[Appendix] What should I prepare for the Camino de Santiago?
Into the book
I decided to walk the French Way, the 800km course from Saint-Jean-de-France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, which is said to be the most popular walking route.
This is the longest and most well-known of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes.
Paulo Coelho's novel "The Pilgrim" and Hape Kerkeling's travelogue "Meet Me on the Road" are also set on this road, and the setting of the Korean entertainment program "Spanish Boarding House" is also this road, the French road.
It takes 33 days just to walk 800km, and including the journey to and from the farm, it takes at least 37 days.
I couldn't find the time to finish it all in one go while working.
I planned to walk in two parts.
The first leg is a 25-day journey from Saint-Jean, France to Leon, and the second leg is a 17-day journey from Leon to the final destination, Santiago de Compostela.
The first pilgrimage (July 23-August 14, 2022, Saint-Jean-Leon, 470km) was planned to be done during summer vacation, and the second pilgrimage was planned to be done at the same time the following year.
After completing the first pilgrimage, the second pilgrimage could not proceed as planned.
Due to my wife, who was my pilgrimage companion, being diagnosed with cancer, my next schedule was uncertain.
Fortunately, my wife overcame her illness and returned home having completed the 'Untangodo 1330 (Yeongwol Cheongnyeongpo, Gangwon-do - Samcheok Tower of Hope, 173.2 km)'.
So I was able to pack my backpack again and set off on the second pilgrimage (23.10. 3-17, Leon - Compostela, 330km).
I was happy every day because I had a friend who encouraged each other by making eye contact, slept in the same albergue, and walked the same path while looking at the same place.
As I walked along the road, I did not try to put down the weight and worries of life on the road.
I didn't even try to figure out what was causing the pain in my life and try to heal it.
I just walked.
I looked forward to the sunrise every morning, enjoyed the fact that I could walk every day, and was happy the whole time I was walking.
That would have been enough.
It was the happiest and most beautiful 33 days of my life, walking every day and writing every day.
