VERY PORTLAND
Description
Book Introduction
Portland: A Coexistence of Creative Urban Culture and Abundant Nature
Portlanders say “Very Portland” to describe something that is very Portland-like.
This book talks about something very Portlandian, something that Portlanders cherish and love.
The city of hipsters, the city of Stumptown Coffee, the city of Kinfolk…
A few words that symbolize Portland can now be erased.
Because 『Very Portland』 will only show you the places and keywords that locals, not tourists, love in Portland today.
“Portland doesn't try to impress anyone and so impresses everyone.”
- [Lonely Planet]

Into the book
Living in Portland, I met a lot of travelers.
Some people love Portland so much that they stay for a month and come back six months later, while others get sick of it and leave after three days.
A person who came to live for a year and left after barely three months said this.
“I thought Portland was Korea’s Jeju Island, but it’s Gangwon-do.
“There’s nothing.”
Compared to big cities like New York, LA, or San Francisco, Portland is small in size.
There are no flashy buildings or fashionistas walking the streets.
Although there are many delicious restaurants, breweries, and coffee roasters, they cannot keep up with the numbers of big cities.
Falling in love with a city is like falling in love with a person, so whether you like it or not is entirely a matter of personal taste, but if you love nature, you're more likely to like Portland.

Speaking of Portlanders, first of all, their behavior is strange.
Instead of cutting their hair short, men wear beards, and women dye their hair rainbow colors and wear glasses that look like something their grandmothers would have worn in the 1980s (not that they're trying to be funny, of course).
People of all ages and genders have tattoos on their arms and legs, but most of them are large drawings rather than lettering.
The funny thing is, despite his appearance as if he's chewing gum, his kind nature is revealed when he opens his mouth.
People who greet you as if it's the first time they've met you, even if you see them several times a day, and who approach you first and ask, "Can I help you with something?" even if you're just standing there with an awkward expression on your face on the street.

'Farm to Table' means bringing ingredients produced on local farms directly to the tables of local restaurants without going through middlemen.
Many Portland restaurants are practicing farm-to-table, and a key reason for this is the city's excellent access to farms.
Even if you grow the best ingredients, it would be impossible if the distance is too far to be easily and quickly transported.
Of course, a more important background is the healthy awareness of farm and restaurant owners who value eco-friendly ingredients and support local businesses.

Portland is a city where creative urban culture and abundant nature coexist.
Whether you're visiting a coffee shop, a library, or a market, you'll encounter tall trees, squirrels scurrying between them, and crystal-clear lakes, all blending harmoniously with Portland's hipsters and towering buildings.
As evidenced by the lives of Portlanders who pack their bags and head to the nearby rivers and mountains on weekends, Oregon's vast natural landscape reveals itself even just a short distance from downtown.
When you venture into Oregon's vast wilderness, which reveals a different face every moment depending on the season, weather, and time of day, you don't have to make any specific plans or worry about the forecast calling for rain.
Of course, because it is that day, a possible scenery will unfold.

Publisher's Review
Why Portland
Portland is a city where the city and nature coexist beautifully.
Trees are visible everywhere, and there is a park in every neighborhood.
It also has a surprising number of local brands for a small city.
The streets are filled with beer breweries instead of beer shops, coffee roasters instead of coffee shops, and supermarkets are filled with locally made perfumes, soaps, and organic groceries.
This can be said to be the result of extreme love for local products combined with the urgency of having to make everything yourself.
As the city's slogan, "Keep Portland Weird," suggests, Portlanders live their lives as weirdly as possible.
There are various festivals held throughout the year, such as the Naked Bike Festival and the Quiet Music Festival, which encourages sleeping.
Who wears what clothes and what weird hairstyles
They don't mind going to work and they don't follow other people's styles.
Aren't you curious about the urban landscape that these people, who don't care about trends and prefer to flaunt their own style, are creating? "Very Portland" will be your guide to making Portland a truly wonderful travel destination.
A list of places completed with the discerning eye of a feature reporter.
The author, who worked as a feature reporter for domestic magazines such as [Noblesse], [Nylon], and [Allure] for over 10 years, has been living in Portland for 3 years.
As a freelance journalist based in Portland, I have written articles about Portland for numerous domestic and international magazines and have also published a Portland mini-guidebook in collaboration with the Portland Tourism Board.
I meticulously documented every nook and cranny of Portland, discovered through conversations with neighbors, enjoying daily life with friends, and reporting. Among them, I carefully selected only the places that locals cherish and love, and compiled them into a book.
From restaurants with a distinct Portland flair, to fashion and lifestyle shops unique to Portland, to bookstores and galleries that offer a glimpse into Portland's unique culture, to information on coffee roasters and breweries, this guide offers a wide range of experiences.
In addition, we introduce places where you can experience Oregon's great outdoors, as well as information on parks, hotels, and wineries surrounding Portland.
You can experience the real Portland as seen, heard, and experienced through the eyes of a Portlander, not a tourist.
Portlanders living at their own pace and tempo
The author says:
What makes Portland shine now, more than anything else, is its people.
As evidenced by the fact that it is the home of the globally popular lifestyle magazine Kinfolk, Portland is home to people with different values about living well.
Portland is a city where people who value sharing delicious, healthy food with their neighbors, loving nature, and enjoying life more than their career success.
We also included interviews with Portlanders who live a perfectly ordinary life in this special city: they prefer their local coffee shops over famous brands, aren't interested in "trendy" or "it bags," and like to show off their style in their own way.
