Into the book
“Son, is your frame any good?”
“It’s sturdy.
But Grandpa, I’m not your father… … .”
The grandfather interrupted Heo Sam-gwan and continued asking questions.
“Son, do you often go to sell blood?”
Heo Sam-gwan shook his head and answered.
"no.
“I’ve never sold blood.”
"You've never even sold blood, so how can you talk about having a strong backbone? You're trying to deceive me."
“Grandpa, what are you talking about? I can’t understand a word you’re saying.
“Are you perhaps senile?”
--- p.20

Heo Sam-gwan held the broken mirror in his hand and looked at his own eyes first, then Il-rak's eyes, and those eyes were his own.
He looked at his own nose again and saw Illak's nose, and it was indeed that nose.
So he thought.
'Everyone says Ilrak doesn't look like me, but in my opinion, there are some similarities.'
Ilrak asked his father, who was blankly looking at him.
“Father, when you look at me after looking at yourself… what on earth are you looking at?”
“I’m going to see if you resemble me or not.”
--- p.59

“Hey, prepare seven teacups and boil a kettle of water.
“Are there still any tea leaves left in the container? We have seven guests… … .”
Heo Ok-ran came out, wondering why there were so many guests, but when she saw Bang and his party, her face turned pale and she said to Heo Sam-gwan.
“They are the ones who came to evict the house.”
"Isn't the person who came to vacate the house a guest? Go quickly and prepare some water first."
Mr. Bang and his party parked a cart in front of the door and spoke to Heo Sam-gwan.
“I have no choice either.
We have been friends for over 20 years without seeing each other in a bad light...
I have no choice either.
My son is waiting for money at the hospital.
If you don't have money, you won't be given medicine...
Have I ever come to your house and cause trouble since my son's head was smashed by Illak? Of course not.
“It’s already been two weeks since I’ve been waiting at the hospital for you to give me money… … .”
Heo Ok-ran sat in the middle of the doorway with her arms spread wide, blocking anyone who tried to enter.
“Please don’t do this.
Please don't take my things.
“This house is like my life.”
--- p.106

“Give me the kids.”
“That can’t be happening.
“I boiled this for you.”
“So what if someone drinks it?
It's the same thing, it turns into shit.
Make the kids poop harder.
“Let the kids drink.”
Heo Sam-gwan watched his three sons holding bowls and gulping down sugary corn porridge.
“After you all drink, bow down to me.
“I’ll give it to you as a birthday present.”
After saying this, I felt a little embarrassed and added something as if beating around the bush.
“When will this suffering end?
“It’s so sad that my children have lost their sweet tooth and don’t even know if it’s sugar or not when they eat something sweet.”
--- p.166

“I’m hungry and sleepy.
I want to eat something and sleep.
“I came back because I thought you would cherish me more than I would care for you, even though you don’t think of me as your own child.”
Saying this, Illak stood up, leaning against the wall, and began walking west again.
“Don’t you stand there! This little brat is really trying to go away, but…….”
Ilrak stopped walking, slumped his shoulders, lowered his head, and cried so loudly that his whole body shook.
Heo Sam-gwan, who saw the scene, crouched down in front of Il-rak and spoke in a blunt voice.
“Okay, get on.”
Heo Sam-gwan carried Il-rak on his back and walked toward the east.
I passed through the alley and entered the main road, which ran right next to the river that ran through the castle.
Even while walking, Heo Sam-gwan continued to curse at Il-rak without stopping.
“This little bastard, this dog-like bastard, this rice bowl-like bastard…….
“You drove me completely crazy today… … .”
--- p.197

“You are so shameless.
Look at that thick face of yours, and I'll show you one of my methods.
You can't sell blood here, so you'll have to look elsewhere.
Other hospitals won't know you sold your blood recently, so they'll probably buy it for you.
Do you understand?
This blood-head saw Heo Sam-gwan nodding repeatedly and added a sharp word.
“Even if you die selling your blood, it has nothing to do with me.”
--- p.282

Publisher's Review
What exactly is 'life'?

World-renowned master Wei Hua confronts a huge question
An answer written with humanism and humor

Since his debut, Wihwa has been confronting huge questions head-on for the past 40 years.
As a writer, his ambition was to create a story set against the backdrop of the turbulent 100-year history of 20th-century China in the 1900s, reflecting on where we came from and envisioning where we are headed.
『Yuanqing』, which deals with the early 20th century, 『Brothers』, which deals with the late 20th century, and 『Life』 and 『The Story of Selling Blood』, which are set in the mid-20th century, can be grouped together as Wei Hua's 'Chinese 20th Century Four-part Work'.
The reason why 『Life』 and 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』, which belong to the middle period, are selected as Wi Hwa's representative works is likely not unrelated to the fact that Wi Hwa himself went through that period.
『Life』 and 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』 are answers that Wi Hwa, who stands on the turbulent path of history, directly ponders on what life really is.

"Life" is not only Wei Hua's representative work, but is also considered a masterpiece of modern Chinese literature.
In 1949, half a century later, Chinese history changed dramatically when Mao Zedong officially declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
"Life" is a work set in the 1950s, just after that.
Through the tragic life of the landowner 'Fugui', who fell from grace in an instant, it captures the cruel social upheaval of the revolutionary period and the noble footsteps of a human being who did not give up on life even in such an unbearably desperate situation.
It is a story that plants an undying hope in the hearts of those who are deeply frustrated.
You can see the essence of 'humanism', a keyword representing the conflict.
"Life" was included in Chinese language textbooks and has sold over 20 million copies, excluding countless pirated copies.

Although 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』 is set in a similar time period, the atmosphere is quite different.
In 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』, what is emphasized as much as humanism is Wei Hua's unique 'humor'.
The story warmly portrays the enduring love between family members through the poor life of 'Heo Sam-gwan', who supports his family even by selling his blood, which is like his life.
Just like in “Life,” even when social upheaval hits, Heo Sam-gwan’s family is plagued by “vulgar” problems.
The husband is having an affair, the three sons are constantly having accidents, and the wife never stops complaining.
If Fugui's life was about 'enduring', Heo Sam-gwan's life seems to be about 'just coping'.
It is a story that gives us the strength to live without losing our smile even in a tragic life.
『The Story of Selling Blood』 received rave reviews worldwide, and became the best-selling Chinese novel in Korea.

If 『Life』 answers the question of why we should live life, 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』 seems to answer the question of how we should live life.
The fact that 『Life』 and 『The Story of Selling Blood』, despite being set in modern China that may seem unfamiliar, have been loved for a long time around the world is undoubtedly because the grand thematic consciousness of this kind has a power that transcends region and time.

In times of poverty, in times of abundance
To live a beautiful life above all else

In the preface to this revised edition, Wihwa said:
“(In both works) the times depicted were times of material poverty, but readers felt the beauty of life within them, and that beautiful feeling continued into the modern era of material abundance.
It is a deep comfort to me as a writer that a novel allows readers to experience the beauty of both past and present life at the same time.
(…) Because beauty in life is sometimes unrelated to poverty and abundance, and can never be measured solely by poverty and wealth.” If beauty in life is not absent even in times of poverty, and not abundant even in times of abundance, then where can we find beauty? We can certainly find clues in 『Life』 and 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』.
The power to live a better life.
It is contained in 『Life』 and 『The Story of Heo Sam-gwan Selling Blood』.
