Book Introduction
A magical pumpkin gifted by a mysterious grandmother!

This picture book, "The Magic Pumpkin," tells the magical story of two poor families who share an old cabin.
Although both families were living very difficult lives, their approach to poverty was different.
The Aniya Anisi family, who lived on one side of the hut, lived each day, giving up on their dreams because they were poor, while the Graeya Grasi family, who lived on the other side of the hut, nurtured hopes and dreamed of a bright future, no matter how poor they were.

One stormy day, an old woman was walking with difficulty in front of her cabin.
They opened the front door and invited the grandmother to come inside to get out of the rain, then offered her a cup of warm tea.
The grandmother, moved by the kind-hearted people who lived in poverty, thanked them for their kindness and gave them each a magic pumpkin.
And he said that if you want the pumpkin to work its magic, you have to use it wisely.
The two families sat face to face, brainstorming what to do with the magical pumpkin their grandmother had given them.

Publisher's Review
What magic did the pumpkin cast on the two families?

In this picture book, 'pumpkin' signifies a good opportunity that has finally come.
Opportunities can either bring about magical results or disappear like bubbles, depending on how you use them.
The wise grandmother knew this and advised both families to use this opportunity wisely.
What on earth did the two families do?

Yes, the Gracie family split the pumpkin open, took out the seeds, sowed them in the field, and tended them diligently.
And as the pumpkins grew in abundance, they made and sold pumpkin jam, which was famous for its delicious taste.
No, the Ani family polished the pumpkin and placed it in the best spot in the house.
And I waited for the pumpkin to work its magic, taking care of it like a baby.

What magic did the pumpkin do for these two families?
How about children reading this book imagining the consequences and discussing them with their friends?

A familiar story like a traditional fairy tale!

This picture book, “The Magic Pumpkin,” is very familiar in its content and structure, like a traditional Korean fairy tale that begins with “Once upon a time in a certain village.”
What stands out in particular is how the story is told so that children do not judge people hastily.

The Aniya Aniya family, who seemed to be negative and bad all the time, are actually good people who willingly help their grandmother in trouble, and they also reflect on their own foolishness of just sitting and waiting for the pumpkin's magic to work.

Pilar Serrano, a children's book author and elementary school teacher, uses this picture book to convey the power and importance of positivity in an easy-to-understand way for children.
It shows that if we don't lose our smile and consideration in any difficult situation and overcome difficulties together with our family and neighbors, hope and happiness will eventually come.

Karina Kok's pastel-toned illustrations blend well with the simple story, creating a sense of familiarity.
It is also a delight to watch the vibrant colors change as the story unfolds, from hope and anticipation to despair and sadness, and finally, happiness with one's neighbors.
