Parents who feel sorry for not playing well, teachers who are at a loss as to how to play well,
A truly friendly guide to picture book art play for activists who want to play artistically with picture books!
We present a creative picture book play method that expresses emotions through body language.

《Picture Book Art Play》 is a guide to picture book art play that vividly captures the picture book classes of art instructor Lee Ji-hyun, who has 17 years of experience.
It introduces various class contents within the new category of ‘art play’ on how to make picture book play fun and effective.
It's great for playing with children at home, and can also be used in classes for multiple children at kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools, libraries, and institutions.
This book is largely divided into two parts. Part 1 provides a guide to picture book art play, and Part 2 introduces various picture book play across eight chapters, including 'How to play while moving, how to play while coloring, how to play while staying in one scene, how to play while making food from picture books, how to play with knowledge from picture books, how to play while expressing myself, how to play with numbers and Korean, and how to play while making super-easy picture books.'
In particular, as a teacher who has been teaching drama for a long time, it is noteworthy that he suggests a creative picture book play method that allows students to express emotions using body language.

As author Jeon Eun-ju of Flower Girl said in her recommendation, 'The real strength of this book goes beyond teaching children how to play with picture books, and it awakens the energy and mindset to learn how to bring out the fun in play and have fun playing with children.'
Additionally, the book offers a variety of play methods that can be modified in one picture book, so the number of play methods in this book does not stop at around 150.
As you read a book, new ideas keep coming to you, one after another.

Even if you are not a picture book activist, this is a magical guide to picture book art play that will make you want to take out the picture books sleeping in your bookshelf, read them, and play with them.
Highly recommended for adults interested in books and play.

Into the book
Goldsmith.
It is an abbreviation for ‘picture book art play activist.’
This is a new word I created while writing this book.
This is my personal nickname for teachers who want to play with students at school, activists who work with picture books in various places such as kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools, libraries, community centers, and welfare centers, and parents who want to play with their children through picture books.
The word 'geumsul' in the abbreviation 'geumsulga' also means 'a tassel made by twisting gold thread in several layers'.
I think it would be good to interpret this to mean that our goldsmiths are at the important part where picture books and art play are harmoniously intertwined.

Picture books and play are inseparable.
When children read picture books, they naturally start to play, and picture books are also the ones that guide them through various play methods.
But, 'How should we, as adults, read picture books and play with children?' is a slightly different story.
Even if adult picture book play starts out as play, it can easily turn into an educational activity or one that contains a moral message.
I thought it would be a fun and light game, but when I started playing, it turned out to be heavy and static, and children lost interest.
The reason why play goes differently than intended is because we try to ‘play with’ rather than ‘play together’.
This is because we approach play not as ‘simple play’ but as an ‘activity for a result’ with a certain intention.

We must not forget.
In order for children to freely imagine, express themselves, and play with picture books, they must immerse themselves in the play they create.

I hope that more artisans will try, transform, and spread the picture book art play that I do, so that our children can experience it 'naturally and naturally.'
I hope that picture books will be spread out in libraries, centers, welfare centers, kindergartens, elementary schools, and even middle and high schools where our children attend, and that they will be able to enjoy art play without right answers.

---From the preface

On my first day of class with my students as a theater arts instructor at the start of a new semester, I often say this:

“Today, I’m going to read picture books and play.
It's study time, but I'm going to have fun with you guys.
Have you ever studied while having fun, studying without even realizing it? You just had fun playing, and then you started studying on your own.
I tried not to study, but I found myself studying without realizing it.
“Come on, let’s play something unique!”

And play.
I read picture books and play with my children.
Although it is clearly a post-reading activity, it has a strong play nature, so children enjoy participating.
Children are encouraged to read books and express their own feelings, but this does not feel burdensome.

The basis of all play is ‘freedom, enjoyment, interest, and fun.’
The 'concentration, imagination, creativity, and expressiveness' that adults desire come as bonuses to play.
So please let me have fun.
So that the child is happy.
---From "Let's have fun with picture books"

There are some things that artisans should keep in mind when doing picture book art play.
The point is that you shouldn't be too conscious of the theme or direction of the message contained in the picture book, or the author's intention.
For example, a picture book about "poop stories" might be designed to help with toilet training, but it can also be a great book for expressing emotions, playing with your body, or creating rules.
If you get caught up in the theme of the story called 'potty training', the purpose of the story, or the author's intention and focus on learning precautions for using the toilet or how to clean up after yourself, it becomes an educational time to learn how to use the toilet rather than a play.

If you find a picture book you'd like to read and play with your children, look at it from different angles.
Think about whether you want to share the entire story, stop at a scene from the picture book, play with a single line from the main character, focus on the background of the pictures in the picture book, share the entire story and create a new story, just look at the cover, make up text (such as commentary or dialogue) that doesn't exist, or make up your own story.
If you open a picture book from these different angles and new perspectives, new play will be born.
---From "Let's have fun with picture books"

Publisher's Review
As my child entered upper elementary school, he naturally became distant from picture books.
Of course, I know that picture books are books that children can read from 0 to 100 years old, but at some point, the flow of reading shifted to fairy tales with lots of text, so I couldn't bring myself to take out picture books and give them to my child.

But while looking at “Picture Book Art Play,” I found myself taking out picture books from the bookshelf with excitement, thinking, “I should do this with this book, I should play with this book with my children’s friends.”
Even though I am not a picture book activist.

This book shows how many different types of play can be created with picture books, regardless of age, and how those plays can be reborn as other types of play. The ideas for play are endless.
Because we're introducing a picture book art play method that can be literally transformed into thousands of variations.
Above all, as expected from a teacher who has been teaching drama for a long time, this picture book is full of creative activities that allow students to express emotions using body language.

Even I, who had become somewhat weary of playing with my child since he entered the upper grades of elementary school, am seeing his desire to play revived. This book will surely cast a magical spell on the reader.
I'm going to keep all the unique and interesting play methods introduced in this book and try them out one by one when my child's gaze changes during puberty or when he or she is struggling with the stress of studying.
After reading "Kim Cheol-su's Bread," I feel like I'm punching a sack of sacks, and after reading "Space Hell," I feel like the distance between me and my child is narrowing a little.
