Exchange students who switched places
Description
Book Introduction
The Mittermaier family, living in Vienna, Austria, decide to welcome Tom, a dapper model student from London, as an exchange student during the summer vacation.
But the one who actually appears in front of the family is Jasper, who is far from Tom in both appearance and personality.
Tom's half-brother, a troublemaker in the world, came to replace him after he was injured in a sudden accident.
From the first day he arrived, he insisted on having Ewald's room to himself, and when someone touched a pile of rocks he had brought, he growled like an animal.
Even if you haven't bathed for several days, your body smells, and you're a master at leaving your room messy, but you have no intention of cleaning it up.
This leads to a climax in the conflict between Ewald's parents and Jasper, as the family learns from Ewald's older sister, Bille, that Jasper's parents divorced when he was young, and that this trauma has led to his erratic and seemingly rude behavior.

Bill and Ewald become Jasper's best friends, and Ewald's parents decide to become Jasper's real family and go on a summer vacation together.
But it turns out Jasper had a secret.
When he learned that his Aunt Mary, who had loved him more than his real mother when he was young, was coming to Rome in the summer, he deliberately volunteered to be an exchange student and came to Vienna in the hopes of seeing her.
Upon learning of this, the Ewald family changes their original plan and heads to Italy, where Rome is located.
However, Aunt Mary, who was barely able to connect with Jasper by phone thanks to the efforts of Ewald's parents, refuses to meet him. Jasper, heartbroken by this, says that he has no reason to live anymore and that it would be better to jump in front of a moving train and disappears.
What will become of Jasper, a 14-year-old boy who has fallen into the greatest despair of his life? Will the Metermare family, who have set out to find him, be able to save him?

Publisher's Review
? Parents and children grow together through conflict!

“I want to change the other person by infiltrating their brains.
“The conflict between adolescent children and their parents is on the rise!”

Jasper, Ewald, and Wille, who are at the center of the story, are teenagers aged 13 to 16, either just entering or going through puberty.
They have just passed through childhood, when they were unconditionally dependent on their parents, but that does not mean they are adults who can live completely independently from their parents.
So, on the one hand, they reject parental intervention and interference and shout for freedom, but on the other hand, they want their parents' sincere attention and care.
What about parents then?
They have their own worries.
Although parents want to recognize their children as independent individuals, in reality they end up acting as dictators who monitor, discipline, and order their children around.
Even if you say with your mouth that happiness can never be determined by grades, once you turn around, you cannot escape from worrying about grades, whether you sleep or wake up, risking your life.
Given these circumstances, conflict and clashes between parents and children are inevitable.
Children complain that they don't trust and respect us, and parents blame their children for being too young to know the world.
This is not a story that applies only to the Ewald family, a middle-class Viennese family.
It is certain that countless young people and their parents in South Korea are also going through similar struggles.
So, young Korean readers who read this book may ask themselves this question:
“Why are Ewald’s parents so similar to our parents?”

But conflict isn't all bad.
As this book reveals, conflict can actually serve as a catalyst for the growth of the parties involved.
Before Jasper came along, the Ewalds were the most bored family in Vienna.
A mother who believes that a good wife and mother must dedicate themselves to cleaning the house and improving their children's grades, a father who believes that it is okay to give his children a proper slap in the face to guide them on the right path, a daughter who covers her ears with headphones when something doesn't suit her but pleases her parents with excellent report cards, and a son who listens well and studies well as a model student.
It seemed that they had no particular problem to worry about and solve together.
But one day, things start to change when Jasper shows up.
As his parents try to reform the troublemaker Jasper, Bill's rebellion rapidly grows, and Ewald also watches the conflict between Jasper and his parents, and he breaks away from his role as an obedient and good son.
The harsh words that Bille spits at his mother in the middle of the text are even more painful because they reflect the truth.

"Mom, you only like people you like, right? Kind, smart, and cool people! Mom doesn't know how to accept and love others for who they are.
Only when the other person meets the mother's expectations can she accept and love him.
So, what I feel for Jasper right now is not love, but just pity.
"Perhaps it's the same for us, too? Even if we weren't good at studying and were just doing drugs and stealing, would our mothers really love us? No, she definitely wouldn't!"

? When you learn to love yourself as you are, the door to relationships opens!

“Jasper, who was called the devil’s son, and the Ewald family, who were the most bored in the world,
“A new relationship begins the moment they seep into each other!”

Ewald's parents are confused and angry at their child's changes, and sometimes even resort to threatening them, relying on their authority as parents.
But as she comes to understand the wounds Jasper carries deep in his heart, she begins to show a very different attitude towards Jasper and her children.
Perhaps, as Bille continued to insist on learning to "love as is," he began to truly express his true feelings, ones he had long held back. As parents grow, so do their children.
As the couple's sincerity is conveyed, Jasper finally learns to bathe himself and keep his room clean.
Billie, the prickly daughter who always pointed out her parents' faults in a blunt, sharp, and harsh tone, is now becoming a much more mature girl who knows how to express gratitude to her father and mother.
Even Ewald tells all the children of the world that they must acknowledge the limitations of the older generation in order to love their parents as they are.

“What parents in the world would be so enamored with their children?
Since our parents are from a different generation than us, there are inevitably some differences, and aren't they also human beings with both strengths and weaknesses, just like us?
So I wanted to tell my sister not to see only the bad side of her parents, and that no matter how hard they made things for us, there is no one in the world who cares for us and loves us as much as they do.”

Growth does not end at some point, but must continue as long as life lasts.
So, the changes of Jasper, Ewald, Ville, and Metermae do not end here.
They will likely spend the rest of their lives constantly trying to heal themselves, grow, and develop more mature relationships with others.
This book shows that anyone can put such efforts into practice right now, and that it doesn't require any special courage or skills.
We are all different Jaspers, Ewalds, Billegos, and their parents.
