Chiang Mai Picture Diary: 89 Days of Happiness Without a Hurry

Designer couple Yuli and Taku are gaining incredible popularity by publishing their daily cartoon series 'Nyultoon' on Instagram.
I lived in Chiang Mai for three months, from one winter to the following spring, and wrote about my experiences and feelings in warm-hearted cartoons and honest essays.

Yuli and Taku, who had both quit their jobs and were at a crossroads in their lives, set off on a 89-day visa-free trip to live the life of a 'digital nomad' they had always dreamed of.
What they encountered in Chiang Mai, where they had set out on an 89-day journey filled with excitement and fear, was the leisurely fulfillment of each day and the warmth of the people.
To convey that warmth to readers, we included 65 cartoons with previously unreleased Instagram episodes, 10 essays each written by Yuli and Taku, and vivid photos of Chiang Mai.
Additionally, the author included a Chiang Mai tour map as an appendix to provide a variety of fun experiences.

Into the book
“Want to go to Chiang Mai?”
It was not long after we became freelance designers, or more accurately, unemployed, that we heard Taku's story.
My daily routine of organizing my portfolio, working out, and uploading the sketchbook I started drawing as soon as I quit my job to Instagram.
In a corner of my suddenly free mind, there was always a worry about the future.
--- p.15

Whenever a group of friends would gather together, they would tell stories of how they suddenly burst into tears on the bus ride home late one night.
“I was like that too.” “I’ve been like that too.” Our days were filled with frowns on the morning train and tears on the night bus.
But when I came to Thailand, I suddenly encountered many faces I had never seen before, smiling at me.

--- p.40

It was only after I left Seoul that I was able to have my own space.
The house I stayed in in Chiang Mai was somewhere between a temporary travel inn and my own cozy home away from home.
A home where you can improve your quality of life with a relatively low cost of living, even if it's only for a few months.
A place where you have to prepare breakfast in the morning and return in the evening.
A small space with white walls and a view through large windows that I liked.
Taku and I called that place, where freedom floated like a feather, our home.
The house I got after coming all the way to Chiang Mai might have been Taku's tenth studio apartment, but for me, it was my first home.
Even though it was only a three-month rental, I paid the rent without fail with the money I had saved for several years, money I had saved from my retirement fund, and money I had saved up in my bank account.

--- p.66

There wasn't any grand resolution to become a digital nomad.
It was okay though.
When I arrived in Chiang Mai, found a house, and started working as an outsourcer, it felt like a stroke of luck.
It was truly magical timing.
'I'm in Thailand and working!' I could enjoy that feeling of satisfaction for a week before the magic wore off, that is, before I finished work and became half-retired again.

--- p.96

No matter what, the best thing is to eat delicious food and stay healthy wherever you are.
Feeling a sense of responsibility to eat Thai food in Thailand, and feeling like I was being defeated by something when I sought out familiar tastes, I decided to let go of my imaginary traveler.
In Thailand, even people who can't eat coriander can enjoy a variety of delicious foods.
If you just remember these words.
“My Sai Pakchi.”
--- p.272

I left Korea in the winter wind and spent a long time in the summer of Chiang Mai.
Back in Korea in March, the spring breeze was already blowing, but I was still wandering in the middle of a midsummer story.
I came to miss Chiang Mai again and again, as it was deeply etched in my heart as I looked back on it over and over again.
What kind of trees are growing along the road, what kind of things are being sold in the stores, what kind of people are living with what kind of expressions.
A place where nothing could have been imagined.
I can recall it now as if it were right before my eyes.
This might be the fun you can have after your trip.

Publisher's Review
Yuli & Taku's Hot Topic: 3-Month Stay in Chiang Mai Instatoon
Chiang Mai's daily life captured in warm illustrations and candid essays.

Yuli & Taku, a designer couple in their 7th year of existence, are receiving a sensational response for their series 'Nuttoon' on Instagram.
The story of two freelance designers living in Chiang Mai for three months begins with a single word said carelessly one day.

“Want to go to Chiang Mai?”

Chiang Mai has become a mecca for leisurely travel, known as the mecca of 'digital nomads'.
Chiang Mai, located in northern Thailand, is the second largest city in Thailand and a former capital city steeped in culture and history.
Contrary to the well-known hustle and bustle of Bangkok, it is a peaceful and laid-back city with a pleasant natural environment. Recently, thanks to its low cost of living and excellent internet access, it has become a place where digital nomads from all over the world gather to enjoy both work and travel.
Two unemployed designers, Yuli and Taku, boarded a plane to Chiang Mai without a plan to fulfill their long-held dream of becoming digital nomads.
Even though I was enjoying the free time I suddenly had after quitting my job, I always had worries about the future lingering in a corner of my mind.
Then, I suddenly decided to live in Chiang Mai for 89 days.
The reason for the decision was 'I think I'll regret it later if I don't go now.'

A Midsummer Night's Dream, experienced here and there
Contrary to their romantic expectations, what awaited them was the sweltering Thai weather and the brutality of airport taxi drivers.
Yuli and Taku still had a long way to go.
I had to scramble to find accommodations that fit my budget, struggle with new foods, get used to days without work, and get used to a new routine that unfolded vaguely.
But during their 'short' three-month stay in Chiang Mai, Yuli and Taku found their first 'home' in life, fell in love with the taste of Thai food, and took a step forward in their careers as 'digital nomads'.
And I was able to achieve a balance between work and rest that was difficult to achieve in Korea.
Above all, I am able to achieve the lifestyle I have always wanted by experiencing a leisurely and comfortable daily life and feeling the warmth of the people I meet and share smiles with every day.
These 89 days of warm daily life are entirely captured in the comics and essays drawn and written by Yuli and Taku.

In Chiang Mai, walk slowly!

'Life' is not a short-term trip that passes through, but a leisurely stay that fills a part of my life.
As Yuli and Taku did, I recommend that visitors to Chiang Mai 'take it slow'.
Only then will we be able to better understand the warmth of their daily lives and the smiles of the people we encounter.

This book contains warmly illustrated cartoons, honest essays, and photographs that capture the experiences and feelings of two travelers.
The author's self-drawn Chiang Mai map included in the appendix is witty, and the tips and episodes that will be useful for readers visiting Chiang Mai for the first time are impressive.
Above all, the two authors' witty descriptions of each moment, along with information on finding a home, shopping, and good restaurants, provide a unique fun that cannot be found in other '○-month living' type books.

Through Yuli and Taku's three-month Chiang Mai picture diary, we hope to convey the warmth of everyday life and the 'pompu' that makes you want to go anywhere to readers' hearts.
