Book Introduction
A wonderful collaboration between Caldecott Honor Award-winning authors

A new book has been published by Jon Klassen, author of "This Is Not My Hat," which won the 2013 Caldecott Medal and the 2014 Kate Greenaway Medal.
This new work was planned and produced by Mac Barnett, who also won the Caldecott Honor in 2013 for Annabelle and the Magical Yarn, and took five years to complete. As a collaboration between Caldecott Medal-winning authors, it has garnered attention from readers and the publishing industry around the world.
The completeness of the work and the trust in the authors were further enhanced, and this work was exported to 14 languages around the world before publication.

Sam and Dave Digging is the story of Sam and Dave, who start digging in the ground to find something 'amazingly cool'.
Mac Barnett and John Klassen say, “The two children in this book love to dig.
Like children in real life.
“Digging the ground is a very simple task, but there is nothing more interesting for children,” he said, explaining the motivation behind the work and creating the unique character of ‘Children Digging the Ground.’

Mac Barnett and John Klassen, who wanted to create a book about children who love to dig, were best friends and partners, constantly inspiring each other's work throughout their career.
John Klassen constantly consulted with Barnett about how to show the underground structures in an interesting way, and Mac Barnett pondered how Klassen's drawings could be closely connected to his own writing.

Barnett's concise, unadorned prose meshes exquisitely with Klaassen's richly encapsulated illustrations, creating a cohesive narrative.
“John and I have been a huge help to each other while working on this book.
As Mac Barnett said, “It was a really special and wonderful collaboration,” the image of Mac Barnett and John Klassen working together to achieve a single result is projected onto Sam and Dave in the work, showing them as a fantastic duo with overflowing individuality.

Publisher's Review
A fantastic contrast of humorous text and illustrations

As John Klassen demonstrated in his previous works, Where's My Hat? and This Is Not My Hat, he hides secrets in his paintings that only the reader can know.
It's the huge gem underground that Sam and Dave haven't discovered.
There are always sparkling jewels around Sam and Dave as they search for 'something truly awesome'.
But only the reader knows that fact.
Sam and Dave digging through the ground, avoiding the jewels one by one, gives readers the thrill of knowing a secret that the other characters don't know.

The dog who follows Sam and Dave on their underground adventure also provides interesting stories and humor.
From beginning to end, the puppy has an indifferent expression and points out with his eyes the whereabouts of the jewel that Sam and Dave cannot find.
As if it were representing the reader's eyes.
How would the story have been different if Sam and Dave had turned their attention to the puppy, even just once? Would they have found that "wonderfully wonderful thing" they so desperately wanted? Jon Klassen's illustrations, filled with questions and imaginative imagination, heighten the tension of the story and draw readers into the work.

Special message

There are times when the daily routine becomes boring.
At times like these, we try to relieve the boredom of everyday life by traveling to new places or taking up new hobbies.
Sam and Dave from "Sam and Dave Digging" also started digging in the ground to find something that would help them escape their boring daily life.
However, the two of them struggle all day in the dark underground and eventually return home without having achieved anything.
Nonetheless, the two say, “It was really, really cool.”

The book doesn't explain whether the "amazingly cool thing" Sam and Dave were looking for was a sparkling jewel, a buried treasure map, or a secretly hidden toy.
So readers can interpret what is 'amazingly cool' in various ways, based on their own standards.
But one thing is clear: within that 'amazingly wonderful thing' lies a person's desires and values for life.
"Something truly awesome" is different for everyone, but the experience and process of acquiring it helps us grow, and those moments of growth are the most precious treasures in the world.

Mac Barnett and John Klassen said they hope children will read this book and find the treasures hidden in their own backyards.
This saying shows that the 'amazingly wonderful thing' that will breathe new life into your life is right next to you in your daily life.
Sam and Dave's experience of the joys of everyday life provides readers with an opportunity to reflect on the small joys of everyday life that they may have forgotten.
