Book Introduction
For the 4th Industrial Revolution Generation
The true path to reading,
Opening the era of 'the definitive version of abridged versions' of world literature!

The most systematic and innovative collection of abridged versions of world literature for the youth generation responsible for the future, and furthermore, for the parent generation [The Power of Thinking: Professor Jin Hyeong-jun's World Literature Collection] Volume 1, "The Iliad."
As the saying goes, all art began with the Iliad, the oldest and greatest epic poem.
This is a work from the 8th century BC that tells the story of the last 50 days of the 9th year of the Trojan War, and depicts the battle between heroes and gods over the fate of Troy.

[The Power of Thinking: Professor Jin Hyeong-jun's World Literature Collection] is the culmination of a ten-year long-term project by Professor Jin Hyeong-jun, a literary critic and French literature scholar who served as the second director of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, pouring his lifelong accumulated field experience and affection for future generations into it.
From the Iliad and Chronicles of the Worlds to 1984 and The Stranger, this collection encompasses classic world literature from ancient times to the present day, with 20 volumes debuting, from Homer's Iliad to Stendhal's The Red and the Black.

Today, Korean education is still stuck in the outdated framework of finding the right answers, memorizing them, and taking tests.
As many fear, in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where the world is changing at the speed of light, an education system that focuses solely on "entrance exams" and "advancement" will only darken the future of our children and our society.
Anthropologist Yuval Harari asserts:
“In 30 years, artificial intelligence will replace humans in almost all jobs.
Therefore, it is better to have them read books rather than study at school.”

[The Power of Thinking: Professor Jin Hyeong-jun's World Literature Collection] is a highly valuable and pioneering work that seeks to address these issues and suggest a true path to reading.
In our society, there is a widespread belief that we must read the 'classics' and that we must read the 'complete translations'.
But ironically, few people have actually read those works.
In a word, it is a 'dead' classic.
Professor Jin Hyeong-jun has reborn this 'dead' classic of world literature into a trustworthy 'remastered edition' that is easy for anyone to read, tailored to the eye level and depth of the youth.

Into the book
“Dear ladies! Today we have had a long and heartbreaking conversation.
But then suddenly this thought occurred to me.
I'm wondering if we're just worrying too much about our own work.
So I started to wonder if we were neglecting our rights too much.
Everyone born into this world has the right to enjoy and defend their own life.
There's nothing wrong with using your rights properly.

Look around us.
Everyone is dying.
There are very few normal people alive.
At best, we see people who give themselves over to momentary pleasure and lead dissolute lives.
But what on earth are we doing here? What are we waiting for, what are we dreaming of? Are we just waiting, believing we can get out of this situation?
Since we're all here, let's get out of this city together.
You all have a few cottages in the country, don't you? Wouldn't it be better to go there and live a sober life rather than await death here or watch helplessly as people indulge in their debauchery? Wouldn't it be better to savor the joys, pleasures, and pleasures we can enjoy within the limits of our reason? Of course, even there, they aren't immune to the Black Death.
But there are few houses and not many people living there, so you can enjoy the clear sky and nature.” --- p.16~17

The rumor that Mr. Chappelletto was a saint spread with surprising speed.
People prayed for his care whenever they faced difficulties.
As a result, people began to call him Saint Chapelletto, and they still do today.
Mr. Cepparello da Prado lived that way and died as a saint.
I wonder if God has forgiven him and blessed him, or if he is in hell, held captive by the devil.
If we were to judge only by outward appearances, it would seem natural that we would be punished in hell, but how could we possibly know what happens in the afterlife? All will happen according to God's providence, so we can only continue to pray devoutly.
--- p.37~38

We tend to think that people of lower status are not wise.
But I don't think that's the case at all.
God wouldn't give the gift of wisdom only to those of high status.
I'm going to tell you a story about a person of low social status who cleverly dealt with a difficult situation.
There's one more thing.
We usually think that pointing out people's mistakes is the right thing to do.
That way, you won't make the same mistake again.
That's right.
But I think there are many cases where it's better to just cover it up.
Which side of the story do you think I'm telling you fits? Listen and think about it.

Publisher's Review
A pioneering work of modern fiction, the story of ten days, "The Decameron"

The title of the work, 『Decameron』, means ‘a story of ten days’ in Greek.
Ten young men and women leave the plague-stricken city and gather in the suburbs of Florence.
They exchange one story a day for ten days, for a total of 100 stories.
Some days we choose a topic and talk about it, and other days we talk freely.
Those 100 stories contain all kinds of experiences that people can have while living in the world.

The Decameron is Boccaccio's personal work.
However, the 100 stories in the work are truly diverse.
It is difficult to see this as the work of one person.
This is because Boccaccio knew very well that people's thoughts and lives are bound to be truly diverse.
So, as much as possible, Boccaccio's personal voice is restrained.
Therefore, although the Decameron is Boccaccio's personal work, it contains countless diverse voices.
And the reader is free to use his or her imagination among these diverse voices.

One interesting thing about the Decameron is its historical setting.
In 1348, the Black Death swept through Florence, Italy.
The whole city is gripped by the fear of death.
Florence was left virtually empty as almost everyone died from the Black Death or fled elsewhere.
This is not a situation where you can leisurely share interesting stories.
However, Boccaccio wrote the Decameron against the backdrop of that very terrible situation.
Why? Because I knew the power of storytelling.
Boccaccio says this directly in the beginning of the work:

“Just as pain comes at the end of pleasure, so misfortune ends with a sudden pleasant event.
I want to make it clear that I am writing this book to bring you pleasure and joy.
"No matter how painful something may be, people tend to seek out something enjoyable, right? Because there's no more effective medicine than that."

For Boccaccio, stories are a medicine that heals pain.
A drug that heals, not a drug that makes you forget the pain.
Seven women and three men gather together to talk, sing, and dance.
No matter how painful a situation you find yourself in, you cannot lose your true human nature because of it.
Boccaccio shows through the Decameron that people are not born into this world to live in pain.
It shows that people have the right to enjoy themselves, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
In that sense, the Decameron is a noble book.
