Book Introduction
A sparkling summer day as Narae moves toward her dreams
Eighteen melodies played with a refreshing rhythm

"Our Playlist" is a novel that transparently captures a season in which the protagonist, Na-rae, struggles to find her dream.
As Narae enters her second year of high school, she looks at her career plan, which is left blank, and feels a chill that she must quickly find her dream.
Then, suddenly, she feels the urge to sing like her best friend, Ina, so she follows her to a vocal academy and discovers an unexpected talent and passion.
This book, in a refreshing style, captures the time from the cool breeze of early spring to the arrival of summer, when a breeze cools the sweat, as Narae's unripe dreams ripen and take on a lush color.

Author Yoon Hye-eun captures Na-rae's sparkling summer days with refreshing lines and scenes, creating a feeling as if watching a music video.
Na-rae's daily life with her best friends is humorously portrayed with lively dialogue like a sitcom, bringing a smile to your face. Meanwhile, in the scene where she begins her sweet love with Jeong-hyeon, the thick space between the dialogue conveys a thrilling thrill.
In the scene where Na-rae first goes on stage and screams loudly, her deep emotions are shown raw and tearful.
Reading the vivid descriptions of scenes with clear temperature and rhythm and the seasons that make you feel them with your whole body, you feel as if you have fallen into the summer of the work.

Into the book
'While Sirius is only a few light-years away from us, Rigel is over 1,000 light-years away, making Sirius appear fainter.'
Narae drew a pastel blue highlighter over this sentence.
Believing that his tomorrow might be coming at the speed of Rigel.
Narae imagined her future, approaching from afar, yet shining clearly.
It felt like salt-like stars were being scattered somewhere in my dark heart.

--- p.50

“Yeah, I let it slide because Yoon Ina-rae was there too.
“Today, let’s have a ‘Yullim set meal’!”
Late in the afternoon, I bought a bunch of snacks from the convenience store and went up the stairs to Yurim's house.
Rather than asking if her parents were out, she was relieved to see that the house was empty and that Yurim had confidently brought her friends.
For Ina, who can't eat spicy food, instead of ramen, we enjoyed the course that Yurim had quickly prepared, including cream tteokbokki and banana pudding, and then one or two of us dozed off to the background music of the music movie that Ina recommended.
When I woke up a while later, it had already become pitch black.

--- p.79

If singing is about exchanging feelings through sound, I wondered if the speed of communication between Ina and herself was appropriate.
First, Narae had to figure out what tempo she was going at.
I thought it was so slow that I thought it might have stopped, but now I'm worried that it might be too fast.
If life is a song, Narae wanted to ask the composer who wrote her life.
Where am I now?

--- p.132

It's something that adults would laugh at if they heard it, but when Narae started singing, she felt like her life was finally starting to take hold.
Although it was a very small size that would be covered immediately if you made a fist, there was a certain satisfaction that came from the shape, like a lump of clay that changed shape as you kneaded it.
Narae clenched and unclenched her fist while copying the lyrics.
How long can this life, where I just write down what I feel as I hear it, express it as much as I can, and then move on to the next lesson song, the next, and the next, continue?
--- p.136

“I don’t have anything other than a playlist to collect things I like.
“I barely managed to fill this one too.”
Na-rae's heart felt like it was rising and falling at Jeong-hyeon's words.
It feels like the tension that was about to be released is tightening again.
It didn't seem like it was just a joke.
In reality, Na-rae was no different from Jeong-hyeon.
I thought that the reason we all feel a little lonely when we turn off our phones is because, as Jeong-hyeon said, there aren't many rooms in our hearts where we like something.

--- p.147

“I guess the world is a bit too much for us.”
“Yeah, it sounds better to tell them to study hard and go to a good university.”
If adults heard this, they would probably criticize me for putting off even my dreams.
But our conversation now is more about never giving up on dreaming.
It was also proof that we had crossed the spring with more affection than disappointment in our respective realities.

I feel infinitely overwhelmed and yet infinitely lonely,
The complex truth behind 'dreams'

If you have it, you become impatient, and if you don't have it, you become anxious.
Sometimes it seems like a hopeful word that brings excitement, but sometimes it feels like a burdensome burden.
'Dream' seems to have the power to move forward vigorously, but when we are tired of reality, it carries such a weight that even thinking about the word becomes burdensome.

《Our Playlist》 delicately captures all the boiling emotions of teenagers surrounding their dreams, such as excitement, anxiety, and fear.
The vague feeling of not having a dream, the excitement of finding a new dream, the impatience of not being able to move quickly toward the dream, and even the resignation that I can't be the 'me who flashes in the pan'.
Narae goes through days when she is endlessly overwhelmed by her dreams, and days when she becomes infinitely miserable and lonely because of her dreams, and she approaches the truth of her dreams.

Dreams are never singular, nor do they have to be lofty or grandiose.
I will be lonely again someday, and every time I do, tiny dreams will come to me and make me not be alone.
(...) Narae, Ina, Yurim, Soyoung, and Jeonghyeon are the children who discovered the truth of this dream before me.
―From the author's note

Dreams are not just words that contain a bright and hopeful future.
However, it is not like it is a heavy chain.
If we cast aside the illusions and burdens of our dreams and continue to walk forward like wings, wouldn't we be able to find a thread with a faint but clear color?
The threads of dreams are steadily gathering and weaving together, and even if they don't lead you to a wonderful future like a magic carpet, they will at least serve as a light to brighten up tonight.

“I will never give up on my dream.”
A playlist for teenagers, each running at their own pace.

《Our Playlist》 features not only Narae but also other teenagers running towards their dreams at various speeds.
Na-rae's best friend, Ina, has been preparing to become a singer long before Na-rae, but at some point, she started feeling like she was eating away at herself every time she sang.
Eventually, I decide to let go of my dream before I start hating music any more.
Ina's story of turning around and running in the opposite direction in her dream shows that it takes as much courage to give up on a dream as it does to dream it.
And this process is not just filled with despair, but also suggests that it can be the starting point for opening a new door and finding another clue.

This book also features Yulim, who records her daily life through vlogging and strives to live a healthy life each day; Soyoung, a literary girl who experiences the wide world through books and diligently attends book talks; and Jeonghyeon, a student with top grades who puts pursuing her dreams on hold and focuses on her studies.
There are various characters who diligently pass the summer of eighteen to their own rhythm.

For teenagers walking toward their dreams, this book will be a great playlist to listen to while walking.
When you want to run wild, play at a fast tempo, and when you want to catch your breath, play at a slow tempo. You can find the pace that suits you by playing stories with various rhythms.
There is no right answer to the direction and speed of walking toward your dreams.
Just like the five people in "Our Playlist," we must embrace the present with all our might and never give up on our dreams.
