Into the book
There must have been a feeling among some perceptive Manchurians that conquest by force could not last forever.
The worry and anxiety about the resistance that the hard-working and intelligent Koreans, who make up the vast majority, might one day raise, were probably the external motivations for the Sunu family to convert to Christianity.
They tried to solve their problem by becoming naked human beings before God through faith.
Emperor Yongzheng must have felt similar anguish.
However, Emperor Yongzheng found a solution in a completely different way.

This was a more realistic solution from the emperor's perspective.
I will implement excellent politics that no previous Chinese emperor has ever achieved, and build a just society that Chinese history has never experienced before, so that all people can live in peace and comfort.
This is the mission that Heaven has specially given to the Qing Dynasty monarch.
By accomplishing this mission, the Qing and Manchu people will receive the praise of not only the Chinese people but also of Heaven, and their lineage will continue for generations to come.
This was Emperor Yongzheng's firm belief, and it would not be an exaggeration to say that it was almost a religious belief.
And the emperor put this belief into practice with the sincerity and strong patience characteristic of the Manchurian people of the time.

The person who cannot help but feel compassion here is Nian Guifei, Nian Gengyao's sister.
Before her brother's trial, the illness of Queen Nyeon was announced.
If a concubine died of illness, an order was even issued to hold a funeral with the same rites as an imperial concubine, one level higher.
It is obvious what the announced soldier means without asking.
This tragedy must have been a great tragedy not only for Consort Nian, but also for Emperor Yongzheng.
The dictator was even required to sacrifice his family life.

When dictatorship is thoroughly enforced, the monarch cannot have a family life or even relatives.
The Qing Dynasty, which arose in Manchuria, entered China and gradually became more Sinicized in terms of its political structure, but Manchurian characteristics still remained strongly in Qing society.
One of these customs was respecting family formalities, and among the Manchurian aristocracy, there were proud families who prided themselves on being more legitimate than the current imperial family.
The Sunu clan was exactly them.

Who is the rightful monarch? He is the monarch who received the mandate of heaven.
This is also what the Chinese adults taught.
If a monarch has received the mandate of heaven, there is no need to consider whether he is Chinese or a foreigner... If the Chinese look down on the Mongols as foreigners, the Mongols will also despise the Chinese and call them swastikas. Speaking to each other like that is a corrupt way of thinking of later generations.
Loyalty is an immutable lesson taught by Chinese sages, and it is a morality that transcends nationality.

Publisher's Review
This is a biography of the Yongzheng Emperor, the "world's most conscientious dictator" who boasted, "I will not cause the world to suffer for my own sake unless the world is governed or governed." It is also an interesting and moving history book that explores the politics, economy, and social customs of early modern China.

The Yongzheng Emperor was born in 1678 as the fourth son of the Kangxi Emperor and succeeded the Kangxi Emperor to the throne at the age of 45.
He ruled China for 13 years until his death in 1735.
Although the reigns of his father Kangxi and his son Qianlong seem pitifully short (Kangxi's 61 years and Qianlong's 61 years), the Yongzheng Emperor accomplished more than any other emperor and focused on strengthening the Qing Dynasty, putting it on a solid foundation.

Before the publication of this book, the Kangxi era, which laid the foundation for the Qing Dynasty, and the Qianlong era, which heralded the golden age of the Qing Dynasty, were highly regarded, but the Yongzheng era was underestimated as a bridge or interlude connecting the two eras.
Even regarding Emperor Yongzheng, it was generally evaluated that he was not a tyrant, but rather a ruthless strategist who would use any means necessary to achieve his goals.

However, the author of this book, Ichisada Miyazaki, rejects this conventional evaluation.
He said that because the Yongzheng era lasted 13 years, the Qing Dynasty reached its greatest prosperity during the Qianlong era, and was able to last for more than a century and a half after the death of the Yongzheng Emperor.
Above all, the author highly evaluates Emperor Yongzheng's political power.
Although Emperor Yongzheng did not achieve spectacular military achievements like his father Emperor Kangxi, he is said to have been the most perfect dictator in Chinese history, or even in world history, in terms of domestic governance.

With his superhuman will and energy, the Yongzheng Emperor led the vast Chinese continent and the Chinese people, who outnumbered the Manchus by over 100 times, in the direction he intended.
It was to fulfill the mission given by the Mandate of Heaven, that is, as the emperor, to guarantee the livelihood of all the people of the world.
Emperor Yongzheng believed that if he failed to fulfill this mission, the Mandate of Heaven would go elsewhere.
So, no one was tolerated who interfered with the fulfillment of the mandate.
Even brothers.
