Book Introduction
A bookstore tour after quitting the bookstore
Let's take a look at the stories of the people who protect the space called a bookstore!

According to data from the Korean Booksellers Association, there are approximately 2,200 large and small local bookstores nationwide.
There are approximately 530 local bookstores registered on the local bookstore website (https://www.bookshopmap.com/).
In Seoul alone, there are about 600 bookstores (including used bookstores).
These days, bookstore tours have become a trend, with book lovers avoiding large bookstores and seeking out spaces that suit their tastes. They are also gaining popularity as dating spots for couples.
Local bookstores are still loved by many people, to the point that there was once a boom in opening local bookstores.
We live in an era where analog sensibilities are increasingly disappearing and social media is becoming mainstream.
Even in this age of social networking, there are places that welcome visitors with an analog feel and unique character.
The local bookstore is just such a place.

『Travelogue of Bookstores Across the Country』 is a book that compiles interviews with 11 local bookstores from the series of interviews with local bookstores published by author Seokryu on Brunch from 2017 to 2018 under the title [Cities Loved by Booksellers].
The author worked as a bookseller at a bookstore for two years.
The author, who wanted to get closer to books in order to write, personally realized the importance of bookseller while working in a bookstore.
He said that he felt a greater sense of responsibility for his role as a bookseller, as he began to work with the excitement of decorating the bookshelves, the satisfaction of seeing readers purchase the books he displayed, and the joy of seeing regular customers emerge.
After quitting the bookstore and working as a freelancer, the author visited a bookstore that he had not been able to visit due to time constraints while working, and listened to the stories of the bookstore owner there and recorded them.
Let's vividly encounter the stories of those who run and maintain neighborhood bookstores across the country in "Travelogue of Bookstores Across the Country."

Into the book
The story of the bookstore is not new, as it has already been published in many books.
Among the books currently available in bookstores, there are many that deal with bookstores and bookstore employees, but as a former bookstore employee, I believed that there would be things I could talk about more closely with them.
My resolve to write about bookstore clerks grew stronger with those thoughts.
--- p.6~7

Many people call Gwangju a human rights city, perhaps because of the May 18th incident.
I think it's a very open city, as it's called a human rights city, but Gwangju is still a city with many patriarchal aspects.
Many women took the lead in the May 18th Democratization Movement, but many of those stories are buried.
That's why I have a lot of books about feminism, such as books about Gwangju from a woman's perspective, and because the Me Too movement has sparked a lot of interest in feminism, I want to talk about those things.
There are also books on human rights, and I am doing my own curation focusing on the humanities and social sciences.
--- p.50

I think the most important thing is for readers to have a key role in the bookstore and to cultivate the space.
After all, bookstores are maintained by the footsteps of readers, and local bookstores cannot survive without interacting with local residents.
--- p.130

‘There’s an independent bookstore like this in my neighborhood too?’
So please tell everyone that it's good.
We also think of it as a space where people can come and share comfortably.
I think we didn't start the bookstore with any grand intentions, so customers can come and go comfortably.
Even in the case of meetings held at a bookstore, the meeting proceeds smoothly even if we are away.
In that sense, I think it's not a space that just the two of us created, but a space that the people who gather and the guests who stop by create together.
As I work closely with my guests, they sometimes make recommendations about books they would like to bring.
We are doing curation together with our guests.
You can't easily do that in a regular bookstore.
--- p.149

I hope the bookstore can serve as a platform for local residents to engage in intellectual dialogue.
If space is utilized in this way, wouldn't sales naturally increase?
I think it would be great if, for example, urban travelers could create a space where local youth could take the initiative and utilize it.
Although it is a bookstore, it also engages in cultural and artistic planning, so I hope that through this space, we can all pursue our dreams together.
--- p.184

Guests who have visited often send handwritten letters.
That was impressive.
I think it's memorable that guests who visit this space alone become friends with each other, and when they return, they're not alone, but with others.
--- p.227

Publisher's Review
What does a bookstore mean to you?
Because there are more happy days than sad days, I opened a bookstore with this taste!

『Travelogue of Bookstores Across the Country』 is not simply a book that introduces bookstores.
The book contains interviews with a total of 11 bookstores.
Seoul (Night Bookstore), Incheon (North Pole Bookstore), Sokcho (Perfect Days), Daejeon (City Traveler X Dadarda), Gumi (Samil Bookstore), Gyeongju (Today is a Bookstore), Jinju (Soso), Busan (Indigo Seowon), Gwangju (Boy's Book), Suncheon (Bookstore Simda), Jeju (The Next Spring)... .
Their stories, told in gem-like spaces across the country, from small vintage bookstores to bookstores boasting unique book curations and Bookstay bookstores, vividly portray the space of a bookstore and the daily life of a bookstore manager.

The author also put a lot of effort into selecting bookstores in each city.
Among hundreds of bookstores, we first compiled a list of bookstores nationwide, and in the beginning, we conducted interviews by receiving recommendations from bookstores in a relay format.
Since it was sometimes difficult to conduct interviews at recommended bookstores, from the middle of the book, I mainly conducted interviews at places that I was interested in and really wanted to hear from, and bookstores that I would like to recommend to readers.

While the book does address the issues most neighborhood bookstores face—gentrification, profit margins, and surviving competition from big-box bookstores—it focuses more on questions designed to reveal the unique characteristics of each bookstore and the mindset of its owners.
We also talk about what is possible because it is a local bookstore.

/ There was a time when a bookstore was flooded in the winter.
(…) I couldn’t do any business and was just pumping out water, but a regular customer from the neighborhood saw me on his way home from work and helped me pump out the water.
It was nice to know that there was someone who cherished this space as much as I did.
_33p, Seoul (Night Bookstore)
/ When it was our first year since we opened the bookstore, we went on a trip to Finland.
At that time, the bookstore customers looked after the bookstore for me.
(…) There are also people who asked us to look after them.
At that time, the three of them took turns looking after the bookstore.
(…) But, the bookstore did much better than we did.
_151p, Suncheon (Bookstore Simda)

Isn't this kind of episode, where people connect with each other through books and lead to good relationships, something that's only possible at a local bookstore?
The author says that he spent at least two weeks researching and gathering information to determine interview questions for an interview at a bookstore, and preparing a basic interview questionnaire to ask as many unique questions as possible.
Common questions like, "What is the ideal bookstore for a bookstore owner?", "What are your thoughts as you open the bookstore every day?", and "What are some memorable episodes from your work?", as well as questions posed differently by each bookstore, ensure that the interview is a smooth and enjoyable read without any dull moments for the reader.
Additionally, the author's brief comments at the end of the answers vividly convey his feelings as an interviewer at the time, which also adds to the enjoyment of reading.

No more boring landmark tours!
Until the day when local bookstores become landmarks

“A neighborhood without a bookstore isn’t really a neighborhood.” This is what a character in the novel “The Bookstore on the Island (Lupe)” said.

Today, neighborhood bookstores are struggling to be reborn as love rooms in the city center.
Public institutions and local governments are also developing various projects to revitalize local bookstores.
The 'Neighborhood Bookstore Cultural Love Room' program, which turns neighborhood bookstores into places for local residents to enjoy daily culture and exchange, the 'Late-Night Bookstore' project, which is being carried out to establish them as spaces where people can spend their leisure time comfortably, the 'Seoul-style Bookstore' project selected by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to revitalize local bookstores, and the 'Small Bookstore Support Project with Authors', which allows authors to reside in bookstores and allow readers to enjoy various literary programs, etc.
Although each program is different, they all aim to revitalize local bookstores and bring together local residents and book lovers.

Separately from this, local bookstores also operate various programs on their own to survive in each region.
While conducting the interview, the author was amazed by the bookstore owner's brilliant ideas and thought that the future of local bookstores is not bleak at all, as there are people who love books and bookstores.

This book, which introduces local bookstores, will serve as a guide to help readers easily approach local bookstores to find their own tastes.
I hope that this will be a time when readers can feel like they are traveling to their local bookstore together as they turn each page.

It's like a travelogue or a walking story,
『Travelogue of Bookstores Across the Country』, full of information

After the interview at a bookstore, the final section includes a short essay about a local attraction recommended by the bookstore or a travel destination the author had wanted to visit.
It also provides a brief respite for readers who have read the interview together.
As you read the impressions of famous places in each region, such as Namsan Mountain in Seoul, Geumosan Mountain Road in Gumi, and Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon, you will find yourself feeling at ease in the tranquil atmosphere without even realizing it.
"Neighborhood Bookstore Travelogue" is not simply a collection of interviews, but it effectively conveys to readers the warmth and information that came from time and space, books, and that space.
Some bookstore owners recommend local attractions or good places to take a walk, while others recommend delicious restaurants.
This book, which contains everything you can get from a local bookstore, is like a travelogue or a walking story.
In particular, the appendix, "Treasured Books Found at Neighborhood Bookstores" and "33 Neighborhood Bookstores Across the Country Perfect for Traveling," will inspire many to visit a local bookstore right away.
If you suddenly feel like taking a break or going on a trip, why not grab a copy of this book and head off to a bookstore across the country?

Introducing eleven local bookstores I encountered on my bookstore tour!

[Seoul] Night Bookstore
A bookstore where you can happily hide away at the end of a hard day.
The Storm Store Manager and the Night Store Manager take turns guarding the bookstore.
On an evening when night has gently descended upon the city, a visit to the cavernous Night Bookstore will be a time to discover what bright light lies within you.

[Incheon] Bukbuk Bookstore
The North Pole may be far away, but the books in the North Pole Bookstore are closest to us.
As you look around the space, which is decorated in a way that resembles playing Tetris, you will feel as if you have entered a friend's room.
We also run the art gallery North Pole Hall, where you can see wonderful exhibitions.
It is the perfect space for those who love retro things, as it also sells a lot of retro goods.

[Sokcho] Perfect Days
A great bookstore to visit when you need a break from the tiring and exhausting daily routine.
Perfect Days is a space that provides the perfect rest for those who need a break from the stuffy city life.
It is a combination bookstore and guesthouse, making it the perfect place for those who want to read books and stay overnight.

[Daejeon] City Traveler X Dadarda
A city traveler who creates local content while suggesting various directions in life.
I run a bookstore called 'Dadarda' that suggests a new lifestyle.
A bookstore highly recommended to people who love to travel.
Not only do they have a large selection of travel books, but they also have a late-night bookstore on the last Friday of every month, so you can read books until late at night.

[Gumi] Samilmunko
A place that was born with the goal of being the most beautiful bookstore in Korea.
As the saying goes, the moment you open the door and step inside, you naturally fall in love with the space.
Looking at the beautiful interior and the curated collection of bookshelves arranged in a wide space consisting of the first floor above ground and the first basement level, you can feel time disappearing.

[Gyeongju] Today is a bookstore
Today, I want to go to a bookstore. A place I want to run to while shouting, "Let's go to a bookstore today!"
As we gather together to read books, participate in reading clubs, and build relationships, we come to feel with our whole body that we are living together, not alone.

[Busan] Indigo Seowon
Beyond the slogan of a humanities bookstore for young people, it is a space where people of all ages can learn.
The humanities magazine "Indigoing," planned and created by young people, is also being published continuously.
We also operate Ecotopia, a vegetarian restaurant where you can enjoy a meal while engaging in healthy discussions.

[Jinju] Sososo Bookstore
A good used bookstore to visit when you want to find treasures in old books.
When you enter the bookstore, you are greeted warmly by the friendly and smiling bookstore owner.
As I look at the used books hidden in every corner of the bookshelf, the scent of childhood memories comes back to me.

[Gwangju] Boy's Book
In Chungjang-ro, there is an old single-screen theater called Gwangju Theater.
After watching a movie at Gwangju Theater, walk into the alley next door and you will see the bookshelf of the boy's bookstore, pulling you back to the future, as you were a boy or girl in the past.
As you browse through the books in Boy's Book, you will find yourself becoming curious about the city of Gwangju.

[Suncheon] Simda Bookstore
If you are planning a trip to Suncheon, this bookstore is a must-visit on your travel itinerary.
As you enter Simda, a bookstore resembling Suncheon, you will witness a small seed blooming in your heart.
If you're wondering what to buy as a souvenir from your trip to Suncheon, we recommend the goods and blind books made directly by Simda.

[Jeju] The following spring
If you want to travel to Jeju Island and spend some quality time alone, the following spring is the perfect time.
If you enter at opening time, the bookstore owner will serve you fragrant coffee.
As you drink coffee and chat with the bookkeeper, you will fall under the spell of wanting to come back and say hello again the following spring.
