t worry about that.
“There’s no need to be afraid.”
“Be careful! And Nora, when you’re with me, can you focus a little more on just the two of us?”
“I’ll try.
“See you later!”
“Okay, see you later!”
Nora stood in the room for a moment, lost in thought.
Then, another world approached again.
A tiny piece of debris transmitted from a distant future world.

Nora continued her story.

“Aunt Suniva always said,
That ring has the power to grant three wishes.
But Aladdin used up two of his wishes, so now he only has one wish left.
Until the day she died, my aunt believed that anyone wearing this ring in a critical situation would have their wish granted.
But my aunt didn't use that wish.
[Omitted] He thought it would be better to pass his last wish on to his descendants.
“If in the future you have a great and urgent wish that requires the help of this ring, then use it.”
Jonas got up from his seat and paced around the wooden floor of the cabin.
Then he extended his finger and pointed at Nora.
“You inherited that last wish?”
Nora stared at Jonas and nodded.
Then he spoke in a voice that seemed tired but also somewhat proud.
“I already used that wish, Jonas.
There's nothing left now.
Because that's my last wish.
To be exact, I didn't use that wish in this era, but seventy-one years later.
In a future where the Earth's environment is so endangered that it is difficult to find life in tropical rainforests and wetlands, North American prairies, and African savannas.
My most fervent wish was to give this world another chance.
[Omitted] This is the last one.
From now on, we must know exactly what we are doing and how to do it, and then act accordingly.
Because Aladdin's ring no longer has any magical power left.
I'm sure of that."
At first, Jonas just shook his head, but soon burst into laughter.

Publisher's Review
Jostein Gaardermann's exquisite meeting of 'scientific imagination and literary symbolism'!

《Earth 2084》 depicts a bleak future for humanity, where biodiversity is depleted due to climate change, and draws on two symbols from two classic literary masterpieces to maximize the author's imagination.

The first symbol is a number.
The number '2084' in the title is taken from George Orwell's novel '1984'.
Orwell set the dystopian era that would come upon humanity in 1984, but Gardner gives us another 100 years.
The protagonist, Nora, who has experienced the future 100 years in advance, urges us on in the book.
'You must decide whether to simply accept the dark future or to try to change it now.'

The second symbol is the protagonist.
'Nora' is the same name as the main character in Ibsen's play 'A Doll's House'.
Ibsen's Nora is a character in the 19th century who boldly throws off the shackles of marriage and seeks freedom and equality.
Nora from Gaarder is also depicted as a 21st-century teenager who is concerned about climate change caused by global warming and takes active action.

Perhaps that's why Professor Choi Jae-cheon of the Department of Eco-Science at Ewha Womans University says this in his "Recommendation."

“I am one of those who eagerly await the rebirth of literature and science as a single cultural discourse.
Of course, there are countless writers who have made such efforts.
But T., who wrote “The Waste Land”
S. Eliot and T., author of Brave New World.
“Except for Huxley, there are few people who have truly impressed me.”
However, after reading Jostein Gaarder's Earth 2084, I have one more comment to add here.

“I decided to keep an eye on Jostein Gaarder from now on.
I think he might be one of the few writers who can write science fiction.”
_In the words of recommendation

It's time to have the courage to fix the future crisis!

The main characters, Nora and Nova.
The two main characters, both seventeen years old, are girls living on Earth in the present year 2013 and Earth in the future year 2084.
Nora, who has a rich imagination, is terrified of climate change due to global warming.
Nora, who received psychological counseling from a psychiatrist for this incident, followed the doctor's advice and created an environmental group in her neighborhood with her boyfriend, Jonas.

But after that, Nova, who lives on Earth in 2084, keeps appearing in my dreams.
The world Nova lives in is incredibly depressing.
Climate change causes resource depletion and decreased food production, leading to wars and a rapid decline in population, and even animals that were once common in the surrounding area, such as bees and birds, become extinct.
People, too, lose the vibrant spirit of 2013 and, like other animals, are left to await extinction.
Moreover, due to extreme global warming, we can no longer use fossil fuels.
A situation has arisen where a logging job that could be completed in two days with a chainsaw and a can of gasoline takes twenty people working with axes (!) for six months.

After experiencing the future as Nova in her dream, Nora decides to take action.
So, I seriously think about how I can prevent the extinction of plants and animals with my boyfriend.
Then, they come up with a brilliant idea: to create a "green vending machine" that allows people to easily make donations to protect endangered species! Will their idea prove to be a breakthrough that will save the future?

In this way, 《Earth 2084》 lightly addresses the topic of the 'climate crisis' by placing interesting and imaginative devices like Aladdin's ring and parallel universes throughout, while also presenting hopeful alternatives like the 'vegetable and animal vending machine.'
In the process, the figures of Nora and Jonas, who take the lead in overcoming the global crisis, not only present a healthy image of today's youth who are actively pioneering their own lives, but also provide an example of 'climate action' that is desperately needed by today's youth.

Moreover, as the author is a philosopher, his greatest strength is that he presents a convergent way of thinking that interprets the hot issue of the 'climate crisis' through philosophy.
Even while talking about the environment, he never lets go of the fundamental concerns about the existence of 'human beings'.

Through the various characters and events that appear in the book, humans are sharply accused of being warlike animals that do not care about the extermination of other species to protect their own genes, self-centered animals that are only concerned with the present without considering future generations, and the embodiment of desire that only seeks to extract resources until they are depleted without caring about the destruction of the Earth.

At the same time, it emphasizes that humans are precious creatures that inherited the Earth's genes and are the only animals that are curious about the origin of the universe, and that self-sacrifice is also human nature, and thus delivers a message of hope that the parts that have gone wrong so far will soon be corrected, dispelling vague fears about the future.
