Book Introduction
“They are not human.”
"no.
I am human.
“Because it came from a machine that creates humans.”
Dune-style questions about humans and desire

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut in 2024, Korean SF master Duna's new work, "Bari," has been published as part of the Wisdom House short story series, Wipick.
Humans, fearing extinction, launched a spaceship containing a "machine that can create humans" and a "robot that will raise humans born from the machine until they reach adulthood" in order to establish a new human civilization in another star system.
When the deceleration device malfunctions, the robot 'Bari' in the spaceship is pushed to a distant star system. He is welcomed by the robot 'Sky Cloud' and his companions who arrived first and were building a city for humans, and takes his first steps on a new planet far away.
They repair the broken machine with Bari and fill the tank with culture fluid, and after 249 days, what comes out of the machine is a 'four-legged trumpet'.
For Bari, who wants to nurture humans, and Haneul-geureum, who wants to serve humans and build civilization, the human yet non-human Trumpets cause unpredictable events.

Author's Note
Interview with author Duna

Into the book
"welcome.
“Are you human?” the robot said in a small mezzo-soprano voice.
Bari shook his head.
"no.
I am also a robot.
“My name is Bari.”
--- pp.7~8

“But despite that, humans didn’t do that.
And they sent us into space, fearing we would be wiped out by war.
How can you be sure that the same thing won't happen again here?"
“I can’t.
Still, we must follow our desires.”
--- p.20

“They are not human,” said the sky cloud.
White, trumpet-shaped animals with four arms and long tails were writhing in incubators inside the machine.
The blankets inside were dirty with black excrement and everything smelled bad.
The trumpet looked up at the bar and the clouds in the sky with its two small black eyes above its mouth.

--- pp.20~21

The robots expected that the humans they would raise would create that change.
But it was the robots themselves who made the change.

--- p.25

“There is no such thing as a normal trumpet,” the skycloud consoled.
“Because it is not a being that was created naturally.
The machine would have done its best with the information given.
But the result is just filling in the blanks without any purpose.
Trumpets are neither evolved nor designed.
I was just born by accident.
So it's only right to give them a better life.
It is a cure.”
--- pp.30~31

Five trumpeters died in two years.
Beethoven, Schubert, Fauré, Britten, Hindemith.
Both Beethoven and Schubert had heart problems, and Schubert died during surgery.
Britton drowned while playing on the beach.
Both Faure and Hindemith fell to their deaths.
Not all of them were that smart.
Faure and Hindemith were so stupid that it's a wonder they survived until then.
But Sky Cloud was not convinced by these two deaths.
Why did both of them climb up to the top of the Maritime Museum and fall?
And that too with a difference of only 19 days.
Could this just be a coincidence? If not, then perhaps Britton's drowning wasn't just an accident.

--- pp.33~34

The last two chapters of this story begin 218 days after Schoenberg's death.
That morning, robots cleaning the southern beach discovered twelve small islands, each about eight meters in diameter, floating in the sea.
--- p.44

Dune-style questions about humans and desire

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut in 2024, the master of Korean SF and film critic Duna's new work, "Bari," has been published as part of the Wisdom House short story series, Wipick.

Humans, fearing extinction due to war, launched a spaceship containing a "machine that can create humans" and a "robot that will raise humans born from the machine until they reach adulthood" in order to establish a new human civilization in another star system.
When the deceleration device malfunctions, the robot 'Bari' in the spaceship is pushed to a star system farther than its original destination. He is welcomed by the robot 'Sky Cloud' and his companions who arrived first and were building a city for the humans who will come later, and takes his first steps on a new planet far away.
They repair the broken machine with Bari and fill the tank with culture fluid, and after 249 days, what comes out of the machine is a 'four-legged trumpet'.

"Bari" is a work that deals with the events brought about by trumpets, which are human but not human, to Bari, who wants to raise humans, and Haneulgeureum, who wants to serve humans and build civilization.
Sky Cloud, who is tasked with helping humans build a civilization, feels a sense of duty to serve the all too 'human' Bari, while the planet's native creatures do not recognize Bari as a being they can communicate with, even though he speaks their language.
In this way, in the novel, author Doona asks what makes humans human and whether our desires are truly unique, and through pain and violence, he makes us look again at human civilization here today from the distant universe 10,384 light-years away.

A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'

Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.

Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Ki-tae, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, Lim Sol-ah, and Hwang Jeong-eun.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.
