Book Introduction
Travel writer Noh Jung-hoon's
Twenty travel records
“I was floating with longing in my memories
“Capturing the scenery of a travel destination”

Singer Yoon Do-hyun and food critic Park Chan-il strongly recommend!

Noh Joong-hoon, the host of MBC Radio's "Noh Joong-hoon's Taste of Travel," has published his first travel essay, "Inside the Scenery."
He took on the title of 'travel writer' in April 1999 and has been living a life of wandering around.
As the list of travel destinations piled up, the sights and foods he encountered also piled up.
Now, there are people who ask where he has been and eat what he has eaten.
In the previous books, “Grandma, Can You Eat?” and “The Man Who Chooses Restaurants,” the dining tables of travel destinations were depicted in simple and plain sentences, whereas in this book, the aspects of travel destinations are captured with affectionate photos and flowing sentences, focusing solely on the “scenery.”
You can also meet him on the radio, who is quite different from his witty banter, and who looks at travel destinations seriously and sometimes warmly.

Into the book
Monument Valley, in the southeastern corner of Utah, was desolate and majestic.
In the dry plains, sandstorms blew incessantly, and stubborn rocky mountains stood tall, refusing to allow grass or trees to grow.
We took a jeep into an 'alien landscape' lined with red rocks.
--- p.13 From “Landscapes Carved by the Knife of Time”

The ship, which had been speeding along without hesitation, paused for a moment before the waterfall.
My nerves were tense, like the eve of a typhoon.
Finally, the boat jumped into the waterfall.
The powerful stream of water, the first I had ever encountered since I was born, instantly penetrated my entire body.
All I could see and hear was water.
--- p.69 From “The Stream That Makes the World Cry”

Some people spent the day chatting in the outdoor cafes of Piazza Tartini or in the pubs of the alleys, while others drank in the sea breeze at the restaurants on the beach.
Others spent their idle time floating on the smooth Adriatic Sea on white yachts.
They all looked like cats sleeping on a sunny staircase.
--- p.126 From “The Most Splendid April”

Valencia, with its 2,000-year history, is both an inherited and rebuilt city.
If the ruins of the old town and buildings more than a century old encapsulate Valencia's past, the City of Arts and Sciences, built on the banks of the Turia River, speaks volumes about the new Valencia.
--- p.173 From “Innovating through Architecture”

Among the many cafes along Rue Mirabeau, one with an extraordinary story is Les Deux Garcons at number 53.
This café, which opened in 1792, is said to have been frequented by Cézanne and his close friend, Emile Zola.
Knowing this, if you sit in a cafe, you can naturally picture two people having a deep conversation about art and literature.
--- p.212 From "In Search of the Immortal Painter"

The stuffy interior of the Yangon Circular Train was extremely dizzying.
The vehicle was filled with vegetables and fruits that had followed the passengers, making it look like a cargo hold.
Some women even sat down on a chair and prepared vegetables.
No one looked at me strangely or felt uncomfortable.
--- pp.249~250 From “The Expression of Life Encountered in a Buddhist Country”

As I took a sip of the cappuccino I ordered, the old man sitting next to me said this to me with a faint smile.
“This seat I’m sitting in is the sunniest in the neighborhood.” The grandfather’s voice was filled with the serenity of a man who has mastered the world.

Publisher's Review
Deep nature and immortal art,
And the story of a loving life

“In the dry plains, sandstorms blew without warning,
Towering, stubborn rocky mountains stood, refusing to allow the growth of grass or trees.
“We took a jeep into an ‘alien landscape’ of red rocks.”

From the majestic crimson Monument Valley in Utah, USA, to the thunderous roar of Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Argentina, to the blistering spray of whales the size of houses, flapping their wings and tails in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Part 1: Overwhelming Landscapes introduces five travel destinations that will overwhelm travelers.
In contrast, in Part 2, ‘Slow Landscape’, the author’s gaze is captured as he slows down and explores the alleys and entrances of the travel destination.

“Children ran innocently along the narrow road that seemed to be on the verge of breaking,
The laundry on the veranda was drying quickly,
“The unknown artist was absorbed in his work late into the night.”

The cheerfulness of a local beer encountered at an outdoor cafe I happened to stop by while walking through the small town of Vittoriosa, Malta, the peace of a ferry ride on Lake Bled, Slovenia, and the exotic charm of Berat, Albania, the city with 1,000 windows.

'Part 3: Landscape of Art' tells the story of a diverse travel destination, from architecture to painting to wine.
From Valencia, Spain, with its unique architecture that makes you feel like you've crash-landed in a futuristic space, to Provence, France, where the lives of Paul Cézanne and Van Gogh are etched, to Aquitaine, France, a wine mecca filled with the scent of grapes.
The stories of various travel destinations, passed down through time as much as the various arts, also make us realize that they are part of the travel destination's scenery.

“Those who offered prayers sat down on the floor of the temple,
They chatted and shared the food they brought.
It was the expression of a peaceful life, not oppressed or held back by religion.”

And the story that cannot be left out is ‘Part 4: Landscape of People’.
The local daily life encountered in a travel destination may leave a deeper impression than the magnificent nature or exotic buildings or food.
The mysterious daily life felt in a Myanmar temple where people pray with a pure heart and then gather together to share a meal, the hospitality received in a Kosovo home where they say, "Even the enemy will let you stay," and the dull and boring daily life of people met in Greece, remembered as the country of God.
The everyday life encountered in the travel destinations I entered as a foreigner was captured in gentle and affectionate scenes.

The journey continues

“This seat where I sit
“It’s the sunniest spot in the neighborhood.”

An old man I met at Cafe Jacob in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The words he said while reading a book while burying himself in the sofa made me look forward to another trip after the trip.
"I should go back and find the sunniest spot in the town where I live and work." The journey that began with this book will also end with the last page, but the author's story, which looks at the travel destination with a warm gaze, will evoke another journey in our hearts.
